Chapter 11: The Truth My Father Buried

The way Vanessa said his name made my heart stop.

Not because she sounded angry.

Because she sounded afraid.

My father looked at her.

“What?””

She shook her head.

Nothing.

But everyone saw it.

Everyone knew.

There was one question nobody wanted to ask.

And somehow, I already knew the answer.

I turned toward my father.

“Did you know someone was trying to hurt Mom?””

He didn’t answer.

My chest tightened.

“Dad.””

He looked at me.

His eyes were full of regret.

“Yes.””

The word destroyed something inside me.

I stepped backward.

“You knew?””

“I didn’t know who.””

“But you knew?””

He swallowed.

“I knew she was in danger.””

The room felt smaller.

My mother looked at him.

“You promised.””

My father looked at her.

“I was trying to protect Maya.””

“No.””

Her voice was quiet.

“You were trying to protect your fear.””

The words hit him.

Because they were true.

I looked at my father.

“What happened that night?””

He closed his eyes.

And for the first time, he stopped fighting the truth.

“The accident wasn’t random.””

Nobody moved.

“I knew someone was following your mother.””

My hands went cold.

“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””

“Because your mother told me not to.””

My mother nodded slowly.

“She thought if anyone knew she was investigating, they would move faster.””

“Who was she investigating?””

My father looked at Richard.

Then at Vanessa.

Then at me.

“Someone close.””

My mother whispered:

“Daniel.””

He shook his head.

“She deserves to know.””

Nobody stopped him.

“She found evidence that someone inside the company was working with someone outside.””

My father’s voice became quieter.

“Your mother wanted to expose them.””

“Who?””

He looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

My mother looked disappointed.

“You never found out?””

“No.””

Richard spoke.

“I did.””

Everyone turned.

My father’s face hardened.

“You.””

Richard nodded.

“I found out after Amelia disappeared.””

My mother looked at him.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Richard looked at her sadly.

“Because you were supposed to stay hidden.””

The words shocked me.

“You knew she was alive?””

“Yes.””

“For nine years?””

“Yes.””

I couldn’t understand.

“How could everyone know except me?””

Nobody answered.

Because there was no answer that could make it better.

Vanessa stood.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

She looked broken.

“I know that doesn’t fix anything.””

“No, it doesn’t.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

My mother walked toward me.

“I wanted to come back.””

I looked at her.

“Then why didn’t you?””

Her face collapsed.

“Because I was told you would be safer without me.””

“By who?””

She looked at my father.

The room froze.

My father looked away.

I whispered:

“Dad?””

He didn’t respond.

“Did you tell her not to come back?””

His silence answered.

I felt something crack inside me.

Not anger.

Pain.

Because the person who raised me had made the biggest decision of my life without me.

My mother wiped her tears.

“I thought he was right.””

My father looked at her.

“I thought I was.””

The honesty made it worse.

A long silence followed.

Then Marcus spoke.

“There’s something else.””

Everyone looked at him.

He held a small envelope.

My heart sank.

Another letter.

Another secret.

“I found this after Box 317 was opened.””

My mother stared.

“Where?””

“Inside the box.””

“But you said it might be empty.””

“It was.””

He looked at me.

“Almost.””

I took the envelope.

My name was written on it.

Again.

Maya.

My fingers shook.

I opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

Not my mother.

Not my family.

A picture of a building.

On the back was a message.

“THE TRUTH WAS NEVER IN THE BOX.””

I looked up.

My mother looked confused.

“What does that mean?””

I turned the photograph over.

There was another line.

“THE BOX WAS ONLY MEANT TO LEAD YOU HERE.””

A location was written underneath.

A place I recognized.

Because it was somewhere I had been hundreds of times.

My childhood home.

My old house.

The place where my mother and I lived before everything changed.

I looked at my father.

“Why would she send us there?””

He stared at the photograph.

Then whispered:

“Because that’s where she hid the real evidence.””

Before anyone could move, my mother’s phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Her face went pale.

“What?””

I watched her answer.

Nobody spoke.

She listened.

Then slowly lowered the phone.

“It’s the police.””

My father stepped forward.

“Why?””

My mother looked at me.

“They found something at the old house.””

“What?””

She looked terrified.

“A room.””

I frowned.

“We never had a room.””

My mother whispered:

“We did.””

May you like

A pause.

“A room your father helped me hide.””
