Chapter 8: The Voice That Wasn't Her Father's

Margaret took possession of the flash drive without connecting it to her laptop.

“We are not opening this on an unsecured device,” she said.

“If it contains evidence, we need to preserve it properly.””

Ryan looked frustrated.

“We don't have time for a forensic investigation.””

“We have time to avoid destroying potentially important evidence,” Margaret replied.

Nia stood near the window, her arms folded tightly across her chest.

“Ryan, you said you hadn't opened it.””

“I haven't.””

“Then how do you know it's a recording of my father?””

“My father told me.””

“And you believed him?””

Ryan looked away.

“I believed he had something that could end this dispute.””

David stepped toward him.

“What dispute? I was the one who lost my career. I was the one who signed a settlement under threat. What exactly did your father tell you?””

Ryan hesitated.

“He said the original agreement was never executed properly. He said there was a substitute witness.””

“Who?””

“My grandfather's personal secretary.””

David shook his head.

“Eleanor Price?””

Ryan nodded.

Nia watched her father carefully.

“Do you know her?””

“I remember the name. She handled Arthur's appointments and correspondence. She was present during several meetings, but I never met her privately.””

Claire spoke up.

“Eleanor disappeared shortly after Grandfather was supposedly buried.””

David turned toward her.

“Disappeared?””

“She resigned from the family company, sold her house, and moved away. My father told everyone she had gone abroad.””

Margaret made a note.

“Do we know where she is now?””

“Not yet.””

Nia looked at the flash drive.

“So the recording could prove that Dad never signed the agreement?””

“Or it could be a fake,” Margaret said.

“We need to verify its origin, metadata, and contents before drawing conclusions.””

Ryan ran a hand through his hair.

“My father said the recording would prove that David accepted the settlement willingly.””

David's expression hardened.

“Then why did he tell you to destroy it?””

Ryan didn't answer.

Nia stepped closer.

“Because it doesn't show what he wants it to show.””

Ryan met her eyes.

“I don't know.””

“You keep saying that.””

“Because I don't know!””

His voice echoed through the suite.

For a moment, everyone fell silent.

Ryan looked at Nia, breathing hard.

“I knew the trust existed. I knew there was a marriage clause. I knew my father wanted the transfer completed. But I didn't know he was hiding your grandfather or that the original settlement might have been forged.””

“You signed the transfer resolution.””

“Yes.””

“You watched Vanessa cut my mother's hair.””

“I didn't think she would go that far.””

“You told her to make Mom presentable.””

Ryan swallowed.

“Yes.””

Nia nodded slowly.

“Then stop telling me what you didn't know and start telling me what you did.””

Ryan looked down at the carpet.

“My father said the trust would become vulnerable if you married someone outside the family. He said the transfer would simplify the administration of the assets and prevent future disputes.””

“And you accepted that explanation.””

“Yes.””

“Did you know my mother had received $250,000?””

Ryan hesitated.

“Yes.””

Evelyn made a small, wounded sound.

Nia turned toward him.

“How long have you known?””

“Since last year.””

“Last year?””

“My father showed me the account records when we started discussing the wedding.””

“Why?””

“He said it was part of the family's historical obligations.””

Nia stared at him.

“You had an entire year to tell me.””

“I thought I could resolve it privately.””

“By marrying me?””

Ryan didn't answer.

Claire gave a bitter laugh.

“You're not the first Whitmore man to confuse control with protection.””

Ryan rounded on her.

“You have no idea what I've been dealing with.””

“I know you were willing to let Nia marry you without telling her that your family intended to control her money.””

“I was trying to keep her out of a legal nightmare.””

“You were trying to keep her uninformed.””

Nia raised her hand.

“Both of you, stop.””

She looked at Margaret.

“Can we get the flash drive examined today?””

“We can arrange urgent forensic imaging, but we should avoid promising a result before the examination is complete.””

“Do it.””

Margaret called a colleague who specialized in digital evidence. While she spoke, David moved toward Evelyn.

“Are you all right?””

Evelyn nodded, but her face remained pale.

“I keep thinking about what Arthur told me when he gave me the key.””

“What did he say?””

“He said, 'If they ever try to make your daughter choose between love and the truth, make sure she chooses the truth.''”

David stared at her.

“Why didn't you tell me that before?””

“Because I thought he was speaking about the trust. I didn't know it would lead to this.””

Nia listened quietly.

Her mother had been carrying pieces of the truth for years, each one too frightening to fit into the life she'd built.

Nia understood the fear now.

But understanding did not erase the damage.

“Mom,” she said, “when we get through this, we're going to have a very long conversation about why you thought keeping me in the dark was the only way to protect me.””

Evelyn nodded.

“I know.””

