Chapter 6: The Night Everyone Chose a Side

The second gunshot came before anyone had time to think.

Glass shattered somewhere near the front entrance.

Noah screamed.

The sound cut through the darkness like a blade.

I moved before I even realized I was moving.

I grabbed him and pulled him down behind the heavy wooden table.

“Stay here.””

His hands were shaking.

“Are they coming for me?””

I looked at him.

For a moment, I saw Rachel.

The same fear.

The same eyes.

The same impossible burden placed on someone who never should have carried it.

“No one is taking you.””

I meant every word.

Outside, engines roared.

More than one.

A lot more.

The old clubhouse walls shook as motorcycles surrounded the building.

Not ours.

Different engines.

Different sound.

Different purpose.

Marcus burst through the side door with three other members.

“Bear!””

I looked up.

“What happened?””

“Five trucks just pulled in.””

His eyes moved to Vincent.

Then Caleb.

Then Noah.

He understood immediately.

“They found us.””

Vincent nodded.

“Yes.””

Marcus looked at me.

“Who are they?””

I didn’t answer.

Because the truth was worse than not knowing.

They weren’t here for the club.

They weren’t here for revenge.

They were here for a child.

A child who had spent his whole life running from people he didn’t even understand.

The lights flickered back on.

Everyone froze.

A voice came from outside.

“Bear!””

The voice echoed through the walls.

I knew it.

Not personally.

But I knew the type.

The type of voice that believed the world belonged to them.

“Come outside.””

Marcus looked at me.

“Who is that?””

Vincent answered.

“Someone who should never have found us.””

I looked at him.

“Name.””

Vincent hesitated.

Then said it.

“Richard Vale.””

The room changed.

Even Marcus reacted.

“Vale?””

I looked between them.

“Who is he?””

Caleb gave a humorless laugh.

“The man who owns half this city.””

Vincent corrected him.

“The man who thinks he owns everything.””

Another impact hit the front door.

Not enough to break it.

A warning.

They could have entered.

They wanted us to know they were waiting.

I looked at Noah.

Then at the men around me.

For thirty years, I had protected this club.

Protected our name.

Protected our people.

But this was different.

This wasn’t a fight over territory.

This wasn’t pride.

This was a boy who had already lost too much.

I turned to Marcus.

“Get Noah out.””

Marcus nodded.

Vincent immediately stepped forward.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

I narrowed my eyes.

“You don’t give orders here.””

“I know.””

He looked at Noah.

“But there’s something you need to understand.””

“What?””

“Vale doesn’t just want Noah.””

Silence.

“He wants what Rachel left behind.””

My mind went back to the letter.

The evidence.

The thing she hid.

The proof.

“What did she leave?””

Vincent looked at Caleb.

Then at me.

“I don’t know.””

That answer bothered me.

“You helped her escape.””

“Yes.””

“You were protecting her.””

“Yes.””

“And you don’t know what she had?””

Vincent’s face hardened.

“She never trusted anyone with everything.””

I almost smiled.

That sounded like Rachel.

Smart.

Careful.

Always three steps ahead.

The front door shook again.

Richard Vale’s voice came through.

“Bear, I know you’re in there.””

Nobody moved.

“I also know the boy is with you.””

Noah looked terrified.

I stepped closer to the door.

“Who are you?””

A laugh came from outside.

A calm laugh.

The kind of laugh that made you understand a person had never been told no.

“You know exactly who I am.””

I didn’t.

Not really.

But I knew men like him.

Men who never touched the dirt.

Men who paid others to get their hands dirty.

Men who smiled while ruining lives.

Vale continued.

“You’ve spent twelve years mourning a woman who betrayed you.””

My jaw tightened.

“She didn’t.””

A pause.

Then laughter.

“Good.””

His voice changed.

“Because that means you finally understand.””

I looked at Vincent.

He looked away.

That bothered me.

“Understand what?””

“That Rachel was smarter than all of you.””

