Chapter 5: The Secret Written on the Back

Maya read the sentence again.

My two children must never discover what happened that night.

The rooftop seemed to tilt beneath her feet.

“Two children?”” she whispered.

Samuel took the photograph from Marcus and examined the handwriting. His lips pressed together as he studied the date written beneath the message.

“Where did you get this?”” he asked the security officer.

“Inside an old storage cabinet in the service office, sir. It was sealed in an envelope addressed to Mr. Marcus.””

Marcus looked at the envelope.

His name had been written in dark blue ink, the letters slightly uneven.

He turned it over.

There was no return address.

“No one should have been able to access that cabinet,” he said.

Victor snatched the photograph from Samuel.

“Enough of this.””

He held it between his fingers, staring at the little boy.

Then he folded the photograph in half.

Maya gasped.

“Don't!””

She grabbed for it, but Victor tore the paper down the crease.

The sound was small.

The reaction was not.

Samuel lunged forward.

“What is wrong with you?””

Victor ripped the photograph a second time and dropped the pieces onto the wet tiles.

“There,” he said.

“Now we can stop pretending a piece of paper is evidence of anything.””

Maya stared at the torn fragments.

Something inside her hardened.

“You just destroyed a photograph of my childhood.””

“It was a copy.””

“How do you know?””

Victor didn't answer.

Maya took one step toward him.

“How do you know it was a copy?””

Marcus bent down and gathered the pieces before Victor could step on them. He placed them carefully inside the plastic envelope.

“Because he has seen it before,” Marcus said.

Victor's face went rigid.

Marcus stood.

“Have you, Victor?””

Victor adjusted his cuffs again.

“You're reaching.””

“Then answer the question.””

“I've seen thousands of photographs.””

“Of Daniel's children?””

Victor moved close enough that Marcus had to raise his chin to maintain eye contact.

“You should remember who signed your first executive contract.””

Marcus didn't flinch.

“And you should remember who signed Daniel's final documents.””

For a moment, the two men stared at each other with a hatred that had clearly existed long before Maya arrived.

She looked at Samuel.

“What happened that night?””

Samuel's eyes shifted toward the pool.

“I wasn't there when everything happened.””

“But you know something.””

“Yes.””

“Then tell me.””

He rubbed his thumb along the edge of his phone.

“I knew Daniel before he became wealthy. Before the companies and the properties. He was a young man who believed that money could solve almost anything.””

Samuel glanced at Victor.

“Then he discovered that money could also make people dangerous.””

Victor laughed sharply.

“That's a very convenient story from a man who spent years pushing a mop around our buildings.””

Samuel ignored him.

“Daniel loved a woman named Denise. They were together before anyone knew his name. When he learned she was pregnant, he wanted to marry her.””

Maya's throat tightened.

“Denise Carter?””

Samuel nodded.

“My mother?””

“Yes.””

Maya looked at the torn photograph in Marcus's hands.

“Then I was Daniel's daughter.””

Samuel's expression softened, but he didn't answer immediately.

“I believe Daniel thought you were.””

The distinction cut deeper than she expected.

“What does that mean?””

“It means people were telling him things he had no reason to believe were true.””

Victor stepped forward.

“Don't listen to him. Samuel has always had an unhealthy attachment to this family.””

Samuel turned on him.

“You're right about one thing. I cared about Daniel. I cared about Denise. And I cared about the little girl who used to fall asleep in the back room while her mother worked late.””

Maya felt tears gather in her eyes.

She had no memory of that room.

No memory of Samuel.

No memory of Daniel.

But she remembered her mother sitting at the kitchen table late at night, turning old envelopes over in her hands and crying when she thought Maya was asleep.

“Why did my mother leave?”” Maya asked.

Samuel's voice grew quieter.

“She believed someone was going to take you away from her.””

“Who?””

He looked directly at Victor.

Victor responded by pulling a folded document from the inside pocket of his white tuxedo.

“Since everyone seems determined to turn this into a public spectacle, perhaps we should discuss facts.””

He unfolded the paper and held it up.

It was a photocopy of a legal document bearing Daniel Whitmore's name.

Maya couldn't read the small print from where she stood, but she recognized the signature at the bottom.

Victor tapped it with one finger.

“This document was executed shortly before Daniel's death. It establishes the rightful beneficiary of his private estate.””

Marcus's expression changed.

“Where did you get that?””

“From the family records.””

“You told the board those records had been destroyed.””

Victor gave him a cold smile.

“I told the board what they needed to know.””

Maya reached for the paper.

Victor pulled it away.

“Not so fast.””

“What does it say?””

“It says that Daniel made arrangements for his surviving child.””

“Which child?””

Victor's eyes flicked toward Samuel.

Then he smiled.

“That's the question, isn't it?””

Marcus seized Victor's wrist and lowered the document.

“Stop playing games.””

Victor jerked free.

“Don't touch me!””

He turned to Maya.

“Your mother may have told you that you were special. She may have filled your head with stories about a father you never knew. But if you're hoping to claim a fortune because someone found an old photograph, you're going to be disappointed.””

Maya's face burned.

“I haven't asked you for a single dollar.””

“Not yet.””

“I want the truth.””

“And the truth is that you have no idea what your mother did to keep you hidden.””

Samuel stepped forward.

“Don't you dare blame Denise for what happened.””

Victor's eyes narrowed.

“Then perhaps you should tell Maya why Denise left you holding the child while she disappeared.””

Samuel looked as though he had been struck.

Maya turned toward him.

“You were taking care of me?””

Samuel lowered his head.

“For a little while.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“I tried.””

“When?””

Samuel's eyes shone.

“After your mother moved away, I went looking for you. The address I had was empty. Her old number was disconnected. Every letter I sent came back.””

Maya stared at him.

“My mother said nobody ever came looking for us.””

Samuel swallowed.

“She was wrong.””

A silence settled between them.

For the first time, Maya saw something beyond mystery in the old man's face.

Grief.

Years of it.

Then Marcus unfolded the document Victor had shown them.

He scanned the first page, his expression growing more troubled with every line.

“Victor,” he said slowly, “this isn't an inheritance document.””

Victor's smile vanished.

Marcus lifted the page.

“This is a declaration of guardianship.””

Maya felt the air leave her lungs.

“Guardianship of whom?””

Marcus looked at the final paragraph.

May you like

Then he raised his eyes to Victor.

“Of Maya.””
