Chapter 11: The Choice My Father Made
My father didn’t move after the call ended.
The phone remained pressed against his ear even though the line was dead.
“Dad?””
Nothing.
“Dad.””
He finally lowered it.
But he didn’t look at me.
That scared me more than anything.
Because my father had always looked at me.
Even when he was angry.
Even when he was sad.
Even when he didn’t have answers.
Now he looked away.
Like he was ashamed.
Vanessa whispered:
“Daniel.””
He shook his head.
“Not here.””
My heart sank.
Not here.
Another delay.
Another secret.
I stepped between them.
“No.””
Everyone looked at me.
“I’m done waiting.””
My voice surprised even me.
“I spent my whole life believing my mother died. Then I found out she’s alive. I found out everyone knew something I didn’t. I found out my family has been hiding things from me.””
I looked at my father.
“And now I find out you made some kind of deal?””
His face broke.
“Maya.””
“No.””
Tears burned my eyes.
“I need the truth.””
The room was silent.
Finally, my father sat down.
“I made a mistake.””
Nobody spoke.
He looked at the floor.
“Eight years ago, your mother found evidence that someone was trying to access your trust.””
“The money?””
He nodded.
“She thought it was someone close.””
“Who?””
My father swallowed.
“I didn’t know.””
That answer sounded familiar.
But this time, I believed him.
Because he looked destroyed.
“She came to me that night.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
My father continued.
“She showed me documents.””
“What documents?””
“Proof that someone had attempted to change ownership of accounts connected to you.””
My stomach tightened.
“And what did you do?””
He looked at me.
“I made a choice.””
The room waited.
“I went to the person responsible.””
My father’s voice lowered.
“I confronted them.””
“Who?””
He didn’t answer.
Not because he was hiding.
Because saying the name hurt.
“Your grandfather.””
The room went silent.
My grandfather.
A man I barely remembered.
A man I thought was just another person I lost.
“You confronted him?””
“Yes.””
“What happened?””
My father looked at his hands.
“He offered me a deal.””
My heart pounded.
“What deal?””
“He said he would leave Maya alone.””
I felt cold.
“Leave me alone?””
My father nodded.
“In exchange, I had to agree to something.””
“What?””
He looked at me.
“I had to pretend I didn’t know anything.””
Nobody spoke.
I stared at him.
“You stayed quiet?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because he threatened to take you away from me.””
The words hit.
Hard.
My father’s eyes filled.
“He had money. Influence. Lawyers. He said he could make it look like I wasn’t stable enough to raise you.””
My breathing slowed.
Suddenly, everything changed.
My father wasn’t hiding because he didn’t care.
He was hiding because he was terrified.
But there was still one question.
“My mother knew?””
He nodded.
“She found out.””
“And that’s why she said you betrayed her.””
My father looked away.
“Yes.””
The pain in his face was unbearable.
“She wanted me to fight.””
“But you didn’t.””
“No.””
“Why?””
He looked at me.
“Because I chose you.””
The answer broke something inside me.
Because it was the kind of answer only a parent could give.
A flawed answer.
A painful answer.
But a loving one.
Vanessa began crying quietly.
“I should have told you.””
My father looked at her.
“You were protecting her.””
“Yes.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“We were all making choices for Maya without asking Maya.””
That sentence stayed with me.
Because he was right.
Everyone had loved me.
Everyone had protected me.
Everyone had lied to me.
The same hands that held me up had also covered my eyes.
Mason placed his folder on the table.
“There’s something else.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He opened it.
Inside was another document.
“This is why your mother disappeared.””
I leaned closer.
A legal agreement.
A signature.
My mother’s.
My father’s.
And another name.
I stared.
“What is this?””
Mason answered:
“A transfer agreement.””
“For what?””
He looked at me.
“Control of the trust.””
My father’s face changed.
“No.””
Mason nodded.
“Yes.””
I looked at the paper.
The agreement wasn’t giving the money away.
It was moving control.
But not to my grandfather.
To someone else.
Someone unexpected.
Someone whose name was written at the bottom.
I read it.
Then looked up.
“Vanessa?””
Everyone turned.
Vanessa froze.
May you like
Because the document said:
*Temporary guardian and protector of Maya Carter’s assets: Vanessa Carter.*
