Chapter 10: The Signature That Changed Everything

“Don't touch her.””

Thomas's voice cut through the cottage.

Daniel stood beside the writing desk, one hand resting on the forged agreement, his expensive shoes leaving muddy marks across the wooden floor. He looked perfectly composed, as though he had arrived for a business meeting rather than to confront a seven-year-old child whose entire life he had built on lies.

Lily stood between Thomas and Rebecca, clutching the yellow house drawing.

“Is it true?”” she whispered.

Thomas looked at her.

“No, Lily. I never signed that agreement.””

“Then why is your name there?””

“Because someone wanted you to believe I did.””

Daniel gave a short laugh.

“An impressive explanation. Unfortunately, the document was witnessed by two people, both of whom are willing to testify.””

Rebecca slammed her hand against the desk.

“You forged my signature, too!””

Daniel turned toward her.

“Careful, Rebecca. You spent seven years telling doctors that you were being held against your will. Do you really want to start making accusations now?””

Rebecca flinched, but she didn't retreat.

“I remember what you did.””

“Do you?”” Daniel asked.

“Or do you remember what Samuel told you to remember?””

Thomas stepped forward.

“You've done enough.””

Daniel reached into his coat and produced a folded sheet of paper.

“Have I? Then perhaps you'd like to explain this.””

He placed it beside the agreement.

It was a bank statement showing a transfer of five hundred thousand dollars from Rebecca's estate into an account registered under Thomas Cole's name.

The date was seven years earlier.

Thomas stared at the page.

“I've never seen this account.””

“Of course not,” Daniel replied.

“You were clever enough to hide it.””

Lily looked at her uncle.

“Did you take my money?””

Thomas's expression broke.

“No.””

Daniel sighed theatrically.

“Lily, sweetheart, I know this is confusing. Your uncle has always been good at making people feel sorry for him.””

“Stop talking to her like that,” Rebecca snapped.

Daniel turned to her.

“Why? Because you think you can suddenly become her mother again after abandoning her for seven years?””

Rebecca's face crumpled.

“I didn't abandon her. You told me she was dead.””

“And you believed me.””

The words struck harder than a shout.

Rebecca lowered her head.

Daniel leaned toward Lily.

“You see? Everyone has made mistakes. But I'm the only one who stayed.

I raised you. I gave you a home, clothes, toys, and everything you needed.””

Lily stared at him.

“Mommy gave me everything I needed.””

For the first time, Daniel's composure slipped.

“Your mother is dead.””

“Because you hurt her!””

The accusation burst from Lily before she could stop it.

Daniel went still.

Thomas moved toward her, but Lily didn't look away from her father.

“You said you watched Mommy take medicine. I heard you on the recording. You said you wouldn't let her be a problem anymore.””

Daniel's face hardened.

“Who gave you that recording?””

“Vanessa.””

He laughed bitterly.

“Vanessa is a frightened little liar who will say anything to protect herself.””

“Then why are you scared of what she says?””

Daniel's hand struck the desk.

The sound made Lily jump.

“Because you don't understand what you're talking about!””

“Daniel!”” Rebecca shouted.

He turned toward her.

“You've spent seven years in a hospital because you couldn't accept reality. Don't pretend you understand anything.””

Rebecca looked him straight in the eyes.

“I understand that you couldn't marry a woman who controlled her own money. I understand that you stole from her family, took her child, and locked her away when she refused to cooperate.””

Daniel's mouth tightened.

“And I understand,” she continued, “that Eleanor discovered everything.””

For several seconds, Daniel said nothing.

Then he smiled.

“Eleanor was a sentimental fool.””

Thomas lunged forward.

“You don't get to speak about her.””

Daniel stepped back and raised both hands.

“Fine. Let's discuss the evidence instead.””

He tapped the agreement.

“Thomas, your signature is here. Rebecca's signature is here. And the transfer documents establish that you received the money.””

“Those documents are fake,” Thomas said.

“Prove it.””

Thomas looked at the bank statement again.

Then something changed in his expression.

He picked up the page and examined the account number.

