Chapter 11: My Brother's Final Confession

Daniel arrived at the Blue House twenty minutes later.

He didn't knock.

He opened the door and stood in the hallway, breathing heavily.

“Marcus.””

I turned.

“You knew I was coming here?””

He looked at the wooden box on the desk.

“Evelyn told me.””

I glanced at her.

She didn't deny it.

Daniel stepped into the room.

“Have you opened the second drive?””

“No.””

“Good.””

I picked up the hospital document.

“Then explain this.””

Daniel looked at the signature.

His face changed.

“Where did you get that?””

“Evelyn found it in the archived records.””

He sat down slowly.

I remained standing.

“Who signed my name?””

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“I did.””

For a moment, I couldn't understand what he had said.

Then I stepped toward him.

“You what?””

“I signed it.””

“You forged my signature on a medical document concerning my wife?””

Daniel's eyes filled.

“I was told it was what Rachel wanted.””

“By whom?””

He looked toward Evelyn.

She was watching him carefully.

“Vanessa,” he said.

I grabbed the back of a chair.

“Explain.””

Daniel began speaking, his voice barely above a whisper.

“The night of the accident, Vanessa called me. She said Rachel had been taken to the hospital and that you were still on the road.””

“Why didn't she call me?””

“She said she had tried. She told me your phone wasn't answering.””

“That isn't true.””

“I know that now.””

I remembered my phone.

I had been driving through heavy rain, and I had missed several calls.

But I had called Vanessa back as soon as I saw her number.

She had told me to go directly to the hospital.

Daniel continued.

“When I arrived, Vanessa said the doctors needed an authorization because Rachel had previously expressed certain wishes about medical intervention.””

“What wishes?””

“She said Rachel had signed something years earlier.””

I shook my head.

“Rachel never told me that.””

Daniel looked miserable.

“I asked to see the document. Vanessa showed me a copy.””

“And you believed her?””

“She said Rachel had been very clear about not wanting certain procedures under specific circumstances.””

I stepped closer.

“Daniel, my wife was thirty-seven years old. She had a six-year-old daughter. She wasn't dying of an illness. She had been in a car accident.””

“I know.””

“Then why did you sign?””

Daniel lowered his head.

“Because Vanessa said you had already agreed.””

My voice became dangerously quiet.

“You signed my name because my wife told you I agreed?””

Daniel began crying.

“I was afraid, Marcus.””

“Of what?””

“She said Rachel had evidence that could put me in prison. She promised that if I helped her, she would destroy it.””

I stared at him.

“So you chose yourself.””

He nodded.

I turned away.

For six years, I had thanked this man for helping me survive the worst night of my life.

I had called him when Nia had nightmares.

I had invited him to birthdays.

I had trusted him with the only child I had left.

And he had helped someone interfere with Rachel's treatment.

“Did you know Rachel might survive?”” I asked.

Daniel shook his head.

“I didn't know what the doctors were dealing with.””

“Did anyone tell you the authorization was necessary?””

“No.””

“Then why did you do it?””

He covered his face.

“Vanessa said the document was only temporary. She said the doctors had already made their decision.””

I walked toward the door.

“I can't look at you.””

“Marcus, please.””

“Get out.””

Daniel stood.

“There's something else.””

I turned.

He pulled a folded paper from his jacket.

“Rachel gave me this before she died.””

I stared at it.

“Why didn't you give it to me earlier?””

“Because I was afraid of what it contained.””

I took the paper.

It was a handwritten statement.

Daniel, if anything happens to me, tell Marcus the truth about the Blue House. Tell him who introduced Vanessa to our family. And tell him that the money was never the real reason she came.

I looked up.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel's eyes filled again.

“Vanessa knew you before you met her.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She had seen you at a business event years earlier. She knew you were Rachel's husband.””

I stared at him.

“Why would that matter?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Because she wasn't looking for a relationship with you. She was looking for a way into Rachel's financial affairs.””

My stomach tightened.

“Did you introduce us?””

He nodded.

“You remember that charity dinner? The one at the Grand Hotel?””

I remembered.

Daniel had invited me.

Vanessa had been there as a guest of one of the event organizers.

He had introduced us.

I had thought it was coincidence.

“You arranged it?””

Daniel looked down.

“Vanessa asked me to.””

The room seemed to shrink around me.

“How long had you known her?””

“About a year.””

“And you knew she was interested in Rachel's money?””

“Not at first.””

“Then when?””

Daniel swallowed.

“After the first investment deal.””

I closed my eyes.

This was worse than I had imagined.

My brother hadn't simply betrayed me during one terrible night.

He had helped create the circumstances that brought Vanessa into my life.

I looked at the second USB drive.

“What's on this?””

Daniel shook his head.

“I don't know. Rachel told me it contained the original recording of the conversation about the hospital.””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“We should have it examined before playing it.””

I nodded.

The specialist had already been contacted.

We waited while he prepared the equipment.

When the recording finally began, Rachel's voice came through clearly.

“Daniel, you need to understand something. Vanessa isn't just trying to get money.””

Daniel's voice answered.

“Then what does she want?””

“She wants access to Marcus. She wants to become the person he trusts most.””

A pause.

Then Rachel continued.

“She wants to control the story of our family.””

Daniel sounded confused.

“What does that even mean?””

Rachel answered quietly.

“She knows Marcus would never willingly give her Nia's inheritance. So she's trying to make him believe Nia is the problem.””

I felt cold.

The recording continued.

Rachel said:

“If Nia becomes difficult enough, if Marcus starts believing she needs help somewhere else, Vanessa can separate them without looking like the villain.””

Daniel whispered:

“Why would she do that?””

Rachel's answer was immediate.

“Because she knows that once Nia is out of the house, she can influence everything that happens to her money.””

The recording ended.

I stared at the screen.

Evelyn removed her glasses.

“Rachel understood the plan.””

I nodded.

Then I noticed something.

The recording had stopped at exactly the moment Daniel asked why Vanessa wanted to control the family.

There was a second audio file.

Its label read:

Hospital — 8:47 p.m.

The specialist opened it.

At first, we heard hospital machinery.

Then a woman's voice.

Vanessa.

“Daniel, have you signed it?””

“Yes.””

“And you used Marcus's name?””

“Yes.””

“Good. Then nobody needs to know.””

A second voice entered.

A man's voice.

“That's enough, Vanessa.””

I froze.

I knew that voice.

I had heard it during business meetings, family dinners, and every holiday gathering.

It belonged to Gregory Mills.

The attorney.

The man Vanessa had contacted about Nia's guardianship.

He spoke again.

“You promised this would be handled quietly.””

Vanessa replied:

“It will be. Marcus trusts me.””

Gregory sighed.

“And what about the girl?””

Vanessa's answer made my blood run cold.

“She's the last thing standing between us and the money.””

The recording ended.

Daniel was crying openly now.

Evelyn looked at me.

“Marcus, we need to take this to the authorities immediately.””

I nodded.

Then my phone rang.

It was Olivia.

I answered.

“Olivia?””

Her voice was panicked.

“Marcus, you need to come home.””

“What happened?””

“Vanessa came back with a police officer. She's saying you threatened her.””

I stood.

“What?””

“And she's trying to take Ava.””

I grabbed my keys.

May you like

Then Olivia said the words that made my heart stop.

“Marcus, she also told them Nia is missing.””
