Chapter 10: The Room of Blood
“Mom!””
Luca ran after Evelyn.
She reached the hidden staircase first.
The brass key marked *BLOOD* was still in his hand.
Behind him, Victoria shouted, “Luca, wait!””
He ignored her.
The staircase descended beneath the mansion, narrower than the one above. Stone walls pressed close on both sides. The air smelled of dust, cold metal, and something faintly chemical.
Evelyn stopped at the bottom.
There was a door.
No handle.
No lock.
Only a small circular opening at eye level.
Luca reached her.
“You knew this was here.””
Evelyn turned.
“Yes.””
“What happened in this room?””
She looked at the door.
“Your father kept his enemies here.””
“Alive?””
Her silence answered him.
Luca's jaw tightened.
“You let this happen.””
“I tried to stop it.””
“But you knew.””
“Yes.””
“Then tell me the truth.””
Evelyn looked at the brass key.
“Your blood opens the door.””
Luca inserted it.
A click echoed through the corridor.
The door opened.
Inside was not a torture chamber.
It was an office.
A desk.
Two chairs.
A wall of photographs.
And dozens of locked filing cabinets.
At the center of the room stood a single wooden table.
On it was a small tape recorder.
Luca walked toward it.
His father's voice began before he touched it.
“If you're here, my son, then I failed.””
Luca stopped.
The recording continued.
“I know what you have been told about me. Some of it is true.””
Victoria entered behind him.
Adrian followed.
Daniel stayed near the doorway.
Evelyn stood completely still.
The recording continued.
“I built an empire by making enemies disappear. I told myself it was necessary. I told myself I was protecting my family.””
Luca stared at the tape recorder.
“I was lying.””
His father's voice cracked slightly.
“I was protecting myself.””
Luca looked at the photographs.
There were dozens of people.
Politicians.
Businessmen.
Judges.
Police officers.
And ordinary men and women.
Some were crossed out in red.
Others had dates beside their faces.
Then Luca saw one photograph that made his blood run cold.
Elena.
Seventeen years old.
Standing beside Evelyn.
And another person.
Luca stepped closer.
The man beside them was his father.
But Elena wasn't looking at him.
She was looking at the camera.
Terrified.
Luca turned toward her.
“You were there.””
Elena nodded.
“I told you.””
“No. You told me you gave him the key.””
“I did.””
“What aren't you telling me?””
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
“Your father threatened my family.””
Luca stared.
“He had my father arrested.””
“Why?””
“Because my father helped your mother escape.””
Evelyn lowered her head.
Elena continued.
“Your father told me I could save my family if I helped him.””
“What did he make you do?””
“Find Adrian.””
Luca looked at his brother.
Elena whispered, “I found him.””
Adrian closed his eyes.
“I remember.””
“You were the one who brought him here?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I thought your father was going to let him go.””
Adrian looked at her.
“You were a child.””
“So were you.””
The room fell silent.
Luca looked at Evelyn.
“You said you were trying to save Adrian.””
“I was.””
“But Elena brought him here.””
Evelyn nodded.
“I made a terrible choice.””
Luca stepped toward her.
“Why?””
“Because your father found out Adrian was Nathaniel Cross's son.””
Daniel's face tightened.
“And he couldn't let that become public.””
Luca looked at Daniel.
“Why was Nathaniel so dangerous?””
Daniel answered quietly.
“Because he owned the evidence.””
“What evidence?””
Daniel pointed toward the filing cabinets.
“Everything your father had done.””
Luca looked back at the recorder.
His father's voice continued.
“Nathaniel discovered that I had been laundering money through charitable foundations and using political connections to eliminate anyone who threatened me.””
Luca's stomach turned.
The voice continued.
“Nathaniel intended to expose me.””
Luca whispered, “So you killed him.””
“No.””
Daniel spoke.
“Your father ordered it.””
Evelyn looked at Daniel.
“You were there.””
“I was seventeen.””
“You watched.””
“And I couldn't stop it.””
Luca stared at him.
“Then why did you protect Adrian?””
“Because Adrian was Nathaniel's son.””
Daniel's voice broke.
“He was the only part of my brother I could save.””
Luca looked toward Adrian.
“And my father?””
Adrian answered.
“He wanted both of us dead.””
A faint click came from the tape.
Then Luca's father's voice returned.
“There is one final truth you deserve.””
Luca stepped closer.
“My son, the man you believed was your father was not your biological father.””
He looked at Evelyn.
She closed her eyes.
“You were born from Nathaniel.””
Luca froze.
Daniel whispered, “Luca…”
“No.””
Luca backed away.
“My father was Nathaniel?””
Evelyn nodded.
“Yes.””
Adrian stared at him.
