Chapter 6: The Man Who Tried to Save My Wife

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

Not me.

Not Nia.

Not even Maya.

The storage unit was dark except for the thin line of light beneath the door where Daniel stood on the other side.

My first instinct was anger.

Pure, burning anger.

Because anger was easier than pain.

Anger was easier than admitting that the person I trusted most had been standing in the middle of my family’s nightmare all along.

I walked toward the door.

“You expect me to believe that?””

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

That silence told me he was choosing his words.

And I hated that.

I hated that even now, even after everything, he was still calculating.

“You have ten seconds,” I said.

“Adrian—”

“Nine.””

A long breath.

“Eight.””

“Open the door.””

I stopped.

Because that was not what I expected.

“You want me to open the door?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because if I wanted to hurt you, you would already be hurt.””

The words should have sounded comforting.

Instead, they sounded like a threat.

I looked at Nia.

She shook her head slightly.

Not no.

A warning.

Be careful.

I unlocked the door.

Daniel stood there alone.

No Marcus.

No security.

No threatening smile.

Just my best friend.

The man who had sat beside me during the darkest night of my life.

But something was different.

He looked older.

Exhausted.

Like he had been carrying a weight he was finally too tired to hold.

His eyes moved to Maya.

Immediately, his expression changed.

“Hey, sweetheart.””

Maya stepped closer to me.

Not to him.

Daniel noticed.

And the pain on his face was real.

That almost made it worse.

“Why are you here?”” I asked.

Daniel looked at the blue folder in my hand.

“Because I knew you would find it.””

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“And you still let me?””

His jaw tightened.

“I tried to stop Sophie from hiding it.””

My anger rose.

“You tried to stop my wife?””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“I tried to stop her from putting herself in danger.””

Nia stepped forward.

“Then why did you help Marcus?””

Daniel looked at her.

The surprise on his face was immediate.

“You know who I am?””

Nia laughed bitterly.

“Sophie told me enough.””

His eyes softened.

“Nia…”

She froze.

The way he said her name was different.

Not like someone meeting her.

Like someone remembering her.

“You knew her too,” Nia whispered.

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“How?””

He looked away.

“Because Sophie wasn’t the only person trying to protect you.””

I almost laughed.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I held up the folder.

“Everyone was protecting me while lying to me.””

Daniel accepted the accusation.

Maybe because he deserved it.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice cracked.

“You don’t know what it feels like to find out your wife had an entire life you never knew about.””

Daniel looked at Maya.

Then at me.

“I know exactly what it feels like.””

That stopped me.

“What?””

He swallowed.

“Sophie had secrets before she met you.””

Nia looked confused.

“What secrets?””

Daniel walked into the storage unit slowly.

“Sophie wasn’t investigating Marcus because of money.””

He looked at the documents.

“She was investigating him because of a person.””

I frowned.

“Who?””

Daniel’s expression changed.

A mixture of sadness and regret.

“Her sister.””

The words hit harder than expected.

I stared at him.

“Sophie didn’t have a sister.””

Daniel looked at me.

“She did.””

My entire body went cold.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“Sophie told me her parents died when she was young. She was an only child.””

“She told you what she needed you to know.””

I looked away.

The pain was immediate.

Not because Sophie had lied.

Because I realized how little I knew about the person I loved most.

Daniel continued.

“Her sister’s name was Elena.””

Nia looked at the notebook.

“Elena…”

I turned.

“You know that name?””

Nia nodded slowly.

“Sophie mentioned her.””

My heart sank.

“How many secrets did my wife leave behind?””

Nobody answered.

Because nobody knew.

Daniel looked at the blue folder.

“Inside that folder is why Sophie was killed.””

I opened it again.

The documents were organized.

Not randomly.

Carefully.

Sophie had prepared this.

She knew someone would eventually find it.

The first page was a financial report.

The second was a photograph.

A woman.

Younger.

Standing beside Sophie.

I knew immediately.

The resemblance was impossible to miss.

Same eyes.

Same smile.

Same expression.

Elena.

Maya looked at the picture.

“Is that Mommy?””

