Chapter 8: The Woman Who Finally Told the Truth

Detective Reed returned to the booth with Officer Brooks beside him.
Vanessa immediately locked her phone and slipped it into her handbag.
Cole saw the movement.
So did the detective.
“Ms. Bell,” Reed said, “I need you to show me the message you just received.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“It was nothing.””
“Then it shouldn't be a problem.””
She looked toward Warren.
He stared back with an expression that warned her to remain silent.
Vanessa's hands began to tremble.
“I don't want to do this here.””
Detective Reed pulled out a chair.
“Then we'll arrange a private interview at the station. But if the message relates to this investigation, I need to preserve it.””
Vanessa slowly removed her phone.
She unlocked it and handed it to him.
Reed read the message without changing his expression. He photographed the screen using the department's evidence procedures, then returned the device.
“Do you recognize the number?””
“No.””
“Has anyone contacted you from it before?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Yes.””
“How many times?””
“I don't know. Several.””
“What did the previous messages say?””
She stared at the wooden table.
“They told me to make sure Maya didn't talk about what she saw.””
Cole felt his stomach tighten.
“Who sent them?””
“I don't know.””
Warren pushed his chair backward.
“This is becoming ridiculous. Detective, she is making unsupported accusations because she's frightened.””
Vanessa flinched.
Detective Reed looked at him.
“Mr. Price, you'll have your opportunity to provide a statement. Right now, Ms. Bell is answering my questions.””
Warren sat down again, his face rigid.
Reed turned back to Vanessa.
“Why were you following Maya?””
Vanessa rubbed her palms against her jeans.
“Because Warren said she had something that belonged to Renee.””
“The key and recorder?””
“I didn't know about the recorder.””
“But you knew about the key?””
Vanessa nodded.
“He told me Maya might have it.””
Cole leaned forward.
“Why would you help him?””
Vanessa's eyes filled.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of Warren?””
She shook her head.
“Of the person Warren worked for.””
The detective's expression sharpened.
“Who is that?””
Vanessa looked toward the windows.
For several seconds, she seemed unable to speak.
Then she turned back.
“His name is Malcolm Voss.””
Warren stood so quickly that his chair toppled behind him.
“Vanessa, don't.””
Officer Daniels immediately rose.
“Sit down!””
Warren remained standing, his fists clenched at his sides.
“You don't know what you're doing,” he told Vanessa.
She stared at him.
“Neither did Renee.””
The words came out stronger than she expected.
Warren looked as if she'd struck him.
Vanessa took a trembling breath.
“Malcolm Voss owns several commercial properties around the county. He has connections with developers, local officials, and people who handle estate transactions. Renee inherited a building from her father, and Voss wanted it.””
Detective Reed opened his folder.
“What building?””
“An old commercial property near the highway. It was worth much more than anyone realized because of a planned redevelopment project.””
Cole glanced at Darius.
The pieces were beginning to connect.
“Renee refused to sell?”” Reed asked.
“Yes. She said Voss was trying to force her out before the new valuation became public.””
“How did Warren become involved?””
“He handled legal documents for Voss's development company. When Renee refused to sign the sale agreement, Warren told me there were other ways to resolve the situation.””
Vanessa stopped.
Her eyes moved toward Maya.
The little girl had put down her toast and was listening intently.
Vanessa lowered her voice.
“I delivered a packet of papers to Renee. Warren said they were routine documents related to the property. Renee read them and realized someone was trying to transfer ownership without her consent.””
“Did you know that was the purpose of the documents?”” Reed asked.
“Not at first.””
“And afterward?””
Vanessa's silence answered before she did.
“Yes.””
Cole's jaw tightened.
“You knew they were trying to steal her property, and you kept helping them?””
Vanessa looked at him, tears spilling down her cheeks.
“I thought I could fix it before anything happened. I thought if I cooperated, they'd leave me alone.””
“Did they?””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“They told me I owed them. I had signed documents I didn't understand. They said they'd make sure I lost everything if I went to the police.””
Detective Reed made a note.
“Did you see Warren at Renee's house on the night she died?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The diner fell silent.
“What time?”” Reed asked.
“A little before midnight.””
“Why were you there?””
“Warren called me. He said Renee was having another argument about the property and wanted me to collect some paperwork.””
“What happened when you arrived?””
Vanessa pressed a hand over her mouth.
“I heard shouting before I entered.””
“Whose voices?””
“Renee's and Warren's.””
“Did you see Renee?””
Vanessa nodded slowly.
