Chapter 5: The Heir
The word hung in the air.
Camille stared at Adrian.
“Me?””
Adrian nodded.
Victor stepped forward.
“Camille, don't listen to him.””
She turned on her father.
“Then tell me he's lying.””
Victor opened his mouth.
Nothing came.
“That’s what I thought.””
She looked back at Adrian.
“You said I was the heir.””
“I said the document names you.””
“Why?””
“Because your grandfather changed the ownership structure before he died.””
Victor's voice was barely audible.
“He changed it without telling me.””
Adrian looked at him.
“He changed it because he didn't trust you.””
Camille's face tightened.
“You keep saying my father betrayed you.””
“He did.””
“Then why save the company?””
Adrian studied her.
“Because the company isn't your father.””
She frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“It means a business can survive a dishonest owner.””
Victor stepped closer.
“My daughter doesn't need to hear this.””
Camille spun toward him.
“She needs to hear everything.””
Victor stared at her.
“Camille…”
“No more secrets.””
Her voice cracked.
“No more stories about Grandpa building everything. No more pretending the company was handed to you clean. No more telling me I was being trained to inherit something that wasn't even yours.””
Victor looked devastated.
Adrian remained silent.
Camille turned toward Monica.
“Did you know?””
Monica shook her head immediately.
“No.””
“Not about the debt?””
“No.””
“The ownership?””
“No.””
“Any of it?””
Monica's eyes filled with tears.
“I swear.””
Camille believed her.
That somehow made everything worse.
She looked down at the contract.
“Then why would you come here yourself?””
Adrian answered.
“Because your father planned to sign this tonight.””
Victor stiffened.
“That isn't true.””
Adrian pointed to the final page.
“Your signature block is dated today.””
Camille looked.
It was.
The execution time had already been entered.
8:00 p.m.
She checked the store clock.
7:43 p.m.
“You were going to sign in seventeen minutes?””
Victor said nothing.
Camille stared at him.
“Dad.””
Victor rubbed his forehead.
“I was going to fix it.””
“How?””
“I had a plan.””
“Selling the company?””
“Protecting it.””
“You were transferring control.””
“To someone who could keep it alive.””
Adrian laughed softly.
Victor glared at him.
“You think this is funny?””
“No.””
Adrian's voice became colder.
“I think it's familiar.””
Victor took a step forward.
“You left me with nothing.””
Adrian's eyes hardened.
“I left you with a company worth three million dollars.””
“And you walked away.””
“Because you told me you'd protect our partnership.””
“I did.””
“You forged my exit.””
Victor went silent.
Camille looked at him.
“You forged his signature?””
Victor's face changed.
“That wasn't how it happened.””
Adrian reached into the folder and pulled out another document.
“Look at the signature.””
Camille did.
Then she looked at the photograph.
Then back at the document.
The signatures were nearly identical.
But not quite.
Her grandfather's signature was firm and angular.
Victor's was smooth.
Adrian's had a distinctive upward hook at the end.
The signature on the exit document had none of it.
Camille whispered, “It isn't his.””
Victor looked down.
“No.””
Adrian said, “It wasn't.””
“Then why didn't you sue?””
“I did.””
“When?””
“Twenty-four years ago.””
Camille looked stunned.
“What happened?””
Adrian glanced at Victor.
“Your grandfather settled it.””
Victor's voice was bitter.
“He paid you.””
“No.””
Adrian shook his head.
“He offered me a settlement.””
Camille waited.
“I refused.””
“Why?””
“Because I didn't want money.””
Adrian's eyes moved around the store.
“I wanted the truth.””
Victor laughed bitterly.
“And now?””
“Now I want control.””
Camille looked at him.
“Control of what?””
“The company.””
“You want to take everything from my family.””
“No.””
Adrian paused.
“I want to take back what was stolen.””
Victor stepped between them.
“You're using my daughter.””
Adrian looked directly at Camille.
“No.””
Then he said quietly:
“I'm giving her a choice.””
Camille's heart pounded.
“What choice?””
Adrian turned the contract toward her.
“Sign this, and the acquisition goes through.””
She looked at the signature line.
“Or?””
“Refuse, and your father's voting rights disappear.””
Victor immediately said, “Don't sign anything.””
Camille looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because he wants the company.””
Adrian interrupted.
“No.””
Victor glared.
“He wants you to believe you're the rightful owner.””
Adrian shook his head.
“I don't need her to believe anything.””
He tapped the document.
“The legal records already recognize her.””
Camille stared at the page.
“What happens if I refuse?””
“Your father loses control.””
“And if I sign?””
“Your father loses control.””
She looked at him in disbelief.
“Then what's the difference?””
Adrian's eyes softened.
“You decide who gets the company.””
Victor's voice rose.
“You can't put that on her!””
“You put it on her years ago.””
Camille looked at her father.
Victor suddenly looked old.
Not powerful.
Not wealthy.
Just tired.
“Dad,” she whispered, “what are you afraid she'll find?””
Victor didn't answer.
Adrian did.
“The warehouse.””
Camille turned.
“What happened there?””
Victor backed away.
“Nothing.””
Adrian opened the folder.
“The original records are inside.””
Camille's stomach tightened.
“Original records of what?””
Adrian's phone buzzed.
He looked at it.
A new message appeared.
He read it once.
Then his expression changed.
Camille noticed.
“What?””
Adrian locked the screen.
“We have a problem.””
Victor immediately asked, “What happened?””
Adrian looked toward the glass doors.
“Someone just accessed the company's private archive.””
Monica whispered, “Who?””
Adrian's eyes shifted toward Camille.
“Someone using your credentials.””
Camille shook her head.
“That’s impossible.””
“Is it?””
She reached for her phone.
Her banking and corporate apps were open.
Then another notification appeared.
*ARCHIVE ACCESS CONFIRMED — CAMILLE VICTORIAN.*
Her blood ran cold.
“I didn't do that.””
Adrian took one step toward her.
“I know.””
“Then who did?””
The store doors suddenly locked.
Every security light turned red.
And from somewhere behind the counter came the sound of a printer starting by itself.
A single sheet slid out.
Monica picked it up.
Her hands began to shake.
“What is it?”” Camille asked.
Monica looked at Victor.
Then at Adrian.

Then she whispered:
“It’s a death certificate.””