“No,” I whispered.

Then I realized.

“Yes.””

Because she looked like Sophie.

But younger.

And beside her was a teenage girl.

Nia.

I looked at Daniel.

“How is Nia connected to Elena?””

Daniel hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

“Tell me.””

He sighed.

“Elena was Nia’s mother.””

The room went silent.

Maya looked confused.

“Nia’s mom knew Mommy?””

Nia stared at the photograph.

Her face had gone completely pale.

“No.””

Daniel looked at her.

“She never told you?””

Nia shook her head slowly.

“Sophie told me my mother abandoned me.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“She was trying to protect you.””

“From what?””

He didn’t answer.

Nia’s voice became louder.

“From what?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“From knowing the truth.””

The anger on Nia’s face reminded me of myself.

Because we were both realizing the same thing.

Sophie had loved us.

But she had also controlled the truth.

“What happened to Elena?”” I asked.

Daniel looked at me.

“Marcus happened.””

The name filled the room.

Again.

Always Marcus.

“What did he do?””

Daniel took a breath.

“Elena discovered Marcus was laundering money through a charity foundation.””

I looked at the documents.

“She had proof.””

“Yes.””

“And Sophie found out?””

“Yes.””

“Then why hide this from me?””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Because Marcus wasn’t the only person involved.””

My stomach tightened.

“You said that already.””

“I know.””

“Then say the name.””

Daniel looked at me.

For several seconds, he didn’t speak.

Then he said:

“Your company’s chief financial officer.””

I froze.

“What?””

Daniel looked at the folder.

“Your CFO helped move the money.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“You trust him?””

“Yes.””

“Adrian, that’s exactly why Sophie was afraid.””

My mind raced.

My CFO.

A man I had worked with for eight years.

A man who knew every account.

Every investment.

Every weakness.

“How does Daniel Carter know all this?””

Nia asked suddenly.

Everyone looked at her.

She stared at him.

“You keep saying Sophie told you. But why did she trust you?””

That was the question I should have asked from the beginning.

Daniel went quiet.

Too quiet.

I stepped closer.

“Yes.””

He looked at me.

“Why did Sophie trust you?””

His face changed.

And for the first time since I had known him…

Daniel looked afraid.

“Because I wasn’t just your friend.””

My heart stopped.

“What does that mean?””

He reached into his coat pocket.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Then he pulled out a small envelope.

Old.

Folded.

The handwriting on it was unmistakable.

Sophie’s.

My name was written on the front.

Again.

Another letter.

Another secret.

Another piece of a life I thought I understood.

Daniel handed it to me.

“She gave this to me three days before she died.””

I stared at him.

“You had a letter from my wife for three days?””

“Yes.””

“And you never gave it to me?””

“No.””

“Why?””

His eyes filled.

“Because Sophie asked me not to.””

I almost exploded.

“Of course she did.””

I turned away.

Everyone had a reason.

Everyone had an explanation.

Everyone had been protecting me.

Except nobody protected me from the truth.

I opened the letter.

The first sentence was enough to make my hands shake.

Daniel,

If Adrian ever finds out what happened, he will blame himself.

Please make sure he understands one thing.

This was never his fault.

I continued reading.

Then I reached the line that made me stop.

The line that changed the entire mystery.

Daniel is not the person you should fear.

I looked up.

Daniel was watching me.

Nia stepped closer.

“What does it say?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because underneath Sophie’s words was a warning.

A warning that made no sense.

A warning that turned everything upside down.

The next sentence read:

The person who betrayed me is someone Adrian will never suspect.

Someone who has been protecting him since the beginning.

Someone who knows exactly how to make him believe he is safe.

I slowly lowered the letter.

Because suddenly Daniel was not the biggest mystery.

He was the man Sophie trusted enough to carry her final message.

And outside the storage unit, somewhere in the city…

the real person who betrayed my family was still watching.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“What?””

I stepped closer.

“Who is it?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because whoever was calling had sent a message.

He showed me the screen.

Three words.

May you like

Three words that made Nia go completely still.

*SHE FOUND ADRIAN.*
