Chapter 14: The Truth Bear Buried

The old house became a battlefield without anyone firing a shot.

Everyone stood still.

Waiting.

Bear looked at Daniel.

The man who had destroyed his family.

The man who had stolen thirty years.

The man who knew pieces of Bear’s life that even Bear didn’t remember.

“Bear: Why come back now?””

Daniel looked around.

“At first?””

He smiled.

“I thought I was here for the key.””

Bear watched him carefully.

“And now?””

Daniel looked at Lena.

“Now I think I’m here because your sister finally made a mistake.””

Lena stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

Daniel ignored her.

“She brought you back together.””

He looked at Bear.

“She gave you the one thing she spent years trying to protect you from.””

Bear’s voice was low.

“The truth.””

Daniel nodded.

“Exactly.””

Bear moved closer.

“You’re afraid of it.””

Daniel smiled.

“No.””

A pause.

“I’m afraid of what you’ll do with it.””

The words hit differently.

Because Bear knew himself.

Or at least he thought he did.

He looked at Lena.

“Tell me.””

She wiped her tears.

“I was the one who found you after the accident.””

Bear waited.

“You weren’t supposed to survive.””

The room went quiet.

“You had a head injury. You couldn’t remember what happened.””

Bear looked away.

“And you decided to let me forget.””

Lena nodded.

“I thought it was the only way.””

His voice broke.

“You thought taking my life away was the only way?””

“No.””

She stepped closer.

“I thought saving your life was the only way.””

Bear stared.

She continued.

“You were going after Daniel.””

Daniel laughed.

“I deserved it.””

Lena looked at him.

“Yes.””

Everyone was surprised by her answer.

“But if Bear killed you, he would have spent the rest of his life running.””

She looked at her brother.

“I couldn’t lose you too.””

Bear looked down.

For years, he had carried anger.

Now he carried something worse.

Understanding.

He hated that he understood.

Elias stepped forward.

“Bear.””

Bear looked at him.

“Your father left evidence.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

A small crack of fear.

Elias noticed.

“He hid it somewhere only you could find.””

Bear frowned.

“Me?””

Elias nodded.

“Because he knew you.””

Marcus spoke quietly.

“He knew you would forget.””

Bear looked at him.

“And he trusted I’d remember?””

“No.””

Marcus shook his head.

“He trusted you’d rebuild.””

The words stayed with him.

Bear looked around the room.

At the people who had lied.

The people who had protected him.

The people who had broken him.

Then he looked at Amara.

She had been watching everything.

Quiet.

Scared.

But still standing.

Bear walked toward her.

He knelt.

“Bear: Are you okay?””

She nodded.

“My mom said you would be angry.””

Bear looked at Lena.

“She was right.””

Amara looked down.

“But she also said you would forgive.””

Bear went silent.

Because that was harder.

Forgiveness.

A thing he had never been good at.

He touched the leather jacket around her shoulders.

“Your mother knows me too well.””

Amara smiled slightly.

Then a sound interrupted them.

A phone vibrating.

Everyone looked.

It wasn’t Bear’s.

It was Daniel’s.

Daniel pulled it out.

His expression changed when he saw the screen.

Bear noticed.

“Who?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Bear took the phone.

The caller name appeared.

One word.

*FATHER.*

Nobody spoke.

Bear stared.

“Your father?””

Daniel slowly nodded.

But fear had replaced confidence.

“Not mine.””

Bear looked at Lena.

Her face had gone pale.

“No.””

Bear turned.

“What?””

Lena whispered:

“Your father.””

The room froze.

Bear looked at the phone.

Impossible.

Again.

Another dead person.

Another lie.

The phone kept ringing.

Finally, Bear answered.

Silence.

Then a voice.

Older.

Weak.

But unmistakable.

“Benjamin.””

Bear almost dropped the phone.

His father.

Alive.

The voice continued.

“I know you’re angry.””

Bear couldn’t speak.

“I know you think everyone betrayed you.””

A pause.

“But there is one thing you need to know.””

Bear gripped the phone.

“What?””

The answer came softly.

“The person you’ve been hunting…”

A breath.

“Was never Daniel.””

Bear’s eyes narrowed.

“Then who?””

The voice hesitated.

Then said:

“The person who destroyed our family…”

A pause.

“Is standing beside you.””

The call ended.

Everyone looked at everyone.

Bear slowly lowered the phone.

And realized something terrifying.

May you like

His father’s warning wasn’t about the past.

It was about now.
