Chapter 6: The Truth My Father Buried

The sentence didn’t make sense.

Not at first.

My mind rejected it before I could even understand it.

*You are the reason he disappeared.*

The words hung in the air.

Everyone heard them.

Everyone reacted differently.

Richard looked horrified.

Daniel looked broken.

Claire looked confused.

And Elena Cross looked like someone who had finally placed the last piece of a puzzle on the table.

I stared at her.

“No.””

It was the only word I could find.

Elena didn’t move.

“Maya—”

“No.””

My voice grew louder.

“You don’t get to walk in here after fifteen years of working beside my father’s enemies and tell me I’m the reason he left.””

Her expression remained calm.

“That’s not what I said.””

“That’s exactly what you said.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Elena, enough.””

She looked at him.

“Still protecting her?””

My father’s face changed.

Not anger.

Pain.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

Elena gave a small, sad smile.

“I know exactly what I’m talking about.””

She placed the folder on the table.

“The question is whether you’re finally ready to admit it.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Admit what?””

He didn’t answer.

That silence hurt more than anything Elena had said.

Because my father had always been the one person I believed would never hide something from me.

But he was hiding something.

Seven years ago, he didn’t just disappear.

He left behind a version of himself I never knew.

I turned toward him.

“Dad.””

His eyes met mine.

“Tell me she’s lying.””

The room waited.

Daniel opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

And that was the moment everything changed.

Because my father had survived seven years of hiding.

He had survived people hunting him.

He had survived losing his company.

But he couldn’t lie to me.

Not anymore.

“I never wanted you involved.””

My heart sank.

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

He looked down.

“It isn’t.””

I stepped back.

“Everyone keeps saying they wanted to protect me.””

My voice shook.

“But nobody ever asks what happens when you’re protected from the truth for so long that you don’t even know who you are.””

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Elena.

“Explain.””

She opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Not company records.

Personal records.

My name appeared on the first page.

My hands went cold.

“What is this?””

Elena pushed the document toward me.

“Your inheritance.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

Elena looked at him.

“You should have told her.””

“What inheritance?””

I picked up the paper.

My eyes moved across the page.

And slowly, the truth began forming.

Years ago, before Whitmore Global became what it was, my father had created a private ownership agreement.

A trust.

A legal structure that protected company shares.

But the beneficiary wasn’t Richard.

It wasn’t the board.

It wasn’t another executive.

It was me.

My name was there.

Maya Reed.

I looked at my father.

“You put the company in my name?””

“No.””

His answer came quickly.

“Not exactly.””

“Then what?””

He sighed.

“The company was never supposed to belong to one person.””

He looked at the document.

“It was supposed to belong to the people who built it.””

Elena laughed quietly.

“And that was always Daniel’s weakness.””

Everyone looked at her.

“He believed fairness could survive in a world built on greed.””

Richard’s expression hardened.

“You were part of that world.””

“Yes.””

She didn’t deny it.

“I was.””

The honesty was unsettling.

Elena sat down.

“Fifteen years ago, Daniel discovered that some board members were using the company to enrich themselves.””

Richard nodded.

“Arthur.””

“And others.””

Elena looked at him.

“Don’t pretend Arthur acted alone.””

The room went quiet.

Claire looked at her.

“Then why are you helping us?””

Elena turned toward her.

“I’m not.””

The answer shocked everyone.

She looked back at me.

“I’m helping Maya.””

I stared.

“Why?””

“Because your father made one mistake.””

“What?””

“He thought hiding you would keep you safe.””

Elena looked at Daniel.

“But hiding someone doesn’t protect them forever.””

She opened another document.

“This is what happened seven years ago.””

My breathing slowed.

Finally.

The truth.

“The night Daniel disappeared, he discovered the final piece of evidence against Arthur.””

She tapped the page.

“But before he could release it, someone accessed the archive room.””

I looked at the photograph.

Claire.

Elena continued.

“Claire was there.””

Claire immediately spoke.

“I already told you. I wasn’t working with them.””

Elena nodded.

“I know.””

Everyone looked at her.

“You know?””

Claire looked confused.

Elena turned toward me.

“She was there because she was trying to find the same evidence.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

Claire looked away.

And for the first time, I saw something different.

Not arrogance.

Regret.

“My father was destroying the company.””

Her voice was quiet.

“I knew.””

Richard stared at her.

“Claire.””

“I knew the numbers didn’t make sense.””

She swallowed.

“I knew people were getting fired because of decisions that weren’t real.””

Nobody interrupted.

“I thought I could fix it.””

She laughed bitterly.

“Imagine that.””

She looked at me.

“I thought because I was his daughter, I could walk into his office and stop him.””

“And?””

Her eyes lowered.

“And I found Daniel’s files.””

The room went silent.

“That night?””

Claire nodded.

“Yes.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””

She looked at him.

“Because I saw what happened when people challenged my father.””

The answer was simple.

And terrifying.

She wasn’t innocent.

But she wasn’t the villain I thought she was.

Not completely.

Elena continued.

“The problem was Claire wasn’t the only person in that archive room.””

She looked at me.

“Someone else arrived.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

Elena reached into the folder.

She pulled out a security image.

A different one.

Not Claire.

Not Arthur.

Someone else.

The person standing behind them.

I stared at the photograph.

Because I knew that person too.

Everyone did.

Richard whispered:

“No.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“It was you.””

I looked at Richard.

The CEO.

The man who had spent years pretending he was protecting my father.

The man who had looked afraid when Daniel returned.

The man who had hidden the letter.

The man standing between me and the truth.

Richard Whitmore.

He shook his head.

“No.””

Daniel’s voice was quiet.

“You were there.””

“I was trying to help.””

“Then why did you erase the security footage?””

Richard looked away.

Nobody moved.

The truth was finally coming out.

Slowly.

Painfully.

But it was coming.

I turned to Richard.

“You knew.””

His eyes met mine.

“Maya…”

“You knew my father was alive.””

“Yes.””

“You knew about the trust.””

“Yes.””

“You knew I was investigating the merger.””

A pause.

“Yes.””

The word felt like a knife.

“Then why?””

Richard looked older than he had minutes ago.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

He looked at Daniel.

Then at me.

“Of the person who made your father disappear.””

My heart raced.

“Who?””

Richard didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked at Elena.

And Elena’s expression changed.

Because she knew.

Richard whispered:

“The person who has been controlling this company from the shadows.””

A notification suddenly appeared on the conference room screen.

An email.

Everyone looked up.

The sender’s name appeared.

My blood turned cold.

Because it was someone none of us had considered.

Someone who had been watching.

Waiting.

The subject line read:

*You finally found the truth.*

May you like

And beneath it:

*Now find out what Maya Reed really is.*