The room went silent.

“She knew the truth.””

Vale continued.

“She knew what would happen if she exposed it.””

I stepped closer to the door.

“You killed her.””

The silence afterward was colder than anything.

Then Vale answered.

“No.””

A pause.

“I made sure she couldn’t come back.””

My hands curled into fists.

Marcus moved beside me.

“Bear.””

I ignored him.

“Where is she?””

Vale didn’t answer.

Instead, he said:

“You really don’t know?””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“You think she’s dead?””

Nobody spoke.

Noah looked at me.

Vincent closed his eyes.

Caleb looked down.

And suddenly I understood.

They all knew something I didn’t.

I turned.

“What aren’t you telling me?””

No one answered.

I looked at Vincent.

“You said she died protecting him.””

Vincent’s face tightened.

“I said she died.””

The room froze.

“But I didn’t say when.””

My blood ran cold.

“What does that mean?””

Before Vincent could answer, a loud crash came from the back of the clubhouse.

Everyone turned.

The back window exploded inward.

A man in black climbed through.

Then another.

Then another.

Chaos exploded.

My instincts took over.

I grabbed the nearest attacker and slammed him against the wall.

The fight was fast.

Violent.

Messy.

But different from the fights I knew.

These men weren’t trying to win.

They were trying to reach Noah.

That was all.

One moved toward the table.

I got there before he did.

I pushed him back.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“You have no idea what you’re protecting.””

I hit him.

Hard.

He dropped.

Marcus and the others fought beside me.

For the first time in years, the club wasn’t fighting for itself.

It was fighting for someone who wasn’t even part of it.

Noah.

Then suddenly, everything stopped.

A gun clicked.

Behind me.

I froze.

A voice whispered:

“Enough.””

I knew that voice.

Everyone did.

I slowly turned.

The man holding the gun wasn’t one of Vale’s soldiers.

He wasn’t a stranger.

He was wearing our patch.

One of our own.

Marcus stared.

“No…”

The man looked ashamed.

But he didn’t lower the weapon.

I recognized him.

Eddie.

A member who had been with us for ten years.

A man who fixed bikes in the garage.

A man who brought food to meetings.

A man who hugged everyone after victories.

Now he was pointing a gun at Noah.

“Eddie.””

My voice was quiet.

“Put it down.””

His hands shook.

“I can’t.””

“Why?””

His eyes filled with fear.

“Because if I don’t, they kill my daughter.””

The room went silent.

Everyone understood.

He wasn’t the enemy.

He was trapped.

I lowered my voice.

“Who has her?””

Eddie looked toward the door.

“Vale.””

A cold anger moved through me.

He wasn’t just controlling people.

He was owning them.

Using their families.

Their fears.

Their weaknesses.

I took one slow step forward.

“Eddie.””

He shook his head.

“Don’t.””

“I know what it feels like.””

His eyes flickered.

“To lose someone.””

I continued.

“I know what it feels like to think you have no choice.””

His grip loosened slightly.

“Bear…”

“You do have a choice.””

A tear rolled down his face.

Then the clubhouse doors opened.

Everyone turned.

A woman stood outside.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

The world stopped.

Noah looked at her.

Then at me.

Then back at her.

Vincent whispered the name nobody had said in twelve years.

“Rachel.””

She stepped into the light.

Her eyes found mine.

And the first words she spoke destroyed everything I thought I knew.

“Bear…”

Her voice broke.

“I’m sorry.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Then she looked at Noah.

And whispered:

“Please don’t hate me, son.””

Noah froze.

Because he knew that voice.

The voice he had spent his whole life missing.

His mother.

Rachel had come back.

But she wasn’t looking at the danger outside.

She was looking at me.

Like she knew the truth was worse than anything Vale could do.

And then she said the one thing that made my blood run cold.

“Bear, I didn’t disappear twelve years ago.””

May you like

She swallowed.

“I was hiding from the person standing beside you right now.””
