Chapter 7: The Choice Between Truth and Blood

The phone went silent.

But nobody moved.

The final words echoed through the banquet hall.

*Bring Maya to Blackwood Manor alone.*

Maya stood frozen, staring at the old phone in Arthur’s hand.

Her mother’s voice was still inside her head.

My baby.

Two words.

That was all.

But those two words had broken something open inside her.

For ten years, she had wondered if Claire remembered her.

If she had called her name.

If she had looked for her.

If she had ever missed her.

Now she knew.

She had.

“Maya…”

Daniel’s voice pulled her back.

She looked at him.

His face was filled with fear.

Not fear for himself.

For her.

“No,” he said immediately.

Maya blinked.

“What?””

“You’re not going.””

The answer was firm.

The same confidence he used in business meetings returned, but this time it wasn’t about money or power.

It was about protecting her.

Maya looked toward the phone.

“That was my mother.””

“I know.””

“She’s alive.””

Daniel swallowed.

“I know.””

“Then I’m going.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

Maya stared at him.

“You don’t understand.””

“No, I do.””

His voice softened.

“I understand exactly why you want to go.””

He looked at her.

“Because I would do the same thing.””

The honesty surprised her.

“But that doesn’t mean it’s safe.””

Maya looked around the room.

At Arthur.

At Marcus.

At Vanessa.

At the man who had spent years hiding from his own family.

Everyone had fear in their eyes.

Everyone except her.

She was afraid.

Of course she was.

But beneath the fear was something stronger.

Hope.

“I spent my whole life waiting for her,” Maya whispered.

Her voice cracked.

“I waited for a birthday card that never came.””

She looked down.

“I waited for someone to tell me I looked like her.””

A tear slipped down her cheek.

“I waited for someone to say she loved me.””

Daniel’s expression broke.

Maya wiped her face.

“Now I know she’s there.””

She looked at him.

“How can I stay here?””

Nobody had an answer.

Then the old man spoke.

“You shouldn’t go.””

Everyone turned.

Maya looked at him.

The man who had caused so much pain.

The man who had hidden behind silence.

“Why?””

He looked at her.

“Because that is exactly what they want.””

“They?””

His expression changed.

“You still don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

The old man hesitated.

For once, he seemed tired instead of powerful.

“Blackwood Manor is not just a building.””

He looked at Arthur.

“Tell her.””

Arthur stayed silent.

Maya frowned.

“Tell me what?””

Arthur sighed.

“It was where the Carter family kept its darkest secrets.””

Daniel looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

Arthur looked toward the empty banquet hall.

“Years ago, your grandfather used it as a place where private deals were made.””

Maya looked at the old man.

“And my mother?””

Arthur nodded.

“She found something there.””

“What?””

Arthur’s voice lowered.

“The reason people were willing to destroy her.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“And the reason they are still afraid of her.””

Maya looked at him.

“Why?””

Marcus reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

The same kind of envelope that had contained the photograph.

“I never showed you everything.””

Arthur’s eyes narrowed.

“What is that?””

“Something Claire gave me.””

Marcus handed it to Maya.

She looked at him.

“You had this the whole time?””

His expression filled with regret.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I was afraid.””

The answer was simple.

Human.

Maya studied him.

“You knew she was alive?””

Marcus looked away.

“I suspected.””

“That’s not an answer.””

He closed his eyes.

“I knew there was a chance.””

Maya’s disappointment was obvious.

Everyone had known pieces.

Everyone had protected themselves.

And she was the one who suffered.

She opened the envelope.

Inside was a single page.

A handwritten message.

If Maya ever finds this, it means I failed to protect her.

Maya’s hands shook.

She kept reading.

But if she is old enough to understand the truth, she needs to know something.

The room became silent.

Your family is not your enemy. Not all of them.

Maya looked up.

The words confused her.

She continued.

The person who hurt me wanted you to believe everyone had abandoned you.

Her eyes moved across the page.

They wanted you alone.

A chill moved through her.

Because suddenly, everything made sense.

The cruelty.

The silence.

The years without answers.

Someone had wanted her disconnected from everyone.

But remember this, Maya.

The final line was written differently.

Like Claire had pressed the pen harder.

Never trust the person who claims they are protecting you.

Maya slowly lowered the paper.

Everyone looked at her.

“What?””

Daniel asked.

“What did she write?””

Maya didn’t answer.

Because she was looking at Vanessa.

Vanessa’s face had changed.

She knew.

She knew exactly what Claire meant.

“You knew.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

“You knew this message was about you.””

“No.””

But her voice was too weak.

Maya stepped closer.

“You kept saying you were protecting me.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“I was.””

“Then why does my mother say not to trust the person who says that?””

Vanessa had no answer.

Daniel looked at his wife.

“Vanessa.””

She looked away.

The silence was devastating.

Daniel whispered:

“How much have you hidden from me?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“More than I should have.””

Marcus watched her.

“You weren’t the one who took Claire.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“No.””

“Then who was?””

Nobody spoke.

The old man looked toward the door.

Then Maya noticed something.

He wasn’t afraid of Blackwood Manor.

He was afraid of whoever was there.

Finally, he said:

“Someone who has been controlling this family from the shadows.””

Daniel frowned.

“Who?””

The old man didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked at Maya.

“You need to understand something.””

“What?””

“Your mother didn’t disappear because she was weak.””

Maya listened.

“She disappeared because she was protecting you.””

The words hit her harder than she expected.

The old man continued.

“She knew they would come after you.””

Maya whispered:

“So she left me.””

“No.””

His voice softened.

“She sacrificed herself.””

The room fell silent.

For the first time, Maya saw the pain behind his eyes.

He had lost his daughter too.

But that didn’t erase what he had done.

It didn’t bring back the years.

It didn’t fix anything.

Maya looked at Daniel.

Then Arthur.

Then Marcus.

Then Vanessa.

“I’m going.””

Daniel immediately shook his head.

“Maya.””

“I’m not going alone.””

The room reacted.

The old man frowned.

“The message said alone.””

Maya looked at him.

“Messages from people who hurt my family don’t decide my choices anymore.””

Marcus smiled faintly.

A little like he was seeing Claire in her.

Daniel sighed.

“I’m coming with you.””

“No.””

Everyone looked at Maya.

She continued.

“If they want me, they’ll use everyone around me.””

Daniel started to argue.

She stopped him.

“But I’m not walking into a trap without a plan.””

Arthur nodded slowly.

“That’s Claire’s daughter.””

Maya looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

Arthur smiled sadly.

“Exactly what I said.””

For the first time that night, Maya almost smiled.

Almost.

Then the old man’s phone rang.

Everyone froze.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“What is it?”” Daniel asked.

The old man didn’t answer.

He handed the phone to Maya.

On the screen was a photo.

A live photo.

Of Blackwood Manor.

And standing outside the front gate…

Was Claire.

Older.

Pale.

But alive.

Maya covered her mouth.

A second message appeared.

*Come alone, or you’ll never see your mother again.*

Maya stared at the picture.

Her mother was looking directly at the camera.

As if she knew Maya would see it.

Then another message arrived.

This one only had five words.

*Ask your grandfather why.*

Slowly, everyone looked at the old man.

Maya’s heart sank.

Because for the first time…

May you like

She wondered if the person waiting for her at Blackwood Manor wasn’t the only secret.

Maybe the biggest secret had been standing beside her all along.
