Chapter 11: The Woman in the Hospital Room

Evelyn Whitmore was lying in a private hospital room when we arrived.

She was eighty-one years old, with silver hair, pale skin, and a thin gold necklace resting against her collarbone.

Machines beeped quietly beside her bed.

A police officer stood outside the door.

Richard approached the nurse.

“How is she?””

“She suffered a fall at her residence. There was evidence of a struggle, but she is conscious.””

“Can we see her?””

The nurse checked the chart.

“Only two visitors at a time.””

Richard looked at my father.

“Come with me.””

I stayed in the hallway with Margaret.

Through the glass window, I watched Richard approach his mother's bed.

Evelyn turned her head.

Her lips moved.

Richard leaned closer.

Then he suddenly stepped backward.

My father grabbed his arm.

“What did she say?””

Richard looked at him.

“She said Robert is alive.””

My father went completely still.

“Where?””

Richard turned toward the bed.

“She says he's coming here.””

I looked through the window.

Evelyn was crying.

For a moment, she looked less like a wealthy family matriarch and more like a frightened old woman.

Then she noticed me.

She lifted one trembling hand and pointed.

At me.

I entered the room.

“Mrs. Whitmore?””

Her eyes filled.

“You have Elizabeth's eyes.””

I stopped beside her bed.

“Did you take my brother?””

She closed her eyes.

“Please.””

“Did you take him?””

Her fingers tightened around the blanket.

“I did what I thought was necessary.””

My father stepped forward.

“Necessary?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“You don't understand what Arthur was planning.””

“I buried an empty coffin, Evelyn.””

She began crying.

“I know.””

“You let me mourn my son for eighteen years.””

“I know.””

My father leaned closer.

“Where did you send him?””

Evelyn turned toward Richard.

“Your brother should explain.””

Richard's expression hardened.

“You knew Robert was alive.””

She looked away.

“I thought he was dead.””

“Don't lie to me.””

Her breathing became uneven.

“Robert came to me in 2010. He wanted to see Thomas. He wanted to expose the foundation records. I told him the child had been adopted and was happy.””

My father gripped the bedrail.

“You knew where my son was?””

She nodded.

“Arthur arranged the adoption. I only signed the paperwork.””

“Only?””

Evelyn began crying harder.

“I was afraid.””

I stepped forward.

“Afraid of what?””

She looked at me.

“Losing everything.””

I almost laughed.

“You had everything. My father had nothing. My mother died.

My brother was taken. What exactly were you afraid of losing?””

Evelyn turned her face toward the wall.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she whispered:

“Robert was supposed to inherit the company. Arthur believed Thomas would eventually claim the Mercer trust and challenge the Whitmore succession. If the child grew up knowing who he was, he could destroy the agreement.””

Richard looked disgusted.

“So you gave my brother's child to our family and lied to everyone?””

Evelyn nodded.

“I thought it would keep him safe.””

My father shook his head.

“You kept him from his parents.””

A tear slid down Evelyn's cheek.

“I know.””

I reached into my bag and removed one of the birthday cards.

“Did you know my mother wrote these?””

Evelyn looked at it.

Her expression changed.

“She wrote eighteen cards?””

“All of them.””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“I was supposed to give them to him.””

“But you didn't.””

“No.””

“Why?””

She swallowed.

“Because the first time I saw him, he called me Grandma.””

The room became silent.

Evelyn's voice trembled.

“I couldn't tell him his mother was dead. I couldn't tell him his father was alive. I couldn't tell him he had a sister waiting for him.””

I stared at her.

“You could have told him everything.””

“Yes.””

“But you chose not to.””

She nodded.

Before anyone could speak again, the hospital room door opened.

A man entered.

He was tall, with silver hair, a weathered face, and a slight limp.

He wore a dark coat and carried a small leather bag.

Richard turned.

“Robert?””

The man stopped.

For several seconds, the two brothers stared at each other.

Then Richard whispered:

“I thought you were dead.””

Robert gave a tired smile.

“So did everyone else.””

My father stepped forward.

Robert looked at him.

“Daniel.””

My father's eyes filled.

“Where have you been?””

Robert lowered his head.

“Running from what I did.””

My father stared at him.

“You let me believe my son was dead.””

Robert nodded.

“I know.””

“You let Elizabeth die without knowing the truth.””

His eyes filled.

“I know.””

My father raised his voice.

“Then why are you here?””

Robert reached into his leather bag and removed a thick envelope.

“Because I have the original records.””

He placed them on the table.

“The trust transfers. The hospital authorization. The adoption agreement. And the security footage from the night Elizabeth died.””

I felt my heart pound.

“You have the footage?””

Robert nodded.

“I kept it because I knew one day someone would need to prove what happened.””

Richard opened the envelope.

Inside were several documents and a small flash drive.

Then Robert looked at me.

“You're Sophie.””

I nodded.

He smiled sadly.

“Your mother used to talk about you constantly.””

I felt tears sting my eyes.

“Did you love her?””

Robert looked down.

“Yes. But not the way your father did.””

He glanced at my father.

“I loved her enough to know she had chosen the right man.””

My father looked away.

Robert continued.

“I failed her. I failed you. And I failed Thomas.””

I stepped closer.

“Where is my brother?””

Robert hesitated.

“Ethan is with his adoptive aunt. He knows about the hospital records, but he doesn't know everything.””

My father looked confused.

“Why?””

Robert opened another document.

“Because there is a reason the adoption papers list me as his father.””

He pointed to the DNA report.

“The test was manipulated.””

Richard frowned.

“What?””

Robert nodded.

“Arthur ordered a second test. It confirmed Daniel was Thomas's biological father.””

My father stared at him.

“Then why did the first report say otherwise?””

Robert's expression hardened.

“Because someone changed the sample labels.””

I felt sick.

“Who?””

Robert looked at Evelyn.

She began crying.

But before she could answer, the police officer outside entered.

“Mr. Whitmore, I'm afraid we need to speak with you.””

Robert turned.

“About what?””

The officer held up a photograph.

“Your brother's car was found abandoned near the harbor this morning.””

Richard frowned.

“Which brother?””

The officer looked at him.

“Bryce's father, Mr. Whitmore. Richard.””

Richard stared.

“I'm standing right here.””

The officer hesitated.

Then he turned the photograph around.

It showed another man.

My father's face drained of color.

“That's Daniel.””

The officer nodded.

“Your vehicle was found with blood on the driver's seat.””

My father looked at the photograph.

Then he looked at Robert.

May you like

And Robert whispered:

“Someone knows we have the footage.””
