Chapter 4: My Brother's Warning
I stared at the photograph until the faces began to blur.
Michael stood beneath a streetlight outside a parking garage, wearing the navy coat I had bought him for his thirtieth birthday. Beside him was Leonard Pike, the man who had allegedly helped steal millions of dollars from charities supported by my foundation.
Leonard was holding a brown envelope.
Michael was holding a gun.
Not pointing it at anyone. Not even gripping it particularly tightly. But it was unmistakably a firearm, tucked against his thigh beneath the edge of his coat.
My younger brother had spent his childhood terrified of guns.
When we were boys, our father once brought home a hunting rifle. Michael refused to enter the living room until Dad locked it away. He was twelve then, small for his age, with a habit of hiding behind me whenever strangers raised their voices.
Now he was standing beside a suspected financial criminal, armed and apparently involved in a scheme targeting my foundation.
"Find out where that photograph was taken," I told Daniel.
He studied the image.
"The metadata was stripped before it reached your phone. We're checking nearby surveillance feeds.""
"Call Michael.""
"I already tried. The number is active, but he's not answering.""
I looked at the message again.
Don't trust anyone at the gala.
"Does he explain why?""
"No, sir.""
Behind us, the orchestra had stopped playing. Guests were leaving in small groups, whispering as they passed. Victor Reed was speaking urgently with a man in a dark suit near the ballroom doors, while Vanessa sat alone at a table, staring at her untouched champagne.
I turned toward her.
"Vanessa.""
She looked up sharply.
"Where is Michael?""
Her face changed.
It was subtle. A slight widening of the eyes. A pause that lasted half a second too long.
But I saw it.
"You've seen him?"" she asked.
"Answer my question.""
She glanced at Victor.
He immediately stopped talking.
"I haven't seen Michael in months," she said.
"That's interesting. You recognized his name before I showed you the photograph.""
"I didn't recognize anything.""
"Then why did you ask whether I'd seen him?""
She opened her mouth, then closed it.
I pulled out my phone and showed her the image.
Her face drained of color.
"Oh, my God.""
"You know him.""
"Of course I know him. He's your brother.""
"You know something about this photograph.""
She looked at the image again.
Then she whispered, "James, you need to leave.""
"Why?""
"Because Michael isn't working with Leonard.""
I waited.
She pressed her fingers against her forehead.
"He's trying to stop him.""
"By carrying a gun?""
"I don't know why he has that.""
"Then explain what you do know.""
Vanessa looked toward the ballroom entrance. Victor was watching us now, his expression unreadable.
Finally, she leaned closer.
"Three weeks ago, Michael contacted me. He said someone was using your company's accounts to move money through charitable organizations. He wanted information about Victor's business.""
"Why didn't he contact me?""
"He said he couldn't trust anyone inside your company.""
The words landed harder than I expected.
Michael had been my closest family for most of our lives. After our parents died, I had paid his college tuition, helped him start a small consulting business, and given him a position overseeing vendor compliance at one of my automotive companies.
He had left that position eighteen months earlier, claiming he wanted independence.
I had been hurt, but I respected his decision.
Now I wondered whether he had left because he had discovered something.
"Why did you help him?"" I asked.
"Because he said people were stealing from your foundation.""
"And you decided to steal from it, too?""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I made a terrible mistake.""
"That doesn't answer the question.""
She looked down.
"Leonard approached me first. He said Victor was in financial trouble and needed temporary help. I believed him when he said the money would be returned.""
"And Michael?""
"He contacted me afterward. He wanted me to get him access to Victor's records.""
"So you were working with both of them.""
"Not exactly.""
"Vanessa, you have seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars you can't explain, and your name is on a forged declaration. You don't get to hide behind 'not exactly.''"
She flinched.
For several seconds, all I could hear was the low murmur of guests leaving.
Then she reached into her purse and removed a folded piece of paper.
"I kept this because I was afraid.""
She handed it to me.
It was a printed email from Leonard Pike, dated twelve days earlier.
The subject line read: *FINAL TRANSFER INSTRUCTIONS.*
The email contained a list of accounts, transaction amounts, and a deadline. At the bottom was a sentence that made my stomach tighten.
Once Carter's authorization is secured, the remaining funds will be transferred through the family holding company.
I read it twice.
"What family holding company?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"I don't know. Leonard said the name would make sense once everything was complete.""
I looked at Daniel.
"Search every holding company associated with my family.""
He nodded and stepped away to make the call.
Vanessa caught my sleeve.
"James, please. I know you hate me, but I never wanted this to happen.""
I looked at her hand until she released it.
"Hating you would require me to spend time thinking about you.""
Her face crumpled.
For an instant, I regretted the cruelty of the words. Not because they were untrue, but because they came from a part of me I thought I had buried years ago.
I walked away before she could answer.
Near the entrance, Victor was waiting.
"Mr. Carter," he said, forcing a smile, "I think we should speak.""
"About what?""
"Michael.""
I stopped.
Victor glanced toward Vanessa, then lowered his voice.
"Your brother approached me six months ago. He claimed he had evidence of financial misconduct inside your company.""
"Did you?""
"No. I assumed he was trying to extort me.""
"Did he ask you for money?""
Victor hesitated.
"Yes.""
"How much?""
"Five million dollars.""
I studied him.
"And you didn't report it?""
"I intended to. Then I discovered he had access to confidential information about several of my projects. I needed time to understand what he was doing.""
"You mean you were afraid he'd expose you.""
His jaw tightened.
"I mean I had no idea how far this went.""
"Where is he?""
"I don't know.""
"You're lying.""
Victor looked toward the doors.
Then he said something that made me reconsider every assumption I had made that night.
"Michael wasn't trying to extort me, James. He was trying to buy something.""
"What?""
Victor swallowed.
"The original ledger. The one that records every transfer made through your foundation, including the money that was stolen before you started your investigation.""
I stared at him.
"Who has it?""
Victor leaned closer.
"Your brother does.""
Before I could respond, Daniel returned.
"Sir, we located a security camera near the garage in the photograph.""
"And?""
He handed me his phone.
The footage showed Michael leaving a black SUV, walking toward Leonard, and handing him a small device.
Then Leonard passed Michael the brown envelope.
Michael opened it, checked the contents, and stepped back.
The next moment, a second vehicle pulled into the frame.
A woman emerged from the passenger side.
Even through the grainy footage, I recognized her.
My former chief financial officer.
*Evelyn Shaw.*
The woman who had managed my company's accounts for eleven years before resigning unexpectedly four months earlier.
The woman who had personally approved the foundation's first major investment.
And the woman who had once told me, over dinner, that Michael was the only person in the world she trusted more than me.
Daniel paused the footage.
"Mr. Carter, Evelyn Shaw has been missing for six days.""
I looked at the screen.
Michael handed her the envelope.
Evelyn handed him something in return.
A flash drive.
Then she pointed toward the camera.
Not at the lens.
At the exact spot where someone would stand to watch the footage.
She knew she was being recorded.
May you like
And before the image disappeared, she mouthed three words.
*"He's already inside.""*
