Chapter 6 - THE VAULT BENEATH THE BARNThe steel door beneath the old barn had been hidden for so long that the hinges protested when the sheriff's men finally forced it open.

I stood behind them with Sarah holding my hand.

Ethan was waiting in the farmhouse with a deputy.

I had refused to let him see what was inside.

He had already seen enough.

The cellar.

Claire.

The rope.

His mother's supposed death.

I didn't want to give him another nightmare.

The door opened.

Cold air rushed out.

One of the deputies raised his flashlight.

“There's a staircase.”

I looked at Sarah.

She squeezed my hand.

“I'm coming with you.”

I nodded.

We descended slowly.

The stairs seemed endless.

At the bottom was a concrete room.

There were shelves along every wall.

Boxes.

Metal filing cabinets.

Old photographs.

And documents stacked carefully inside waterproof containers.

My grandfather had built a secret archive beneath the ranch.

But the most shocking thing wasn't the money.

It was the names.

Every person who had ever been involved with our family business appeared somewhere in those records.

Including Teresa.

Including Claire.

Including Nathan.

And even my father.

I picked up the first folder.

The label read:

BRADLEY FAMILY TRUST — CONFIDENTIAL

My heart began pounding.

I opened it.

Inside was a letter from my grandfather.

Daniel,

If you ever find this room, the family has already begun to destroy itself.

I swallowed.

Sarah moved closer.

I continued reading.

I created this vault because I discovered that someone inside the family was stealing from the company.

The next page contained bank statements.

Millions of dollars had been transferred out of the family accounts.

The transactions had been authorized by a person whose signature I recognized.

My father's.

But beneath his signature was another authorization.

Teresa.

I stared at it.

“She wasn't just stealing my money.”

Sarah looked over my shoulder.

“She was stealing from your father.”

“And my grandfather.”

A deputy picked up another file.

“Sir, you need to see this.”

He handed me a folder.

Inside were surveillance photographs.

Claire meeting Teresa.

Teresa meeting Mason.

Mason meeting Nathan.

And Nathan meeting someone else.

A man whose face had been deliberately scratched out.

“Who is that?” I asked.

The deputy shook his head.

“We'll have to enhance the photograph.”

Then Sarah suddenly gasped.

“Wait.”

She pointed to the man's hand.

He wore a distinctive silver ring.

I recognized it.

My father had owned the exact same ring.

But my father had died seven years earlier.

I looked at Sarah.

“That can't be him.”

She whispered:

“Maybe it isn't.”

We searched the vault for hours.

Eventually, we found another compartment.

Inside was a small wooden box.

My grandfather's handwriting was on the lid.

For Daniel — Only if Sarah survives.

My hands went numb.

I opened it.

Inside was a cassette tape.

A photograph.

And a key.

Sarah stared at the photograph.

It showed her.

Standing beside my father.

But the date was three months before her accident.

“You knew him?”

Sarah shook her head.

“I don't remember this.”

I turned the photograph over.

There was writing on the back.

She knows what happened to Thomas.

Thomas.

The name from the old documents.

The man whose death had been connected to my family's first financial scandal.

I inserted the cassette into an old player.

Static filled the room.

Then my father's voice.

I hadn't heard it in seven years.

“Daniel, if you're listening to this, I failed.”

I closed my eyes.

His voice continued.

“Your mother has been lying to you.”

My breath caught.

“She is not the person you think she is.”

Sarah covered her mouth.

Then my father said something that made my blood run cold.

“Claire knows the truth.”

The tape crackled.

“Claire saw Teresa the night Thomas died.”

The recording stopped.

I stared at the machine.

“That can't be everything.”

The deputy examined the tape.

“There may be another side.”

He flipped it.

More static.

Then my father's voice returned.

“I couldn't expose Teresa because she had proof that I had hidden something from Daniel.”

I froze.

“What?”

My father's voice continued.

“I was not Daniel's biological father.”

Sarah looked at me.

The room seemed to spin.

My father continued:

“Richard is.”

Richard.

The name from my childhood.

My mother's old friend.

The man I had been told left town before I was born.

Then my father said:

“Teresa discovered it.”

The tape stopped.

I stared at Sarah.

“Why would Teresa care?”

Sarah looked toward the documents.

“Because Richard owned part of the family trust.”

I understood.

My entire life had been constructed around a lie.

My father knew.

Teresa knew.

Claire knew.

And my mother had known.

The question was…

Why had everyone kept it from me?

Then Daisy screamed outside.

The sound echoed through the barn.

I ran upstairs.

The horse was standing beside the old pasture gate.

She was staring toward the tree line.

Someone was there.

A figure.

Watching us.

I grabbed a flashlight.

The sheriff raised his weapon.

“Stay back.”

The figure ran.

Officers chased him.

Minutes later, they returned with a torn piece of clothing.

A dark jacket.

Inside the pocket was a photograph.

It showed Ethan.

Standing beside Daisy.

On the back:

The boy must never inherit.

I felt something inside me go cold.

Someone wasn't after the ranch anymore.

They were after my son.

May you like

And whoever it was…

knew exactly what Ethan was going to inherit.
