Chapter 6: The Evidence He Left Behind
Julian appeared at the top of the stairs.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
The man who had thrown me out days earlier now looked like he was the one who had been caught.
Interesting.
Very interesting.
“What are you doing here?”” he asked.
I looked at him.
“I could ask you the same thing.””
His eyes moved around the room.
Not toward me.
Toward Leo’s things.
Toward the places where secrets could be found.
That told me everything.
“You went through his room,” I said.
His expression changed.
“No.””
The answer came too quickly.
A lie.
I knew Julian’s lies.
I had lived with them.
“You’re looking for something.””
He crossed his arms.
“You’re being paranoid.””
I almost smiled.
That was his favorite word.
Paranoid.
Crazy.
Emotional.
Any word that made me question myself.
But I was done questioning myself.
“What did you think you would find?””
His face hardened.
“Clara.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You asked about the house before Leo died.””
Silence.
“You knew it belonged to me.””
Nothing.
“You tried to push me out before I could figure out why.””
Still nothing.
Then he said:
“You don’t understand.””
I shook my head.
“No. I’m starting to.””
His eyes narrowed.
“You think this is about the house?””
“Isn’t it?””
He looked away.
That scared me more than anger would have.
Because Julian always looked away when he knew he was losing control.
“What happened, Julian?””
He didn’t answer.
“What were you planning?””
His jaw tightened.
“You need to stop digging.””
There it was.
Not denial.
Not confusion.
A warning.
I felt my fear rise, but I pushed it down.
“You’re threatening me?””
“No.””
“You’re sure?””
He stepped closer.
“I’m telling you that you don’t know what you’re dealing with.””
I held his gaze.
“Then explain it.””
He said nothing.
Because explanations require truth.
And Julian had spent too long hiding his.
I reached into my pocket.
Not for the note.
Not yet.
I wanted to see what he would do without knowing what I had.
“You came back here looking for something.””
His face remained still.
“You’re wrong.””
“No, I’m not.””
I pointed toward Leo’s room.
“You came into your dead son’s room looking for something.””
His expression changed.
A flicker.
Pain.
Then anger.
“Don’t use Leo against me.””
The words made my chest tighten.
“I’m not using him.””
My voice cracked.
“I’m protecting what he left behind.””
For the first time, Julian looked almost ashamed.
Almost.
Then his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
And his entire expression changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
He answered.
“What?””
A pause.
“No. That’s not possible.””
I watched him carefully.
His face became pale.
“I told you I was handling it.””
Another pause.
Then:
“She knows?””
My heart stopped.
Julian looked at me.
And suddenly, I knew the call was about me.
He ended the call quickly.
“Who was that?”” I asked.
“No one.””
I laughed softly.
“Another lie.””
He walked past me.
“You need to leave.””
I didn’t move.
“This is my house.””
He stopped.
Those four words bothered him more than anything else I had said.
Because they reminded him.
He was standing inside something he had never owned.
I watched him walk downstairs.
Then I looked around Leo’s room again.
My son had left me a lifetime of memories.
But somehow, hidden among them, he had also left me a clue.
And Julian had been afraid I would find it.
I waited until he left.
Then I returned to the wooden box.
I pulled out the note again.
I read it slowly.
“Need to find out what Clara knows about the property before moving forward.””
The words were clear.
The handwriting was Julian’s.
But something bothered me.
The note was dated six months ago.
The same time he started asking questions.
The same time Leo got sick.
The same time Julian started becoming distant.
I folded the note carefully.
Then I noticed something underneath the box.
A small envelope.
Not mine.
Not Julian’s.
Leo’s name was written on it.
My hands shook as I picked it up.
Because whoever left it there wanted me to find it.
And they wanted me to find it after Leo was gone.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a single sentence.
A sentence that changed the entire story.
“Mommy, Daddy is hiding something from you.””
I stared at the words until my eyes filled with tears.
Because suddenly, I understood something terrifying.
My son had known.
May you like
And before he left this world…
He had tried to warn me.