“So we're brothers.””
“Half-brothers,” Evelyn said.
Luca looked at Daniel.
“Then you're not my father.””
“No.””
“Why did everyone keep calling you that?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Because your real father was dead.””
The recording continued.
“I took Luca because Nathaniel was dead and Evelyn was being hunted. I raised him as my own.””
Luca's eyes filled with tears.
“For what?””
His father's voice answered:
“Because I wanted his bloodline to remain hidden.””
Luca stared at the recorder.
“And because I believed one day I could use his inheritance to control Nathaniel's remaining empire.””
Victoria stepped closer.
Luca turned toward her.
“Did you know?””
She nodded.
“I learned after we met.””
“And you still stayed.””
“I loved you.””
“You were sent to spy on me.””
“Yes.””
“You were supposed to kill me.””
“Yes.””
“But you didn't.””
“No.””
“Why?””
Victoria looked at him through tears.
“Because the first time I saw you, you were sitting alone at your father's funeral.””
Luca said nothing.
“You looked terrified,” she whispered.
“Everyone around you wanted something. Your money. Your name. Your father's power.””
She wiped her face.
“And you were just a boy.””
Luca's expression softened for one second.
Then hardened again.
“You should have told me.””
“I know.””
“Before tonight.””
“I know.””
The tape clicked again.
Luca's father's final words filled the room.
“I know you will hate me. You should.””
A pause.
“But if you have reached this room, then you have found the truth.””
The recorder crackled.
“The third key does not open another door.””
Luca looked at the brass key.
“It opens the accounts.””
A hidden panel slid open beneath the desk.
Inside was a computer terminal.
The screen illuminated.
A single message appeared:
*TRANSFER AUTHORIZED — HEIR: LUCA CROSS*
Luca stared.
“Cross.””
His real family name.
The account balance appeared beneath it.
Billions.
Victoria covered her mouth.
Adrian stepped closer.
“That's Nathaniel's money.””
Luca shook his head.
“No.””
The screen changed.
Documents began appearing.
Bank records.
Property deeds.
Names.
Dates.
Photographs.
Everything.
Luca understood.
His father's empire had never been his father's.
It had belonged to Nathaniel.
His father had stolen it.
And now it was being returned.
A final file opened automatically.
It contained one sentence:
*The heir must decide whether the empire survives.*
Luca looked at the filing cabinets.
Then at the people standing around him.
Evelyn.
Adrian.
Victoria.
Daniel.
Elena.
Every person connected to the secret.
He walked to the desk.
He selected every account.
Every hidden company.
Every political fund.
Every property.
Then he pressed one button.
*RELEASE.*
Victoria stared.
“What did you do?””
“I ended it.””
Luca turned off the screen.
“I'll give the evidence to federal investigators.””
Daniel nodded.
“You're destroying everything your father built.””
Luca looked at him.
“That's the point.””
Outside the room, sirens began approaching.
This time, real ones.
Marcus had called federal authorities before the corrupt police could regain control of the mansion.
Luca walked toward the exit.
Evelyn stopped him.
“Luca.””
He turned.
She looked smaller now.
Not the mysterious woman from the photographs.
Just his mother.
“I am sorry.””
Luca stared at her for a long moment.
“I believe you.””
She began to cry.
“But forgiveness comes later.””
He walked past her.
Adrian followed.
At the top of the stairs, Elena remained behind.
Luca stopped.
“You don't have to work here anymore.””
She looked surprised.
“What?””
“You're free.””
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
“Thank you.””
Victoria stood alone in the ruined dining room.
Her red gown was torn at the shoulder.
Her diamond necklace lay broken across the floor.
Luca looked at her.
“You knew this engagement would end.””
She nodded.
“I did.””
“Was any of it real?””
Victoria's eyes met his.
“Yes.””
She removed the ring from her finger.
Placed it on the table.
Then whispered:
“The worst part is that I loved you before I knew I was supposed to destroy you.””
Luca didn't answer.
He walked toward the mansion doors.
Behind him, the chandelier lights flickered back on.
Morning sunlight was beginning to reach Manhattan.
For the first time in twelve years, Luca walked out of his father's house without carrying his father's name.
Adrian stepped beside him.
“What will you do now?””
Luca looked toward the city.
“Build something he can't own.””
Adrian smiled.
“And the family?””
Luca glanced back at the mansion.
“The truth is the family now.””
Behind them, federal agents entered the house.
The secret doors were opened.
The files were seized.
The empire began collapsing before sunrise.
And somewhere inside the mansion, the old tape recorder continued playing one final message.
His father's voice whispered into the empty room:
“Luca, I'm sorry.””
May you like
The machine clicked.
Then silence.