“She was standing in the bedroom doorway. Warren had papers in his hand. She told him she had made copies of everything and that if he touched her property again, she'd take the evidence to the authorities.””
Maya began to cry quietly.
Cole reached for a napkin and placed it beside her.
Vanessa watched the little girl.
Then she forced herself to continue.
“Renee told Warren he couldn't intimidate her anymore. He grabbed her arm. She pulled away, and he shoved her.””
Detective Reed leaned forward.
“What happened next?””
Vanessa's breath came in uneven bursts.
“Renee stumbled backward. She hit the edge of a wooden dresser and fell.””
Maya covered her mouth.
Cole's hand tightened against the table.
“Was she conscious?”” Reed asked.
“For a moment. She was breathing, but she couldn't get up.””
“Did anyone call an ambulance?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Warren told me to get a towel. He said Renee would be fine.””
“And did you?””
“I did what he told me.””
Vanessa looked down at her hands.
“By the time I came back, Renee wasn't moving.””
Nobody spoke.
Even Warren appeared stunned by the sudden weight of her confession.
Detective Reed's voice remained steady.
“Did you call emergency services?””
“No.””
“Why not?””
Vanessa began sobbing.
“Warren said that if we called, everyone would know about the property documents. He said Renee's death would destroy everything, including me. He told me he would handle it.””
Cole stared at her.
“You left her there?””
Vanessa nodded, unable to meet his eyes.
“Yes.””
“And Maya?””
Vanessa looked toward the child.
“I didn't know she had seen us.””
Maya's voice came out small and broken.
“I was in the hallway.””
Vanessa covered her face.
“I know.””
“No, you don't!”” Maya shouted.
She scrambled out of the booth and stood beside Cole, shaking.
“Mommy was calling for me! She said my name, and you wouldn't let me go to her!””
Vanessa lowered her hands.
“I was scared.””
Maya's tears streamed down her cheeks.
“So was Mommy!””
The words struck the diner like a physical blow.
Vanessa began crying harder.
“I know. I'm sorry.””
Maya shook her head.
“You left her.””
Vanessa couldn't answer.
Detective Reed asked Officer Brooks to document the statement and arrange formal interviews. He made clear that Vanessa's account would need to be corroborated by physical evidence, medical findings, and the recording.
Warren, meanwhile, had become eerily quiet.
His earlier anger had disappeared.
He sat with both hands on the table, staring at the wood grain.
Detective Reed approached him.
“Mr. Price, do you wish to respond to the allegations?””
Warren looked up.
“My attorney will respond.””
“That's your right.””
The detective stepped back.
Vanessa wiped her face and looked toward Cole.
“There is one more thing you should know.””
Cole waited.
“Renee didn't just make copies of the property documents. She discovered that the signatures on the transfer agreements matched documents used in several other transactions.””
Reed immediately turned back toward her.
“Other transactions?””
“Different properties. Different owners. The same legal company.””
“Whose company?””
Vanessa's eyes moved toward Warren.
“Warren's.””
Warren stood again.
“That's a lie.””
Vanessa flinched, but she didn't look away.
“Renee found the pattern. She was going to expose it.””
Detective Reed exchanged a look with Officer Brooks.
“If that's true, this investigation may extend beyond Renee's death.””
Vanessa nodded.
“That's why Malcolm Voss wanted the documents destroyed.””
Cole looked down at Maya.
The child was exhausted, her eyes swollen from crying.
But when she heard Voss's name, she lifted her head.
“Mommy said that name.””
Everyone turned toward her.
Maya swallowed.
“She said if anything happened to her, I had to remember the man who came to our house before Warren.””
Detective Reed crouched beside the booth.
“Do you remember what he looked like?””
Maya nodded.
“He had a gold watch. And a scar beside his mouth.””
Vanessa's face suddenly went blank.
Cole noticed.
“What's wrong?””
Vanessa stared at Maya as if the child had just said something impossible.
Then she whispered, “Malcolm Voss doesn't have a scar.””
Maya looked at her.
“Yes, he does.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I've met him dozens of times. He has no scar.””
Maya's breathing quickened.
“Mommy showed me his picture.””
She pointed toward Warren.
“He was wearing a different face.””
For several seconds, nobody understood.
Then Maya reached into her pocket and pulled out a small folded photograph.
The image showed a Black man in a dark suit standing beside Renee.
A gold watch gleamed on his wrist.
A thin scar ran beside his mouth.
And on the back of the photograph, Renee had written a name in blue ink.
Detective Reed turned the photograph over.
His expression changed immediately.
May you like
Because the name written there wasn't Malcolm Voss.
It was *Warren Price*.
