Chapter 8: The Daughter Who Was Never Supposed to Exist
The name on the screen stared back at me.
*EMMA.*
For several seconds, I couldn’t move.
The room around me disappeared.
The old workshop.
The dusty shelves.
The broken window letting in the morning light.
None of it mattered.
There was only that name.
My daughter’s name.
The little girl who had spent her life drawing pictures of our family.
The little girl who had fed a child hidden behind her wall.
The little girl who had trusted everyone around her.
My daughter.
And somehow, my father had known something about her.
“What is this?””
My voice sounded distant.
Rachel stepped closer.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
I turned toward her.
“Not this time.””
She stopped.
“No more secrets.””
Her face tightened.
“I know.””
I looked at the screen.
“Why did my father have a file about Emma?””
Nobody answered.
That was the answer.
I felt anger rise.
“Why?””
Claire looked away.
Rachel closed her eyes.
Then she whispered:
“Because Emma was the reason Charles came back.””
I opened the file.
A video loaded.
The screen flickered.
My father appeared.
Older than the picture I remembered.
Tired.
Worried.
But alive.
Seeing him breathe nearly broke me.
I had spent years grieving this man.
And he had been somewhere in the world, leaving messages for me.
“Daniel,” my father said on the recording.
“If you are watching this, then the truth has reached you.””
He paused.
“I’m sorry.””
Those two words hurt more than anything else.
Because they sounded like him.
The father I remembered.
The father who always apologized when he was wrong.
“I know you will have questions.””
He looked down.
“You will be angry.””
A faint sadness crossed his face.
“You should be.””
I sat down.
The recording continued.
“But there is one thing you need to understand.””
He leaned closer.
“Charles was never interested in Lily alone.””
The room became silent.
“He was interested in the connection between you and Rachel.””
My hands tightened.
“He believed your family lines created something unique.””
My father shook his head.
“He was wrong. Not because the science was wrong.””
He looked directly into the camera.
“Because he forgot the most important part.””
A pause.
“People are not experiments.””
I swallowed.
The same words from his letter.
The same belief.
Then he said:
“Emma was born outside of his calculations.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Rachel looked at the screen.
My father continued.
“Charles expected certain outcomes. He expected Lily. He expected Daniel and Rachel’s child.””
The words hit me.
“But Emma was different.””
I stared.
“Why?””
My father looked almost afraid.
“Because Emma proved something Charles never believed.””
The video paused.
Then continued.
“Human connection cannot be predicted.””
I stopped the recording.
My heart was racing.
“What does that mean?””
Rachel answered quietly.
“It means Emma wasn’t part of Charles’s plan.””
I looked at her.
“Explain.””
Rachel sat down.
“When Charles studied families, he believed everything could be controlled.””
She looked toward the screen.
“He believed if he understood enough about genetics, memories, and behavior, he could predict who someone would become.””
“And Emma?””
Rachel looked at me.
“Emma was born from a different family line.””
I frowned.
“What family line?””
Rachel hesitated.
Then I understood.
“Claire.””
Claire looked down.
“Yes.””
I stared at her.
“What does Emma have to do with your family?””
Claire was silent.
Rachel answered.
“Because Claire’s family was connected to Charles too.””
The room went cold.
I turned toward Claire.
“You knew?””
She nodded.
“My family worked with him.””
My chest tightened.
“Your family?””
“My grandfather.””
She swallowed.
“He was one of the people who helped Charles build his research.””
I stared at her.
“So our marriage…”
“No.””
Claire’s answer was immediate.
She looked at me with tears in her eyes.
“Our marriage was real.””
I wanted to believe her.
I really did.
But every truth I had discovered came wrapped in another lie.
We watched the rest of the video.
My father continued.
“Daniel, if Charles finds Emma, he will try to prove his theory.””
He looked exhausted.
“He will try to show that he can predict a child’s future.””
My father shook his head.
“But he cannot.””
The video changed.
A document appeared.
A birth record.
Emma’s name.
My name.
Claire’s name.
Then another document.
