Chapter 11: The Doctor's Confession

Steven Hale sat in an interview room at the police station shortly after two in the morning.

His expensive suit was rumpled, his tie loose, and his expression had hardened into the indignation of a man accustomed to being believed.

Daniel watched through the observation window while Sergeant Miller and another investigator questioned him.

Vanessa was being interviewed separately.

Neither had been formally charged at that point, and the investigators were careful to distinguish what they had witnessed from what they still needed to prove.

Hale denied intending to start a fire.

He claimed the bottle contained a cleaning solution used to preserve old documents and that the lighter had been part of a personal collection.

When asked why he had poured the liquid around the grandfather clock at midnight, he said he had been trying to remove an adhesive residue.

The explanation sounded absurd, but Miller didn't argue.

He simply placed a photograph of the scene on the table.

“Dr. Hale, this bottle was found open beside a wooden clock. The room contained papers connected to a disputed inheritance, and you were holding a lighter when officers entered.””

Hale folded his hands.

“I understand how it looks.””

“Then help us understand what actually happened.””

“I was retrieving documents that belonged to me.””

“Which documents?””

“Private medical records.””

“Why were they hidden inside a family heirloom?””

Hale hesitated.

“Because Elizabeth Carter wanted them kept confidential.””

“Elizabeth Carter is dead.””

Hale's expression changed.

“Yes,” he said quietly.

“She is.””

Miller slid the hospital authorization across the table.

“Did you verify this document?””

“Yes.””

“Did you witness Elizabeth sign it?””

Hale looked at the page.

“I don't remember the exact circumstances.””

“Did you witness Michael Carter sign the witness statement?””

Another pause.

“No.””

“Then why did you certify that the authorization had been properly executed?””

Hale shifted in his chair.

“I was told the necessary signatures had been obtained.””

“By whom?””

He said nothing.

Miller waited.

Finally, Hale rubbed his forehead.

“Vanessa Reed brought the document to my office.””

Daniel felt his jaw tighten.

“What did she tell you?”” Miller asked.

“She said Elizabeth had authorized Vanessa to manage certain affairs because her condition was deteriorating.””

“Did you independently verify that authorization?””

Hale looked down.

“No.””

“Why not?””

“Because I believed Vanessa was acting in Elizabeth's interests.””

Miller's voice remained calm.

“And the payment of forty thousand dollars to Northbridge Medical Consulting?””

Hale looked up sharply.

“That's a private business matter.””

“Northbridge listed you and Vanessa Reed as directors. The payment occurred during Elizabeth's final hospitalization. The transaction was flagged in her financial ledger as unauthorized.””

Hale's face lost color.

“Who gave you that ledger?””

“That's not the question.””

Hale leaned back.

“I did not steal money from Elizabeth.””

“Then explain the transfer.””

He stared at the table for a long time.

Finally, he said, “The payment was for consulting work.””

“What work?””

Hale's lips tightened.

“I can't discuss patient matters without proper authorization.””

Miller closed the folder.

“Dr. Hale, this isn't a routine medical inquiry. We have evidence suggesting that a financial transfer may have been connected to disputed medical documents.

We also have a threat involving a possible fire. Your cooperation will matter.””

Hale looked toward the observation window.

Daniel stepped back into the shadows.

He didn't want the doctor to know he was listening.

After several minutes, Hale finally spoke.

“Vanessa wanted the trust amended before Elizabeth died. She said Elizabeth had agreed to it verbally but was too ill to sign the final paperwork.””

“Did you help her obtain the amendment?””

“I arranged for a lawyer to prepare a document.””

“Did you know the signature was forged?””

Hale swallowed.

“I suspected it wasn't genuine.””

“Why did you approve it?””

“Vanessa told me the original document had been signed earlier and that the copy was simply being reconstructed because the hospital had misplaced the paperwork.””

Miller stared at him.

“You expect us to believe you certified a medical authorization based on a story from someone who stood to benefit from it?””

Hale's shoulders sagged.

“No.””

The admission was quiet.

But it was the first honest thing he had said.

Daniel entered the corridor as Miller emerged from the interview room.

“What did he say?””

“He admitted that Vanessa brought him the authorization and that he failed to verify it properly. He also acknowledged arranging the preparation of a trust amendment.””

