Chapter 11: My Mother's Last Lie

The hospital was nearly empty when we arrived.

Rain tapped against the windows of the emergency entrance. A security guard stood beside the reception desk, and the smell of disinfectant hung in the air.

My mother was waiting near the elevators.

She looked nothing like the woman who had sat confidently at the dining room table three weeks earlier.

Her hair was loose. Her eyes were swollen, and her hands shook as she held a paper cup.

When she saw me, she stood.

“Sienna.””

“Where's Robert?””

“Upstairs.””

“Why?””

“He said he needed to speak to me privately.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Eleanor, did he tell you why he wanted you here?””

She shook her head.

“He said he had evidence about Richard's death.””

I studied her face.

“Did he tell you who killed Dad?””

She looked away.

“No.””

“Mom, stop lying to me.””

Her lips trembled.

“I am not lying.””

“Then tell me why you signed the Harbor Ridge documents.””

She stared at the floor.

“I thought I was saving the company.””

“You owned fifty-one percent.””

“I didn't understand what I was signing.””

“You understood enough to sign a seven-million-dollar loan against the family property.””

She flinched.

Daniel spoke carefully.

“Eleanor, did Robert explain where the money went?””

“He said it was being held for the restructuring.””

“By whom?””

She closed her eyes.

“I don't know.””

I stepped closer.

“You've been married to him for four months. You knew him before that. You helped him take money from Dad's company. And now you expect me to believe you know nothing?””

Her eyes filled.

“I loved Robert.””

I stared at her.

“Did you love Dad?””

She looked as though I had struck her.

“Of course I loved Richard.””

“Then why did you help the man who was destroying him?””

She covered her face.

For a moment, I thought she might finally tell us everything.

Instead, she whispered:

“Because Richard was going to leave me.””

The words stopped me.

“What?””

“He had discovered something. He said he wanted to change the will, separate our finances, and make sure I couldn't touch the company.””

“Because you were helping Robert.””

“No. Before that.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What had Richard discovered?””

She shook her head.

“I can't.””

I took her hands.

“Mom, Dad is gone. Whatever happened, you cannot protect him by hiding it anymore.””

She looked at me.

Then she spoke.

“Robert told me that Thomas Haines was alive.””

I went still.

“When?””

“Did you meet him?””

She nodded.

“Once. At a hotel outside Philadelphia.””

Daniel immediately took out his phone.

“What did Thomas want?””

“He wanted money. He said Richard had taken everything from him.””

“Was that true?””

“I don't know. Robert said Thomas was dangerous. He said if Richard found out Thomas was alive, he would lose the company.””

I looked at her.

“So Robert used that secret to convince you to sign the transfer documents.””

She nodded.

“He said the Haines family would destroy us unless we cooperated.””

“And you believed him?””

“I was afraid.””

I pulled my hands away.

“You were afraid of losing your house, so you helped him take Dad's company?””

She began crying.

“I didn't know he would hurt Richard.””

I felt the words settle heavily between us.

“Did Robert hurt him?””

She looked toward the elevator.

“I don't know.””

Then a voice came from behind us.

“I think we should ask him.””

Robert stood near the corridor entrance.

He wore a charcoal suit and carried a leather folder.

Two security officers stood behind him.

My mother immediately stepped away.

“Robert, you said you were going to explain.””

“I am.””

Daniel moved between us.

“Before you say anything, understand that Detective Reed has been informed of this meeting.””

Robert smiled.

“Of course he has.””

He opened the folder and removed several documents.

“Richard wasn't the innocent businessman you all believe he was.””

I stared at him.

“Get to the point.””

Robert placed a photograph on the counter.

It showed my father standing beside Thomas Haines outside the old warehouse.

The date was visible.

September 1998.

Three days before the fire.

Robert pointed toward the photograph.

“Your father and Thomas had an argument over a missing shipment. A container carrying expensive electronics disappeared. Thomas accused Richard of stealing it.””

“Was he?””

Robert shrugged.

“According to the records, yes.””

Daniel examined the photograph.

“Where did you obtain this?””

“From Thomas.””

Robert removed another document.

It was an old police report.

A statement from a former warehouse employee claimed that Richard had ordered the container moved before the fire.

I read the final page.

The employee's name was listed as witness.

*Martin Caldwell.*

I looked up.

“Martin Caldwell?””

Robert smiled.

“The same lawyer who sat at your dining room table.””

My blood ran cold.

The senior lawyer who had presented the surrender agreement had been connected to the original warehouse investigation.

Daniel took the report.

“That's not possible. Caldwell was a junior clerk at the time.””

“Then perhaps he knows more than you think.””

I turned toward Robert.

“Why are you showing me this?””

“Because your father wasn't killed over four million dollars.””

Robert placed one final photograph on the counter.

It showed my father entering a private clinic on the evening of his collapse.

The timestamp was 8:42 p.m.

He was accompanied by a woman.

I recognized her.

My mother.

But the photograph revealed something else.

She was holding a small medical bag.

I looked at her.

“What's that?””

My mother began shaking her head.

“No.””

Robert spoke quietly.

“Ask her what she put in your father's medication.””

The corridor seemed to tilt.

I turned toward my mother.

“Mom?””

She took a step backward.

“I didn't know.””

Robert laughed.

“Of course you knew.””

My mother covered her mouth.

“I thought it was his prescribed medicine. Robert said it would calm him down.””

“What did you give him?””

She looked at me through tears.

“I don't know.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Eleanor, did you administer any medication to Richard that night?””

She nodded weakly.

“Robert said the doctor had changed his prescription.””

Robert's expression hardened.

“Be careful what you say.””

She turned toward him.

“You told me it was safe!””

For the first time, Robert looked genuinely angry.

He grabbed her arm.

“Shut up.””

I moved immediately.

“Take your hand off her.””

One of the security officers stepped between us.

Daniel raised his voice.

“Detective Reed is on his way.””

Robert released my mother.

Then he looked at me.

“You want the truth, Sienna? Your father was going to destroy everyone. He was going to expose Thomas, Eleanor, Julian, and me. He left me no choice.””

I stared at him.

“What did you do?””

He leaned closer.

“I made sure he couldn't sign another document.””

The words hung in the corridor.

Then the elevator doors opened.

Detective Reed stepped out with two officers.

“Robert Sterling, step away from everyone.””

Robert smiled faintly.

“Gladly.””

But as the officers approached, he looked directly at me.

“You still don't understand. I wasn't the person who gave Richard the medication.””

He pointed at my mother.

“She was.””

My mother screamed.

May you like

And just before the officers restrained him, Robert added:

“Ask her what happened to the original prescription bottle.””
