The Gown They Tried to Take / Chapter 1 / 9

Chapter 1: The Tear

“You don’t deserve this.””

The sound of fabric ripping cut through the backstage noise.

Nia froze.

For one impossible second, she stared at the black graduation gown hanging from Vanessa’s hands, unable to understand what had just happened. Then the torn fabric slid apart from her shoulders to her waist.

Vanessa had ripped it straight down the middle.

Nia stumbled backward, one hand clutching the jagged edge of the gown, the other pressed against her chest.

“Vanessa…” Nia whispered.

Vanessa threw one half of the gown at her.

“My son should be wearing it.””

Outside the burgundy curtains, applause thundered through the auditorium. A staff member’s voice echoed faintly from the stage.

“Please welcome our graduating class…”

Nia’s breathing became shallow.

“But I’m graduating,” she said.

Vanessa adjusted the sleeve of her elegant cream dress as if nothing unusual had happened.

“Not tonight.””

Nia looked down at herself. Her formal dress was still beneath the ruined gown. Her braids had been carefully styled that morning. Her graduation cap sat crooked on her head.

She had spent years imagining this moment.

Not this.

“You promised me,” Nia said, her voice shaking.

“You promised you’d help me get ready.””

“I helped you,” Vanessa replied.

“I gave you a roof. I fed you. I made sure you looked presentable.””

Nia swallowed hard.

“That doesn’t give you the right to do this.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You always think everything belongs to you.””

Nia backed into a folding chair.

“What does that even mean?””

Vanessa pointed toward the torn gown.

“It means my son should have been standing out there.””

Nia stared at her.

“He graduated last year.””

Vanessa’s jaw tightened.

“That doesn't matter.””

A cheer rose from the auditorium.

Nia flinched.

Someone outside called another graduate’s name.

She looked toward the backstage entrance.

“Vanessa, please.””

“Please what?””

“I worked for this.””

Vanessa leaned closer.

“So did my son.””

Nia’s eyes filled with tears.

“Why are you doing this to me?””

Vanessa didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, she reached down, picked up the other half of the gown, and held it out.

“Take it.””

Nia stared at the fabric.

“I’m not putting that on.””

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“Then go out there without it.””

Nia’s lips trembled.

“You want me to walk across that stage like this?””

“I want you to understand something.””

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“Being called family doesn’t mean you’re entitled to everything.””

The backstage door suddenly opened.

Nia turned.

A woman stood in the doorway wearing a dark coat, her face tired, her eyes fierce.

Angela.

Nia stopped breathing.

The noise from the auditorium seemed to disappear.

“Mom?””

Angela’s eyes moved from Nia’s tear-streaked face to the torn graduation gown.

Then to Vanessa.

Her expression changed.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

Angela slowly stepped inside and closed the door behind her.

Vanessa’s face drained of color.

“Angela,” she whispered.

Angela didn’t answer.

She reached into her bag.

Nia watched her pull out a sealed folder.

Angela walked toward Vanessa.

“I came back for my daughter.””

Vanessa took one step backward.

Angela lifted the folder between them.

“And I brought proof of what you did.””

Vanessa stared at the seal across the folder.

Then at Angela.

“What did you bring?””

Angela’s voice was quiet.

“The truth.””

Vanessa lunged.

Her hand closed around the folder before Nia could move.

“Vanessa, stop!”” Angela shouted.

Vanessa tore the first page in half.

Nia gasped.

Angela reached for her.

“Don’t!””

The ripped paper fluttered toward the floor.

For a split second, the second page underneath became visible.

An official court seal.

A family photograph attached to the corner.

And a name Nia recognized.

Nia stared at it.

Her voice barely came out.

“What did you do?””

May you like

Vanessa froze.

And for the first time that night, she looked afraid.
