Chapter 10: The Man on the Phone
“Before midnight, Daniel, you must decide which one you intend to save.””
I stared at the phone in my hand.
Behind me, Sophie was still holding my coat, her fingers twisted into the fabric. Amara stood beside her, clutching the stuffed rabbit against her chest.
Two little girls.
Two frightened children.
And a man claiming I had to choose between them.
“Who are you?”” I demanded.
A quiet laugh came through the speaker.
“You already know who I am.””
“Alexander Vale is dead.””
“So your father wanted you to believe.””
I looked at my mother.
She had gone so pale that she appeared almost translucent beneath the laboratory lights.
“Mom,” I whispered.
“Is it him?””
She nodded once.
I turned away from the girls and lowered my voice.
“Why should I believe anything you say?””
“You shouldn't,” Alexander replied.
“Not yet. But you should understand that Richard has spent seven years preparing for this moment. He didn't take the girls because he wants money. He took them because one of them can destroy everything he's built.””
“Which one?””
“That depends on whether the records your mother found are authentic.””
My mother stepped closer.
“Alexander, stop using the children to frighten him.””
The man on the phone went silent.
Then he spoke again, and his voice had changed.
“Catherine.””
She gripped my arm.
“You have no right to speak to me.””
“I have every right. You took my daughters.””
“I saved them from you.””
“You saved one of them,” he replied.
“The other you left in a stranger's arms.””
My mother closed her eyes.
I felt something cold settle in my stomach.
“What does he mean?””
She didn't answer.
I looked back at Sophie and Amara.
Sophie was whispering to Amara, trying to comfort her. Amara had stopped crying, but her lower lip trembled whenever the phone made a sound.
I wanted to destroy it.
Instead, I pressed it harder against my ear.
“Tell me what happened seven years ago.””
Alexander sighed.
“My daughter Lily was pregnant. Richard discovered the pregnancy and decided the child could be used to secure control of the trust. He arranged for the baby to disappear.””
“Which baby?””
“The one you know as Sophie.””
I shook my head.
“No. Sophie was adopted through a private arrangement.””
“An arrangement your father manipulated.””
“My father is dead.””
“Daniel, your father is standing in the laboratory with you.””
I turned sharply.
The room behind me was empty.
My father had disappeared while we were dealing with the girls.
A door slammed somewhere down the corridor.
I swore under my breath.
Alexander continued.
“Your father was never the mastermind. Richard was. Your father helped him falsify the original inheritance documents, then spent the rest of his life trying to escape the consequences.””
“Why would he help Richard?””
“Because Richard had proof that your father had stolen company funds. He threatened to expose him unless he cooperated.””
I looked at the blood on my sleeve.
“And the girls?””
“Both were born on the same night. Lily delivered twins. Richard arranged for the birth records to be altered.
One child was registered as dead. The other was given to a family who believed they were adopting an unrelated infant.””
My legs felt weak.
“Sophie was given to me.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because Richard believed you would raise her without ever questioning her identity. You were the perfect guardian. A wealthy man with a respected name, a childless marriage, and no reason to suspect the people handling the adoption.””
I remembered my wife's face when she'd first held Sophie.
The way she had cried with happiness.
The way I'd promised to spend the rest of my life protecting our daughter.
None of that had been a lie.
But someone had built the beginning of our family on a lie, too.
“Where was Amara?””
“With Lily. Catherine helped her escape with the second child.””
I looked at my mother.
“You knew?””
Tears slid down her cheeks.
“I knew Lily had delivered twins. I knew Richard wanted them separated. I thought I had saved both children.””
“Thought?””
She looked toward Amara.
“I arranged for Lily to take one child and disappear. The other was placed with you because I believed your father could protect her.””
I couldn't speak.
My mother had known Sophie wasn't biologically mine.
She had watched me raise her for seven years.
She had watched me teach her to ride a bicycle, take her to school, and tuck her into bed.
And she had never told me.
“Why?”” I finally whispered.
“Because Richard had already threatened to kill both girls. I thought if you believed Sophie was yours, you would protect her without asking questions.””
I stared at her.
“You let me love a child under false pretenses.””
“No,” she said, her voice breaking.
“I let you love a child. The rest was my cowardice.””
I wanted to hate her.
Part of me did.
But Sophie reached for my hand, and I squeezed it.
Whatever else happened, she would never have to earn her place in my life.
I turned back to the phone.
“You said I have to choose. Explain.””
“Richard has taken Lily.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
“He has her at the original Whitmore estate. He intends to force her to sign away her rights to the trust. If she refuses, he'll make the girls watch what happens to their mother.””
Amara gasped.
“Mama?””
I crouched beside her.
“Alexander,” I said, forcing my voice to remain steady, “if you know where Lily is, send me the address.””
“I will. But Richard has also taken something else.””
“What?””
“The original trust document.””
I looked at the folded paper in my hand.
The record connecting Lily to the twins.
“This?””
“No. That's a copy. The original is hidden in a safe at the estate. It contains the name of the fourth child.””
“The child declared dead.””
“Yes.””
“Who is it?””
Alexander's voice dropped.
“Richard.””
I stared at the phone.
“That makes no sense.””
“Richard was adopted into the family under a false identity. He was the fourth child, Daniel. The one your mother was told had died.””
My mother made a strangled sound.
“No,” she whispered.
Alexander continued.
“Richard has spent his entire life trying to erase the evidence that he was born outside the family line. If the original trust is exposed, he loses everything. The company.
The inheritance. His identity.””
“And the girls?””
“They are the legitimate heirs. Both of them.””
I closed my eyes.
For the first time, the pieces began to fit.
The four pendants.
The altered records.
The child declared dead.
The obsession with DNA.
Richard wasn't trying to establish who belonged to the family.
He was trying to prevent anyone from proving who didn't.
“Send me the address,” I said.
“I will.””
“And if this is another trap?””
“Then you will discover that I am exactly the man your mother says I am.””
The call ended.
A message arrived seconds later.
An address in Westchester.
The old Whitmore estate.
I looked at my mother.
“We're going back.””
She nodded.
Then Sophie tugged at my sleeve.
“Daddy, will Amara come with us?””
I knelt in front of her.
“Of course.””
“Even if she's not your daughter?””
The question hurt, but I understood why she was asking.
She had heard too much.
I took her face gently between my hands.
“Listen to me, Sophie. I don't care whose name is on a piece of paper. I don't care what a blood test says. You are my daughter because I love you, and I will never stop.””
She wrapped her arms around my neck.
Amara stepped closer.
“Does that mean I can call you Daddy, too?””
I looked at her.
Then I opened my arms.
“If you want to.””
She ran into them.
For a moment, I held both girls against me.
Two daughters.
One family.
And a man who believed he could make me choose between them.
I rose and turned toward the exit.
My mother caught my wrist.
“Daniel, there's one thing Alexander didn't tell you.””
“What?””
She looked at the girls.
“Richard isn't afraid of losing the inheritance.””
“Then what is he afraid of?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Being exposed as the man who ordered the death of his own mother.””
Before I could ask another question, the laboratory lights went out.
A heavy door slammed behind us.
And from somewhere in the darkness, a man's voice said:
“Now that you've heard the truth, Daniel, it's time to hear the rest of the story.””
May you like
It was my father.
And he was standing between us and the only exit.
