Chapter 10: The Truth Behind the Red Door

“That isn't Renee.””

Eli's words cut through the hallway.

The woman in the hospital coat stopped smiling.

For one terrible second, nobody moved.

Then Ava whispered, “Eli?””

The boy stepped backward.

“Don't come near her.””

The woman tilted her head.

“Isaiah…”

Eli flinched.

“Don't call me that.””

Daniel moved toward his son.

“Eli, look at me.””

The boy did.

Daniel saw his own eyes staring back at him.

Eight years of questions collapsed into one moment.

“I'm your father.””

Eli's lower lip trembled.

“I know.””

Daniel took another step.

“I've been looking for you.””

“You didn't know where I was.””

“I didn't know you were alive.””

“I know.””

“I swear, Eli—”

“I know!””

The boy's voice cracked.

Daniel stopped.

Eli wiped his face.

“Mom said you didn't know.””

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

“Your mother was right.””

The woman in the hospital coat suddenly turned toward the emergency exit.

Marcus lunged.

She shoved him hard enough to send him into the wall.

Leah grabbed Ava.

“Stay behind me!””

The woman ran.

Daniel chased her.

She disappeared around the corner.

Daniel followed into a stairwell.

“Stop!””

Footsteps thundered below.

He ran down two flights.

The woman burst through a side door into the rain.

Daniel followed.

But Marcus caught up and grabbed his shoulder.

“Daniel!””

“Let me go!””

“She wants you outside.””

Daniel looked through the rain.

The woman stood beside a black sedan.

She turned.

For the first time, the calm mask disappeared.

Daniel saw the face beneath it.

Fear.

Not guilt.

Fear.

Then the sedan sped away.

Daniel turned on Marcus.

“Who was she?””

Marcus was breathing hard.

“Her name is Dr. Simone Reed.””

Eli had followed them into the stairwell.

“No.””

Marcus looked at him.

“You know her?””

Eli nodded.

“She ran the facility.””

Daniel's voice tightened.

“What facility?””

Eli swallowed.

“The one where they kept us.””

Ava stepped closer.

“Us?””

Eli looked at her.

“Me and other kids.””

Leah felt sick.

“How many?””

Eli looked down.

“I don't know.””

Daniel stared at Marcus.

“You knew?””

“I knew there was a facility.””

“You told me my mother was responsible.””

“I was wrong.””

“You lied.””

“I was trying to find proof.””

Eli suddenly shouted.

“Stop blaming him!””

Everyone went silent.

Eli looked at Daniel.

“Marcus saved me.””

Daniel stared.

“But the letter…”

“I wrote that.””

Daniel froze.

“You wrote it?””

Eli nodded.

“I didn't know who I could trust.””

“Why did you say not to trust Marcus?””

“Because Dr. Reed was listening.””

Daniel understood.

“The note was bait.””

“Yes.””

Eli looked at Ava.

“She told me you were coming.””

“Dr. Reed?””

Eli nodded.

“She wanted you to bring Ava.””

Daniel's face hardened.

“Why?””

Eli hesitated.

“She said Ava had something.””

Leah remembered the old photograph.

“The photograph?””

Eli shook his head.

“Not the photograph.””

“What, then?””

Eli reached beneath his shirt and pulled out a tiny metal key.

“This.””

Daniel stared at it.

“What does it open?””

Eli looked at Ava.

“She knows.””

Ava frowned.

“I don't.””

Eli walked to her.

“You do.””

He held out the key.

Ava took it.

The moment her fingers closed around it, she gasped.

“My mom…”

“What?””

“She told me to keep this.””

Daniel crouched.

“Where?””

Ava touched the pocket of her hoodie.

“She said never give it to anyone.””

Daniel looked at Eli.

“What does it open?””

Eli pointed toward the school.

“The old records room.””

They returned inside.

At the end of the basement corridor was a steel door.

Ava inserted the key.

The lock clicked.

Inside were rows of filing cabinets.

Boxes.

Medical charts.

Photographs.

And a single wall covered with names.

Daniel stepped forward.

His breath caught.

Hundreds of children.

Names.

Dates.

Payments.

Destinations.

Leah covered her mouth.

“This is a trafficking list.””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

Daniel found Ava's name.

Then Eli's.

But beneath both names was another entry.

*Monica Carter — Principal Contact.*

Daniel stared.

“Monica really did this.””

Eli shook his head.

“No.””

Daniel turned.

“How can you say that?””

“Because Dr. Reed wanted you to believe it.””

Eli pointed at the wall.

“Look closer.””

Daniel did.

The handwriting beside Monica's name was different.

Someone had forged it.

Eli reached for another file.

Inside was a photograph of Monica.

Alive.

Standing beside Dr. Reed.

But Monica wasn't smiling.

She was crying.

On the back of the photograph was a handwritten sentence.

*I am trying to get them out.*

Daniel's knees weakened.

“She was investigating them.””

Marcus nodded.

“She found out what they were doing.””

Leah turned another page.

A hospital report.

Twins.

Two births.

One discharge.

Then another document.

A death certificate.

The baby's name:

*Eli Carter.*

But it had been signed before Eli was even discharged.

Daniel stared.

“They killed him on paper.””

Eli nodded.

“So they could sell him.””

“And Ava?””

“Renee got her out.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Then who died three weeks ago?””

Eli looked at Ava.

“Her aunt.””

Ava's face crumpled.

“But Mom…”

“She was protecting you,” Eli said softly.

Ava began crying.

Daniel pulled her into his arms.

For the first time, she didn't resist.

He held her tightly.

“I've got you,” he whispered.

“I've got you.””

Behind them, Marcus found another file.

His expression changed.

“Daniel.””

Daniel looked up.

Marcus handed him the document.

It contained one final name.

*Dr. Simone Reed.*

Under it was a photograph.

Reed was younger.

Standing beside Monica.

And beside them was a teenage Marcus.

Daniel stared.

“You knew her before all this.””

Marcus nodded.

“I was investigating her.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because she threatened you.””

Daniel's anger softened.

Marcus looked at Eli.

“She threatened everyone.””

The room fell silent.

Then sirens sounded outside.

Leah looked toward the corridor.

“I called the police.””

Daniel nodded.

For the first time, he wasn't afraid of what would happen next.

Ava held his hand.

Eli stood on his other side.

Daniel looked at both children.

Two lives stolen from him.

Two lives he finally had back.

Then Eli pulled one last folded photograph from his pocket.

“There's something else.””

Daniel opened it.

It showed Monica, Renee, Marcus, and Dr. Reed standing outside the hospital eight years earlier.

But in the background was someone Daniel had never noticed before.

His own father.

Alive.

Standing beside a black car.

Daniel's face went blank.

“My father died before I met Monica.””

Marcus stared at the photograph.

“I thought so too.””

Eli pointed to the back.

Written beneath the date were seven words:

*He came back for the children that night.*

Daniel looked at his children.

Then toward the flashing red-and-blue lights outside.

The mystery that had begun with a little girl's drawings was finally answered.

But the photograph had revealed something nobody had expected.

Daniel's father hadn't disappeared.

He had been watching.

May you like

And eight years after everyone believed he was dead, someone had just sent Daniel a text from his father's old phone:

*You found them. Now find me.*
