Chapter 14: What Vanessa Was Paid to Hide

“Evelyn agreed that Lauren would be raised outside this family,” Vanessa read.

“She agreed that Daniel would remain unaware of the child's true parentage until the appropriate time.””

Lauren went pale.

“That's not what happened.””

Vanessa looked up.

“Isn't it?””

“Keep reading,” I said.

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

She lowered the page.

“Your mother made arrangements. I honored them.””

“You stole her identity,” Lauren said.

“You lied about being my mother.””

“I raised you.””

“You controlled me.””

“I fed you. Clothed you. Put you through school.””

“And you used me to steal money.””

Vanessa gave a small, humorless laugh.

“You have no idea what it cost me to keep this family together.””

I stepped closer to the table.

“You weren't keeping the family together. You were keeping the money.””

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

“Your mother was always careless with money. She trusted people who didn't deserve it. She trusted Marcus.

She trusted Richard. She even trusted your father.””

“Where is Marcus?”” Lauren demanded.

For the first time, Vanessa looked uncomfortable.

“He is dead.””

“His death certificate was never verified,” I said.

“We found a photograph of you meeting him outside a storage facility three months ago.””

Vanessa's face went still.

I watched the realization settle behind her eyes.

She knew we had found it.

“Photographs can be misleading,” she said.

“Not when they show your car, your face, and the date.””

Lauren leaned forward.

“Did you tell me my father was dead because you knew he was alive?””

Vanessa snapped the folder shut.

“Your father was a selfish man. He abandoned you.””

“Then why were you meeting him?””

Silence.

Vanessa rose and walked toward the fireplace.

“Marcus wanted money. He always wanted money. He threatened to expose the arrangement with Evelyn unless I paid him.””

“An arrangement you made,” I said.

“An arrangement your mother made!””

Vanessa spun around.

“You think Evelyn was innocent? She was the one who brought Lauren into the world while married to Daniel. She was the one who wanted to hide the truth. She was the one who decided another woman should raise her child.””

Lauren looked toward the folder.

“Mom—”

Vanessa's expression sharpened.

“Don't call me that.””

The words struck harder than a slap.

Lauren swallowed.

“I called you that for twenty-six years.””

“And I gave you everything.””

“You gave me a story.””

Vanessa's voice dropped.

“You were supposed to be grateful.””

I felt Lauren's fingers tighten around mine.

“Why did you do it?”” I asked.

“Why steal from the trust?””

Vanessa stared at me.

“Because I was tired of watching Evelyn get everything. The beautiful house. The devoted husband.

The daughters. The money. Even after she disappeared, everyone still treated her like some tragic angel.””

“You could have left,” I said.

“And live with nothing?””

“You had a husband, a home, and a life.””

“I had a life built on scraps.””

Her mask had finally slipped.

She paced in front of the fireplace, her hands trembling.

“Daniel loved Evelyn. Even when he thought she was dead, he loved her. I spent eight years being second place in my own marriage. And when I discovered the trust, I realized there was finally something I could take that she couldn't protect.””

Lauren stared at her.

“So you stole from my sister.””

“And from you.””

“And you made me sign papers.””

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“You were old enough to sign your own name.””

“You lied about what they were.””

“Because you would have refused.””

“Exactly!””

Lauren's voice broke.

For a moment, I thought she might collapse. Instead, she stood straighter.

“You don't get to call that love.””

Vanessa reached for the folder.

I moved first.

“Don't.””

She froze.

The room fell silent.

Then Vanessa smiled.

“You think you can stop me?””

“I think you know the police are listening.””

Her smile faded.

Vanessa glanced toward the windows.

“You brought police?””

“We brought witnesses,” Lauren said.

Vanessa looked between us.

Then she laughed.

A cold, controlled sound.

“You really think Richard's copies are enough? The original trust is here. The original amendments are here. And the most important page is still missing.””

My stomach tightened.

“What page?””

Vanessa opened the folder again and pulled out a small envelope.

“Your mother's final instruction.””

She slid it across the table.

Lauren opened it.

Inside was a single sheet bearing Evelyn's signature and a date from eight years earlier.

The statement was brief.

It said that if Evelyn failed to return within one year, the trustee was to contact Daniel and disclose the truth about Lauren's birth.

But beneath that instruction was another paragraph.

It named a second person authorized to take control of the trust if Evelyn could not be found.

Marcus Hale.

Lauren looked up.

“Why is his name here?””

Vanessa's face changed.

“Because he was supposed to stay dead.””

Before I could respond, a voice came from the hallway.

“That's enough, Vanessa.””

A man stepped into the living room.

He was older than the photograph, thinner, with gray at his temples and a faint scar running along his jaw.

Lauren stopped breathing.

The man looked directly at her.

“Hello, sweetheart.””

Her lips parted.

“Dad?””

Vanessa stumbled backward.

Marcus Hale was alive.

And he was holding a second copy of the original trust.

“I believe,” Marcus said quietly, “we have some things to correct.””

Vanessa stared at him as if she were looking at a ghost.

“You were supposed to disappear.””

“I did.””

“You were supposed to stay away.””

“I tried.””

Marcus placed the folder on the table.

“But when you threatened my daughter, I decided I'd been gone long enough.””

Lauren took one uncertain step toward him.

“Why didn't you come for me?””

His face crumpled.

“Because I was afraid that if I came back, you would be the next person they made disappear.””

“Who?””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“Her. And the doctor who just got arrested.””

Vanessa backed toward the doorway.

“You can't prove anything.””

Marcus opened the folder.

“I kept every letter, every bank transfer, and every recording you sent me.””

Vanessa lunged for the documents.

But before she reached them, two officers entered from the hallway.

“Vanessa Whitmore,” Detective Harris said, “step away from the table.””

She stopped.

Her eyes moved to the folder, then to Marcus, then to Lauren.

For the first time since I had known her, Vanessa looked genuinely afraid.

But as the officers approached, she turned toward me.

“You have no idea what your mother did to get you both.””

I stared at her.

“Then we'll hear it from her.””

Vanessa's face twisted.

“You think she can explain everything?””

“I think she deserves the chance.””

The officers took Vanessa's arms.

She didn't resist.

Instead, she leaned toward Lauren and whispered something I couldn't hear.

Lauren went white.

“What did she say?”” I asked after the officers led Vanessa away.

Lauren stared at the open folder.

“She said my father didn't come back because he wanted to save me.””

Marcus lowered his eyes.

Lauren turned to him.

“She said you came back because you wanted the money.””

May you like

Marcus didn't deny it immediately.

And that silence hurt more than anything Vanessa had said.
