Chapter 7: The Recording My Father Left Behind

I held the flash drive in my hand for almost an hour before I plugged it in.

Not because I didn’t want to know.

Because I was terrified of knowing.

There was a difference.

For twenty-two years, I had lived with one version of my father.

A man who was gone.

A man whose face existed only in old photographs.

A man whose name my mother spoke carefully, like saying it too loudly might bring back pain.

Now I had discovered there were multiple versions of Daniel Carter.

The father who loved me.

The man who disappeared.

The person who left behind evidence.

And maybe the person who had been fighting a battle I knew nothing about.

My laptop screen glowed in the dark room.

The flash drive appeared.

One folder.

One file.

No title.

Just a date.

The night he vanished.

My hand hovered over the mouse.

Behind me, Angela sat silently.

She had not tried to stop me.

That scared me.

My mother spent twenty-two years trying to protect me from the truth.

Now she was letting me open it.

Maybe because she knew there was no protecting me anymore.

I clicked.

The video started with darkness.

For several seconds, there was only sound.

A car engine.

Distant voices.

Then a light flickered on.

My father appeared.

Daniel Carter.

Younger than the man in the photographs.

Alive.

Real.

My chest tightened.

I had imagined this moment my entire life.

Meeting him.

Hearing his voice.

But I never imagined it would happen through a recording made before he disappeared.

He was sitting inside a car.

His face looked tired.

Not afraid.

Tired.

“Angela,” he said.

I looked at my mother.

She covered her mouth.

Hearing his voice after twenty-two years broke something inside her.

Daniel looked directly into the camera.

“If you’re watching this, something went wrong.””

I leaned closer.

His voice continued.

“I need you to listen carefully. Do not trust anyone who tells you they know what happened to me.””

A pause.

“Especially Richard.””

My eyes widened.

Angela looked down.

Daniel continued.

“Richard is not working alone.””

The room became completely silent.

Not even the sound of the city outside reached us.

“I spent six months trying to understand what was happening inside the company. At first, I thought it was only money.””

He shook his head.

“It wasn’t.””

The video glitched.

Then returned.

“There are people using our company for something much bigger.””

My heart raced.

“What?”” I whispered.

Angela looked at me.

She had never heard this part.

“Daniel never told me,” she said quietly.

I looked back at the screen.

“Someone has been moving money through accounts connected to government contracts, private companies, and organizations that don’t officially exist.””

My breathing slowed.

This was bigger than a business dispute.

Bigger than two friends turning against each other.

Daniel looked exhausted.

“I don’t know how far this goes.””

He leaned closer.

“But I know one thing.””

A pause.

“If anything happens to me, it wasn’t because I found stolen money.””

He looked directly into the camera.

“It was because I found out who was behind it.””

The video stopped.

For five seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then the screen went black.

“That’s it?”” I asked.

Angela shook her head.

“No.””

She looked confused.

“That wasn’t the whole file.””

I checked the folder.

There was nothing else.

“One video.””

“That doesn’t make sense.””

My phone buzzed.

Both of us froze.

Another message.

Unknown number.

*You watched the first part.*

A second message appeared.

*Now watch the part your mother hid.*

My blood ran cold.

I looked at Angela.

“What does that mean?””

Her face changed.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

“Mom?””

She looked toward the flash drive.

“I didn’t know there was another part.””

I picked it up.

“Someone does.””

The next morning, I took the flash drive to a computer technician I trusted from college.

His name was Jamal.

He had fixed every broken laptop my classmates owned and somehow knew more about technology than most professionals.

When I explained that I needed him to recover hidden files, he immediately noticed something strange.

“This drive was altered.””

I looked at him.

“Altered how?””

“Someone removed data.””

“Can you recover it?””

He looked at the screen.

“Maybe.””

“How long?””

He glanced at the progress bar.

“Depends on how much someone tried to erase.””

I stood behind him.

Waiting.

Watching.

After twenty minutes, Jamal leaned closer.

“There.””

A hidden folder appeared.

My heart started pounding.

“What is it?””

He clicked.

A video file appeared.

Created the same night.

But recorded later.

The file name was simple.

*For Marcus.*

I couldn’t speak.

Jamal looked at me.

“Should I play it?””

I nodded.

The screen turned black.

Then my father appeared again.

But this time, he wasn’t inside a car.

He was standing somewhere dark.

A storage room.

His face looked different.

More serious.

More desperate.

“Marcus.””

Hearing my name from his mouth almost broke me.

“If you’re seeing this, then you’re old enough to know the truth.””

He took a breath.

“I wish I could have told you myself.””

I felt my eyes burn.

“I wish I could have watched you grow up.””

My hand covered my mouth.

Behind me, Angela started crying.

Daniel continued.

“I know your mother will blame herself.””

He paused.

“Please don’t let her.””

I looked at Angela.

She shook her head.

“She knew,” I whispered.

Daniel looked into the camera.

“Angela did what she had to do.””

My mother covered her face.

“She protected you.””

The video continued.

“Marcus, there is something important you need to understand.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“The person responsible for what happened to me is someone you know.””

I froze.

Someone I knew?

The screen flickered.

Then his voice became quieter.

“Someone who has been watching your life from a distance.””

My heart pounded.

“Someone who knows exactly who you are.””

The video glitched again.

Then a sound appeared.

A door opening.

Daniel looked away.

His expression changed.

Someone was there.

“Wait.””

He turned.

The camera shook.

A voice came from outside the frame.

A man’s voice.

“Daniel.””

Every muscle in my body froze.

Because I knew that voice.

I had heard it yesterday.

Calm.

Controlled.

Confident.

Richard Vale.

Daniel looked terrified for the first time.

“You shouldn’t have come here.””

Richard’s voice responded.

“You always were too stubborn.””

The camera moved slightly.

Then Richard appeared.

Younger.

But unmistakable.

My hands tightened.

The two men faced each other.

Richard spoke.

“You should have stopped digging.””

Daniel stared at him.

“You destroyed everything.””

“No.””

Richard shook his head.

“You did.””

The recording crackled.

Daniel stepped closer.

“You hurt people.””

Richard smiled.

Not a happy smile.

A cold one.

“You still think this is about money.””

Daniel said nothing.

Richard continued.

“It’s always been about control.””

The screen shook.

Then Daniel looked toward the camera.

Like he suddenly remembered it was recording.

His eyes changed.

Fear.

Not for himself.

For someone else.

For me.

“Marcus,” he whispered.

Then the video cut.

Black screen.

No ending.

No explanation.

Just silence.

Jamal turned around.

“Was that supposed to happen?””

I didn’t answer.

I couldn’t.

Because there was one detail I couldn’t ignore.

The video was incomplete.

Someone had cut it.

Someone had removed the final moments.

Someone had wanted me to see enough to ask questions.

But not enough to know the answer.

My phone buzzed again.

This time, the message was from the same unknown number.

*Now you know Richard was there.*

A second message.

*But you still don’t know why your mother was the last person to see your father alive.*

I looked at Angela.

Her face went pale.

“What does that mean?”” I asked.

She didn’t answer.

“Mom.””

Her eyes filled.

Then she whispered:

“Because after Richard left…”

I waited.

“…your father told me the truth.””

“What truth?””

Angela looked at the frozen image of Daniel on the screen.

And said the words that made my entire body go cold.

“He told me Richard wasn’t the person I needed to be afraid of.””

The room fell silent.

“Then who?””

My mother looked at me.

May you like

And whispered:

“Me.””
