Chapter 7: The Federal Agent's Secret

Amara Vaughn had spent thirty-one years believing that a badge represented a promise.

Now she was beginning to understand that, in the wrong hands, it could become a weapon.

She stood beneath the flickering light outside Room Twelve, staring at the photograph on Evelyn Brooks's phone. Daniel Mercer wore a dark suit and a silver tie, one hand resting on Chief Daniels's shoulder. Both men were smiling at the camera.

Behind them, a banner read: *MAPLE CREEK LAW ENFORCEMENT APPRECIATION DINNER.*

The photograph had been taken seven months earlier.

“Tell me everything,” Amara said.

Brooks slipped her phone into her coat pocket.

“Mercer was the lead investigator assigned to Samuel Cross's protection detail. He filed the preliminary report identifying the burned vehicle, then signed the certification that Cross had died.””

“And you didn't tell me he was still with the Bureau?””

“I didn't know he was connected to Maple Creek until we found the photograph.””

“That's not what I asked.””

Brooks looked away.

Amara stepped closer.

“Agent Brooks, if you know something that could compromise this investigation, now is the time to tell me.””

The younger woman rubbed her forehead.

“Six months ago, I reviewed an internal audit involving Mercer. There were irregularities in his witness-protection records. Missing signatures.

Access logs that didn't match his assignments. I submitted a report to my supervisor.””

“What happened?””

“The report disappeared.””

Amara's expression hardened.

“Disappeared?””

“My supervisor told me the discrepancies had been explained. When I asked to see the documentation, he said the matter had been resolved.””

“And you accepted that?””

“No.””

Brooks's answer came quickly.

“I made copies before submitting the report. I've kept them outside the Bureau's system ever since.””

Amara studied her.

“Why didn't you tell me earlier?””

“Because I didn't know whether you were involved in the original cover-up.””

The words stung, but Amara understood them.

“Fair enough.””

Brooks looked surprised.

“You're not offended?””

“I am. But your caution may be the only reason we're both still alive.””

A siren sounded in the distance.

Across the parking lot, agents were searching the buildings where Samuel had disappeared. A uniformed officer carried a bloodstained cloth toward a waiting vehicle.

Amara pointed toward it.

“Is that Samuel's?””

“We don't know yet.””

“Then find out.””

Brooks spoke into her radio, requesting an immediate forensic examination and a search of the surrounding streets.

When she finished, Amara asked, “Where can we review your copies?””

“Not here. Not on a Bureau computer.””

“Do you have somewhere secure?””

Brooks hesitated.

“My sister owns a small accounting office in Frederick. She keeps an offline workstation for sensitive client records. No network connection.””

“Then we're going there.””

“Your Honor, we need to locate Price first.””

“We need both. If Mercer is involved, Daniel Price may be our only living witness who can establish what happened after Samuel disappeared.””

Brooks nodded.

They were walking toward the SUV when Amara's phone rang again.

Elena.

Amara answered immediately.

“Are you safe?””

“Mom?”” Elena sounded confused.

“Of course. I'm at my apartment. Why?””

“Lock your doors. Don't let anyone inside unless you can independently verify who they are.””

A pause.

“What's going on?””

“I can't explain everything right now.””

“Mom, you don't call me at this hour and tell me to lock my doors unless something is terribly wrong.””

Amara closed her eyes.

“Someone has been using your photograph to threaten me.””

Silence.

Then Elena's voice changed.

“Who?””

“We don't know yet.””

“Are you in danger?””

“I'm with federal agents.””

“That wasn't my question.””

Amara glanced at Brooks.

“Yes,” she admitted.

“I may be.””

“Then come here. Bring whoever you trust. We can figure this out together.””

“That's exactly what I don't want you involved in.””

“Too late, Mom. Someone already involved me.””

Elena took a shaky breath.

“There's something I need to tell you.””

“What is it?””

“Three days ago, a man came to my office. He said he was investigating a complaint involving one of my clients. He asked questions about your old cases.””

Amara's stomach tightened.

“What was his name?””

“He showed me a federal badge. Daniel Mercer.””

Brooks stopped walking.

Amara stared at her.

“What did he want?””

“He asked whether you kept personal copies of sealed court records. I told him that would be improper, and he laughed.””

“What else?””

“He asked whether you had ever mentioned Samuel Cross to me.””

Amara gripped the phone.

“What did you say?””

“That I'd never heard the name.””

A door slammed somewhere behind them.

Elena continued, her voice trembling.

“Mom, before he left, he said something strange. He told me that if you ever contacted me about a case from four years ago, I should call him immediately.””

Amara felt cold spread through her chest.

“Did you call him?””

“No.””

“Did you tell anyone?””

“No. I thought he was trying to intimidate me.””

“You were right.””

“Mom, what's happening?””

Amara looked at Brooks, who was already opening the passenger door.

“I'll explain when I can do it safely. For now, stay inside. Keep your phone charged. If anyone approaches you, call emergency services and then call me.””

“Mom?””

“Yes?””

“Don't trust a badge just because it's shiny.””

Despite everything, Amara almost laughed.

“I won't.””

The call ended.

Brooks looked at her.

“Mercer knew about Elena before we even arrived in Maple Creek.””

“Yes.””

“And he knew you were investigating the Cross case.””

“Yes.””

“Which means this isn't just about Daniels.””

“No,” Amara replied.

“It never was.””

She climbed into the SUV.

As Brooks started the engine, a message appeared on Amara's phone from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph of a small, locked storage unit.

Beneath it were six words.

*THE ORIGINAL DEATH CERTIFICATE IS HERE.*

Then another message arrived.

*COME BEFORE MERCER DESTROYS IT.*

Amara showed Brooks.

The agent studied the image.

“Do you recognize the location?””

Amara enlarged the photograph.

On the wall behind the storage unit was a faded sign bearing the name of a company she remembered from the Cross investigation.

*NORTHSTAR LOGISTICS.*

The company had been dissolved three years earlier.

Its owner had been found dead in his home.

And Daniel Mercer had signed the report declaring that death accidental.
