Chapter 4: The Family She Tried to Replace

The next few days were harder than Ethan expected.

The anger faded.

That was the strange thing about betrayal.

At first, it burned.

Then it settled into something heavier.

Grief.

Not just for what Diana had done.

For what Ethan thought they had.

He had imagined a future.

Family vacations.

Birthdays.

Holiday dinners.

A house full of laughter.

Now he had to accept that the future he pictured was built on someone who didn’t fully accept his past.

And the past wasn’t something he could remove.

Especially not Emma.

At work, Ethan found himself staring at documents without reading them.

He owned a small construction company in Atlanta. For years, he had built homes for families.

He knew how important foundations were.

A house could look beautiful from the outside.

But if the foundation was weak, eventually everything collapsed.

He realized relationships were the same.

That evening, Lorraine came over for dinner.

She watched Oliver laugh while eating macaroni and cheese.

“He seems better,” she said.

Ethan nodded.

“He is.””

“Are you?””

Ethan smiled slightly.

“I don’t know.””

Lorraine reached across the table.

“You don’t have to be.””

He looked at her.

“Mom…”

“You spent two years trying to make everyone comfortable.””

She squeezed his hand.

“Your son. Diana. Your memories of Emma.””

Ethan looked down.

“You think I failed?””

“No.””

Lorraine shook her head.

“I think you loved people so much that you ignored what was happening in front of you.””

That hurt because it was true.

After dinner, Ethan helped Oliver get ready for bed.

As he tucked him in, Oliver touched the necklace.

“Dad?””

“Yeah?””

“Am I allowed to miss Mommy?””

Ethan sat beside him.

“Always.””

“Even when I’m happy?””

His heart broke.

“Yes.””

Oliver nodded.

“Diana said if I keep thinking about Mommy, I’ll never be happy.””

Ethan felt anger rise.

But he controlled it.

“Your mom would want you to be happy.””

“She would?””

“Absolutely.””

“Then why did Diana want me to forget?””

Ethan looked at his son.

Because he deserved honesty.

“Some people think forgetting is the only way to heal.””

Oliver was quiet.

“But Mommy didn’t think that.””

“No.””

Ethan smiled.

“Your mommy believed love stays with us.””

After Oliver fell asleep, Ethan returned downstairs.

His phone was ringing.

Unknown number.

He almost ignored it.

But something made him answer.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice spoke.

“Mr. Walker?””

“Yes?””

“My name is Carla Bennett. I worked with Emma at the hospital.””

Ethan sat down.

“Okay.””

“I heard what happened.””

His grip tightened around the phone.

“How?””

“Lorraine called someone she trusted. She wanted to know if there was anything else about Emma’s belongings.””

Ethan felt uneasy.

“Did you know about the necklace?””

There was silence.

Then:

“Yes.””

His heart dropped.

“What?””

Carla sighed.

“Emma told me about it.””

“When?””

“Before she passed.””

Ethan stood.

“What did she say?””

“She told me she wanted Oliver to have both halves someday.””

Ethan closed his eyes.

“Then why did nobody know?””

Another pause.

“Because after the funeral, Diana came to the hospital.””

The room became still.

“What?””

“She said she was helping organize Emma’s belongings.””

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“She wasn’t family.””

“I know.””

Carla’s voice became softer.

“But she said you were overwhelmed. She said she was trying to help.””

Ethan felt sick.

“She took it.””

“I don’t know exactly what happened.””

Carla continued.

“But I remember she asked questions about the necklace. She wanted to know why it mattered.””

Ethan looked toward the stairs where Oliver slept.

The truth was becoming clearer.

Diana didn’t discover Emma’s memory.

She investigated it.

She searched for the pieces of Emma’s life.

And then she decided which pieces Oliver was allowed to keep.

“Mr. Walker,” Carla said quietly.

“There’s something else.””

Ethan closed his eyes.

“What?””

“She wasn’t just interested in the necklace.””

“What else?””

“She asked about Emma’s letters.””

Ethan froze.

The box.

The missing letters.

The memories Emma wanted Oliver to have.

His voice lowered.

“Did she find them?””

“I don’t know.””

Ethan ended the call slowly.

Then he looked around the house.

For two years, Diana had been inside his family.

Inside his home.

Inside his son’s life.

And he finally understood.

The necklace wasn’t the only thing she had taken.

There were other pieces.

Other memories.

May you like

Other secrets.

And Ethan was going to find every single one.