“This account was opened after Rebecca disappeared.””

Daniel's smile faded.

Thomas pointed to the date.

“The bank listed here didn't even open this branch until the following year. This is a fabricated statement.””

Daniel snatched the page from his hand.

“You're mistaken.””

“No. I'm not.””

Thomas reached for his phone.

“I'm calling the police.””

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

“Go ahead. By the time they arrive, I'll have a lawyer here who can explain why you're trespassing on private property and attempting to abduct my daughter.””

“She isn't your biological daughter,” Rebecca said.

Daniel turned slowly.

“She is legally my daughter.””

“Because you manipulated the adoption process.””

“Because the court approved it.””

Rebecca shook her head.

“The court never saw the original birth certificate.””

Daniel's expression changed.

Thomas noticed.

So did Lily.

For the first time that evening, Daniel looked genuinely uncertain.

Rebecca lifted the original certificate from the desk.

“You knew this document existed. That's why you came here.””

Daniel took a step toward her.

“Give it to me.””

“No.””

“Rebecca, don't make me ask again.””

“You've controlled my life for seven years. You won't control hers.””

Daniel reached for the paper.

Rebecca tore it in half.

The sound was small, but Daniel reacted as though she'd struck him.

“You stupid woman!””

He seized her wrist.

Thomas grabbed his arm.

“Let her go!””

The two men struggled against the desk, knocking the lamp to the floor. Lily screamed as the papers scattered around their feet.

Then a new voice rang through the cottage.

“Everyone step away from the desk!””

A woman stood in the doorway, holding up a phone.

Patricia Mills.

Behind her stood two uniformed police officers.

Daniel released Rebecca immediately.

Patricia lowered her phone but kept recording.

“I heard enough from outside,” she said.

“And I have a copy of the forged bank statement, the medical report, and the audio recording.””

Daniel straightened his jacket.

“This is a private family matter.””

One officer stepped forward.

“Mr. Carter, we need to speak with you about allegations of fraud, unlawful confinement, and possible involvement in Eleanor Carter's death.””

Daniel's expression turned cold.

“You have no evidence connecting me to her death.””

Patricia held up her phone.

“Actually, we do.””

She played the recording Vanessa had given her.

Daniel's own voice filled the cottage.

She won't be a problem anymore.

Then Samuel's.

Are you certain?

And finally, Daniel's chilling reply.

I watched her take the last dose myself.

The officers exchanged glances.

Daniel looked at the floor.

For the first time, he had nothing to say.

One officer approached him.

“Sir, please come with us.””

Daniel raised his hands.

“This is absurd. I'm a respected businessman. I have lawyers, contracts, and witnesses.””

Patricia's voice was steady.

“And Eleanor had a daughter who loved her.””

Daniel looked at Lily.

Something almost like regret crossed his face.

“Sweetheart, tell them you know I would never hurt your mother.””

Lily stared at him.

She remembered his hand holding hers at the funeral.

She remembered the way he had tucked her into bed after nightmares.

She remembered believing that nothing bad could happen while he was in the house.

Then she remembered the locked bedroom.

The missing dresses.

The recording.

“I don't know who you are anymore,” she whispered.

The officer took Daniel by the arm.

As they led him toward the door, he turned back toward Thomas.

“This isn't over.””

Thomas stood beside Rebecca, one arm around Lily.

“No,” he said quietly.

“It isn't.””

Because even as Daniel was escorted into the rain, Patricia was examining the torn birth certificate.

She had managed to recover both halves.

And there was something written on the back that none of them had noticed before.

A handwritten message from Eleanor.

If Daniel is arrested, don't assume the danger is over. He isn't the person who arranged Rebecca's confinement.

Patricia looked up.

“Thomas, who else knew about Westbridge?””

Thomas frowned.

“Samuel Reed. Daniel. Vanessa.””

“And anyone who worked at the facility,” Rebecca added.

Patricia shook her head.

“No. Eleanor wrote something else.””

She turned the paper over.

At the bottom, beneath the message, was a name.

*Judge Martin Whitmore.*
