Chapter 6: The Man Behind the Curtain
We called the police.
At least, Alexander did.
I wanted to.
I really did.
But something stopped me.
Because Robert wasn’t just a criminal.
He was family.
And admitting what he had done meant accepting that the man who taught me how to tie my shoes was the same man who helped destroy my father’s life.
The police arrived.
They searched the storage unit.
They found no sign of Robert.
No fingerprints.
No evidence.
Nothing.
Just like someone who had spent years learning how to disappear.
But we had something he didn’t know about.
The flash drive.
The three of us went back to Alexander’s office because he had the equipment needed to access the files safely.
I sat in front of the computer while the drive loaded.
My father’s name appeared on the screen.
THOMAS BENNETT — NEURAL INTERFACE PROJECT
My breath caught.
The folders opened.
Research.
Blueprints.
Medical data.
Years of work.
A lifetime.
Then we found the video.
My father appeared on screen.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
I covered my mouth.
Seeing him again hurt in a way I wasn’t prepared for.
“Claire,” Ethan whispered.
I couldn’t answer.
My father looked directly into the camera.
“If you’re watching this, something happened.””
He paused.
“I hope I’m wrong.””
Tears filled my eyes.
“Your father recorded this before he died,” Alexander said quietly.
I nodded.
My father continued.
“Thomas Bennett’s research was created to help people with neurological injuries. It was never intended to become private property.””
A document appeared behind him.
“Unfortunately, certain investors attempted to remove my ownership rights and restrict access to patients who needed this technology.””
The next names appeared.
Charles Cross.
Victoria Ashford.
Robert Bennett.
My heart sank.
My uncle’s name.
My father continued.
“Robert betrayed me.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
“He had access to my research because I trusted him.””
I closed my eyes.
Even after everything, hearing my father say it made it real.
“He believed he was making a smart business decision. He convinced himself that control was necessary.””
My father leaned closer to the camera.
“But control without compassion becomes cruelty.””
The video paused.
Then another file opened.
Financial records.
Payments.
Transfers.
Evidence.
Victoria’s company.
Charles Cross’s private accounts.
Robert’s hidden transactions.
It was everything.
Years of lies.
Alexander stared at the screen.
“My father knew.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“He knew about the theft.””
His voice broke slightly.
“My father died before he could answer for it.””
That was when I understood.
Alexander wasn’t just helping me because he felt guilty.
He was searching for answers too.
The final file was labeled:
ETHAN.
My heart stopped.
“No.””
Ethan looked at me.
“Open it.””
I shook my head.
“Ethan—”
“Open it.””
The video showed a hospital hallway.
A younger Ethan.
Seventeen years old.
Confused.
Scared.
Then Robert appeared.
My uncle.
Talking to someone off-camera.
“We need Bennett to cooperate.””
The person responded.
“And if he doesn’t?””
Robert looked at Ethan.
“Then he loses the one thing he loves most.””
I felt sick.
My brother reached for my hand.
But I couldn’t move.
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
I answered.
This time, there was no distorted voice.
It was clear.
It was Victoria Ashford.
“Claire.””
My blood ran cold.
“How did you get this number?””
She ignored the question.
“You have something that belongs to me.””
I looked at the flash drive.
“No.””
Her voice became colder.
“You don’t understand what you’re holding.””
“I understand enough.””
A pause.
Then Victoria said:
“Your father thought he could save the world.””
Her voice lowered.
“He was wrong.””
I stood.
“Where are you?””
Ethan looked at me.
Victoria continued.
“But maybe you’ll make the same mistake.””
The call ended.
Alexander looked at me.
“She knows.””
I looked at the evidence.
At my father’s final message.
At Ethan.
At everything my family had lost.
Then I made a decision.
For six years, everyone had been protecting the truth.
Now I was going to expose it.
No matter who tried to stop me.