“And I may be angry for a while.””

“I know that, too.””

Nia reached for her hand.

“But I'm not going anywhere.””

Evelyn began to cry.

This time, she didn't hide her face.

A little after three, the hotel security supervisor returned.

“Ms. Miller, we've reviewed the hallway footage.””

Nia stood.

“What did you find?””

“A man entered the private floor at 11:42 a.m. He used a staff access card and wore a hotel maintenance uniform.””

“Did you identify him?””

“Not yet. His face was partially obscured by a cap, but we have a clear image of the access card.””

He showed them the footage on a tablet.

The man walked past the bridal suite, paused outside the door, and turned his head toward the camera.

Nia leaned closer.

The man's face was mostly hidden, but his left hand was visible.

A gold signet ring gleamed on his little finger.

Claire gasped.

“My father's ring.””

Ryan went completely still.

“Are you sure?””

“I grew up seeing it every day.””

The supervisor paused the footage.

“We're checking the access logs. The card was issued to a contractor who says he lost it two weeks ago.””

“Can you give us a copy?”” Margaret asked.

“We'll need to follow the hotel's procedures, but we can preserve the footage for the investigation.””

After he left, Claire sat down heavily.

“My father was here.””

Nia looked at Ryan.

“Did you know he was coming?””

“No.””

“Did he tell you to destroy the flash drive because he knew we'd find the original schedule?””

Ryan's expression turned troubled.

“I don't know.””

Claire leaned forward.

“Then call him.””

Ryan stared at her.

“What?””

“Call your father. Put him on speaker. Ask him why he sent someone to the bridal suite.””

Ryan shook his head.

“He won't answer questions like that.””

“Then ask him why he lied about Grandfather's death.””

Ryan's face tightened.

“Claire, you don't understand what you're asking.””

“I understand perfectly.””

She stood and moved toward him.

“You've spent your entire life believing that if you obeyed our father, he'd eventually trust you with the truth. But he doesn't trust you, Ryan. He trusts your usefulness.””

Ryan looked as though she had struck him.

Nia watched him carefully.

For a second, she saw the possibility that he, too, had been manipulated by Richard Whitmore.

But being manipulated didn't make him innocent.

It only meant he had chosen to pass the pressure down to someone weaker.

Ryan finally took out his phone.

He dialed.

The call rang four times before a man's voice answered.

“Ryan. Where are you?””

“At the hotel.””

“Is the ceremony finished?””

“No.””

A pause.

“What do you mean, no?””

“Nia knows about the trust.””

Silence.

Then Richard spoke in a low, controlled voice.

“Get her to sign the transfer papers. We can discuss the rest later.””

Ryan closed his eyes.

“Dad, did you send someone to the bridal suite?””

“Don't be ridiculous.””

“We have footage of a man wearing your ring.””

Another silence.

Richard's voice became colder.

“Listen to me carefully. You will bring Nia to the ceremony, and you will ensure that the marriage takes place. If you fail, everything your grandfather did to protect this family will be exposed.””

Nia stepped closer to the phone.

“Mr. Whitmore, I have a question.””

Richard paused.

“Who is this?””

“The woman your son was supposed to marry.””

“Then you should be getting dressed.””

“I'm not marrying him.””

“You don't understand the consequences.””

“I understand that your family has lied to mine for twenty-three years.””

Richard gave a quiet, dismissive laugh.

“Your father signed the agreement. Your mother accepted the money. If you choose to make this public, you will be dragging your own family through the mud.””

Nia felt her hands begin to shake.

But her voice remained steady.

“Then perhaps we should all see the documents.””

Richard's voice dropped to a whisper.

“If you open that storage box, Nia, you will learn why your father was paid to stay silent.””

The call ended.

Ryan lowered the phone.

Claire looked at him with disgust.

“He knows.””

David stared at the table.

“He knows what's in the box.””

Nia turned toward the window.

Outside, the hotel courtyard was filled with guests who had begun to wonder why the ceremony hadn't started.

She had once believed that the hardest part of marriage would be learning how to share a life with another person.

Now she understood that the hardest part was recognizing when someone had mistaken her trust for permission to control her.

Margaret's phone rang.

She listened, then looked at Nia.

“The digital evidence specialist can examine the flash drive within the hour. But there's something else.””

“What?””

“The bank has sent us a preliminary access record for the storage box.””

She placed a printed page on the table.

The authorization carried Nia's name, but the signature was not hers.

At the bottom, beneath the forged signature, was a witness certification.

The witness's name was clearly typed.

*Eleanor Price.*

Claire stared at it.

“That can't be right.””

Nia looked at her.

“Why?””

May you like

Claire's voice shook.

“Because Eleanor Price died two years ago.””