“Did he admit to forging the signature?””

“Not yet. But his account contradicts several records, and we're investigating the discrepancies.””

Daniel looked through the observation window.

Hale sat with his head bowed.

“Why would he risk his career for Vanessa?””

“We're examining their financial relationship. We need to establish whether he received money, whether the payment was legitimate, and whether he knowingly helped falsify records.””

Daniel rubbed his face.

“Elizabeth wrote that the original trust was with the person who signed her death certificate.””

Miller nodded.

“We found that note inside the clock. Hale signed the medical certification of death, but that doesn't automatically mean he possesses the trust. We'll investigate what Elizabeth intended by that statement.””

“Could he have hidden it?””

“Possibly. But we won't assume that without evidence.””

Daniel appreciated the distinction, though he desperately wanted a clear answer.

A uniformed officer approached with a sealed evidence bag.

“Sergeant, we found this inside the metal case from the clock.””

Inside was a small photograph and a handwritten note.

Daniel stepped closer.

The photograph showed Elizabeth sitting in her hospital bed, holding a folder.

Beside her stood Vanessa.

On the back, Elizabeth had written:

She knows where the original is. But she doesn't know who else has a copy.

Daniel stared at the photograph.

“What does that mean?””

Miller examined the note.

“It could mean Elizabeth made a second copy of the trust. It could mean Vanessa knew where the original was stored. We'll need to establish the context.””

Daniel looked toward the interview room.

“Then we need to ask Vanessa.””

Miller shook his head.

“She's being interviewed separately. We can't force her to answer questions without regard to her rights.””

Daniel exhaled sharply.

“Everyone knows something. Everyone has a piece of the story. And every time we get close to the truth, someone hides another document.””

“That's why we keep following the evidence.””

Daniel walked to the end of the corridor and called Rebecca.

She answered immediately.

“Daniel? Is Lily okay?””

“She is. Michael is with her.””

“What's happening?””

“Hale was at the old house with Vanessa. The police intervened before anything was damaged. They're investigating the medical authorization and the financial transfers.””

Rebecca was silent for a moment.

“Did you find the trust?””

“Not yet.””

“Elizabeth must have had a reason for leaving that note.””

“I know.””

Rebecca lowered her voice.

“Daniel, there's something I haven't told you.””

He closed his eyes.

“Please tell me this isn't another secret.””

“It isn't something I knew for certain. It's something Elizabeth said to me.””

“What?””

“About six days before she died, she called me from the hospital. She asked whether I still had the key to Mother's old chapel.””

Daniel frowned.

“The chapel? The little stone building behind Willow Lane?””

“Yes. It was part of the property before the trust was created. Elizabeth said she wanted to leave something there for Lily.””

Daniel looked at the photograph in the evidence bag.

“Why didn't you tell me earlier?””

“Because I thought she meant a personal keepsake. I didn't know about the trust or the money.””

“Do you still have the key?””

Rebecca hesitated.

“I gave it to Vanessa.””

Daniel went cold.

“When?””

“After Elizabeth died. Vanessa said she was organizing the property inventory and needed access to the building.””

“Did you see her return it?””

“No.””

Daniel turned toward Miller.

“There's another location. A chapel behind the old house.””

Miller listened as Daniel explained.

“We'll arrange a lawful search if the evidence supports it,” the sergeant said.

“Don't go there yourself.””

“I won't.””

The phone buzzed in Daniel's hand.

A message from Michael.

*Lily remembers something else. She says Mom hid a blue ribbon in the chapel.*

Daniel stared at the screen.

He called his brother.

“Where did she hear about the ribbon?””

“Elizabeth told her it was part of a game. If Lily ever needed to find something important, she should look for the blue ribbon near the place where the clocks could be heard.””

“The chapel is behind the old house.””

“That's what I thought.””

Daniel looked at Miller.

“We need to check the chapel.””

The sergeant nodded and began making arrangements.

Before Daniel could put his phone away, another message arrived.

This one came from an unknown number.

*You found the doctor. Now find the woman who signed the original trust.*

Beneath the words was a photograph of an elderly woman standing outside a courthouse.

Daniel recognized her immediately.

His mother had been dead for more than a decade.

Yet the woman in the photograph was Margaret Carter.

And the date printed beneath the image was from three months earlier.