A genetic report.
I didn’t understand most of it.
But one line caught my attention.
*Unexpected variation detected.*
“What is that?””
Claire looked nervous.
“I don’t know.””
Rachel looked at her.
“You do.””
Claire closed her eyes.
“I only know what my grandfather told me.””
“What?””
She whispered:
“That Emma wasn’t supposed to exist.””
The words made me angry.
“She’s my daughter.””
“I know.””
“She isn’t an experiment.””
“I know.””
“She isn’t a mistake.””
Claire looked at me.
“I know.””
That evening, we returned home.
But home didn’t feel like home anymore.
Every room had a secret.
Every wall had a hidden space.
Every person had a story they never told me.
Emma ran toward me when she saw me.
“Daddy!””
I caught her.
She hugged me tightly.
For a moment, everything disappeared.
No Charles.
No secrets.
No lies.
Just my daughter.
“Did you find Lily’s secret?””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She smiled.
“The secret Grandpa left.””
My blood froze.
“Emma.””
She tilted her head.
“What?””
“How do you know about Grandpa?””
She looked confused.
“He talks to me.””
The world stopped.
“What?””
She pointed toward the hallway.
“Not anymore.””
I slowly put her down.
“Who talks to you?””
She shrugged.
“Grandpa.””
Claire went pale.
“Emma.””
The little girl looked at her mother.
“What?””
“When did Grandpa talk to you?””
Emma thought.
“Before.””
“Before what?””
“Before Lily came.””
My heart started pounding.
“Where did you see him?””
Emma pointed upstairs.
“In my room.””
I walked upstairs slowly.
Rachel followed.
Claire followed.
Nobody spoke.
Emma’s bedroom looked normal.
The same pink curtains.
The same toys.
The same bed.
But now I saw everything differently.
I knelt beside her closet.
The place where Lily had been hidden.
The place where everything started.
“Emma.””
She looked at me.
“Yes, Daddy?””
“What did Grandpa say?””
She thought carefully.
Then she answered:
“He said you would forget.””
I froze.
“What else?””
“He said Mommy and Aunt Rachel would try to help you.””
My eyes moved to Claire and Rachel.
“And?””
Emma hugged her rabbit.
“He said when you remembered everything…”
She paused.
“Someone would come back.””
A chill moved through me.
“Who?””
Emma looked toward the window.
Then whispered:
“Your brother.””
Nobody moved.
I stared at my daughter.
“My what?””
Emma looked confused.
“Your brother.””
I laughed once.
A nervous, broken sound.
“I don’t have a brother.””
Rachel’s face changed.
Claire looked terrified.
That reaction told me everything.
I turned slowly.
“Why do you both look like you know what she means?””
Nobody answered.
“Rachel.””
She looked down.
“Daniel…”
“Do I have a brother?””
Silence.
Then Claire whispered:
“Yes.””
My entire body went cold.
“No.””
“I’m sorry.””
“No.””
I stepped back.
“My parents had one child.””
Rachel looked at me.
“They told you that.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“What was his name?””
Rachel’s eyes filled with fear.
“Michael.””
The name meant nothing.
And somehow, it felt familiar.
Like a song I had forgotten.
Like a face hidden behind a locked door.
I looked at Emma.
“Why did Grandpa tell you about him?””
She lowered her voice.
“Because he said Uncle Michael was coming.””
My phone rang.
Everyone jumped.
Unknown number.
I answered.
No one spoke at first.
Then a man’s voice came through.
A voice I had never heard.
But somehow…
I recognized.
“Daniel.””
My grip tightened.
“Who is this?””
A pause.
Then:
“You don’t remember me.””
I couldn’t speak.
The man continued.
“But I remember you.””
My heart raced.
“Who are you?””
A quiet laugh.
Then:
“I’m the brother your parents erased.””
The call ended.
And on the screen appeared a photo message.
A picture of a man standing outside my house.
A man who looked almost exactly like me.
May you like
Underneath the photo was one sentence.
*I’m here to finish what Dad started.*
