Chapter 7: The Principal’s Final Lesson

Maya stared at Mr. Harris.

For a moment, her mind refused to accept what her eyes were seeing.

The man standing in the doorway was the same person who had brought her books when she was sick.

The same person who had attended every school event after Daniel disappeared.

The same person who had told her, year after year, that some wounds needed time to heal.

Now he stood in the basement where Daniel had hidden his secrets.

And he was smiling.

“No.””

The word left Maya’s mouth before she realized she had spoken.

Mr. Harris looked almost disappointed.

“Maya.””

“Don’t.””

Her voice shook.

“Don’t say my name like you’re still the person who cared about me.””

Raymond moved closer to her.

“Stay behind me.””

The principal looked at him.

“Still playing the hero?””

Raymond’s expression hardened.

“You lied to her.””

Mr. Harris sighed.

“I protected her.””

Maya laughed bitterly.

“Everyone says that.””

The principal looked at her.

“Because it’s true.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“Protecting someone doesn’t mean stealing fifteen years of their life.””

The smile disappeared from his face.

“You don’t understand what was at risk.””

“Then explain.””

Silence.

“Explain why my brother had to disappear.””

Mr. Harris looked away.

That small movement told Maya everything.

He knew.

He had always known.

“You knew Daniel was alive.””

The principal didn’t answer.

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

The answer came quietly.

Maya felt like the floor moved beneath her.

“How long?””

Mr. Harris looked at the old photographs on the wall.

“Since the night he vanished.””

Raymond stepped forward.

“You were there.””

“Yes.””

“You saw him.””

“Yes.””

Maya’s eyes filled with anger.

“And you did nothing?””

Mr. Harris looked at her.

“I did what I had to do.””

“What you had to do?””

Her voice rose.

“You watched my family fall apart.””

“I kept you alive.””

Nobody spoke.

The words were terrifying because he believed them.

Maya stared at him.

“Who were you protecting me from?””

The principal looked at Victor.

Then at Raymond.

Then back at Maya.

“The same person Daniel was afraid of.””

“Who?””

Mr. Harris didn’t answer.

Maya stepped closer.

“I’m done with secrets.””

The principal studied her.

“You have your mother’s courage.””

“Don’t compare me to her.””

His expression softened.

“She was brave.””

“She was lied to.””

“Yes.””

“And you were part of that.””

A painful silence followed.

Mr. Harris looked older suddenly.

Not like Raymond.

Not like someone carrying regret.

Like someone carrying a decision he could never undo.

“I made one mistake.””

Maya stared.

“One?””

He ignored the anger in her voice.

“I trusted the wrong person.””

Victor crossed his arms.

“Linda?””

The principal looked at him.

“No.””

Everyone froze.

“Then who?””

Mr. Harris looked at Maya.

“Your father.””

The room went quiet.

Maya felt the air leave her lungs.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“No, you don’t get to do this.””

“Do what?””

“Turn every person I love into a monster.””

The principal’s expression changed.

“I’m not trying to hurt you.””

“You already did.””

Mr. Harris looked down.

“I thought your father was trying to fix what he had done.””

“What had he done?””

“He made a deal.””

Victor’s face hardened.

“What deal?””

The principal looked at him.

“A deal to protect the company.””

Raymond’s eyes narrowed.

“And Daniel found out.””

“Yes.””

Maya looked at the old computer.

“So Daniel knew.””

“Yes.””

“And he ran.””

The principal shook his head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

“Daniel didn’t run.””

Maya felt her heartbeat quicken.

“Then what happened?””

Mr. Harris looked toward the basement entrance.

“He disappeared because he wanted someone to believe he was gone.””

“Why?””

“Because he was trying to expose the truth.””

Victor stepped forward.

“You knew all along.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you let everyone blame me?””

The principal’s face tightened.

“Because if people believed you were involved, nobody would look deeper.””

Victor stared at him.

“That was your plan?””

“It kept the real person comfortable.””

Maya felt a chill.

“The real person?””

Mr. Harris nodded.

“The person who was watching all of us.””

A sudden sound came from above.

A door slammed.

Everyone looked up.

Mr. Harris’s face changed.

“He found us.””

Raymond grabbed the folder.

“Who?””

The principal didn’t answer.

Because the answer was already obvious.

Someone who had followed them.

Someone who knew about the basement.

Someone who knew about Daniel.

Maya looked at Victor.

“Your phone.””

Victor checked it.

Nothing.

Raymond checked his.

Nothing.

Then Maya’s phone buzzed.

One message.

No number.

Just a picture.

A photograph taken from inside the basement.

All of them.

The moment they entered.

Maya felt sick.

“He was watching.””

The principal nodded.

“Yes.””

“How?””

Mr. Harris looked at the ceiling.

“Because he has been watching for years.””

The basement lights flickered.

Then a voice came from the hallway speaker.

A voice Maya knew.

A voice that belonged to someone she trusted.

“Mr. Harris.””

Everyone froze.

Maya’s face went pale.

Because the voice was not a stranger.

It belonged to someone who had hugged her after Daniel disappeared.

Someone who had cried with her.

Someone who had always said they wanted answers too.

Linda Parker.

“Maya,” Linda’s voice continued through the speaker.

“I’m sorry.””

Raymond whispered.

“No.””

Maya looked at him.

“You know something.””

Raymond’s expression collapsed.

“She wasn’t supposed to be here.””

The speaker crackled.

Linda continued.

“I know you’re angry.””

Maya stepped toward it.

“Then come here and say it to my face.””

A pause.

Then Linda answered.

“I can’t.””

“Why?””

“Because if I walk into that room…”

Her voice shook.

“…you’ll see why Daniel trusted me.””

The basement door suddenly unlocked.

Everyone looked at it.

Slowly.

The handle turned.

Maya held her breath.

The door opened.

Linda Parker stood there.

Older than Maya remembered.

Tired.

Terrified.

But alive.

She looked directly at Maya.

“I didn’t betray your family.””

Maya stared.

“Then why did Daniel say not to trust the person protecting me?””

Linda’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because he wasn’t talking about me.””

“Then who was he talking about?””

Linda looked past Maya.

At Raymond.

The old man froze.

“No…”

Maya turned.

“What?””

Linda whispered:

“Daniel discovered the truth the night he disappeared.””

A pause.

“And the only person who knew where he was hiding…”

May you like

Her voice broke.

“…was Raymond.””
