Chapter 5: The Brother She Met First
“I didn't know it was him.””
Serena's confession seemed to stop time.
Adrian stood beneath the white flowers, his brother's photograph in one hand and his phone in the other. Around him, the wedding guests remained seated, afraid to move, afraid even to whisper.
He looked at Serena.
“What does that mean?””
She shook her head.
“I swear to you, Adrian, I didn't know.””
“You didn't know who?””
“The man in the photograph.””
“Darius?””
Serena nodded.
Adrian held up the image Thomas had brought.
“You're telling me you met my missing twin brother before you met me?””
“I didn't know he was your brother!””
“Then how did you meet him?””
Serena pressed both hands against her wedding gown, crushing the delicate fabric between her fingers.
“My father arranged a meeting.””
Thomas stared at her.
“Your father told you to find Darius?””
“He told me to find a man named Marcus. He said Marcus had information about a family record that could change everything.””
“Marcus Reed?”” Adrian asked.
“Yes.””
“And you kissed him outside the courthouse.””
Serena flinched.
“He was comforting me.””
Adrian stared at her in disbelief.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“No. I expect you to understand that I was terrified.””
“Then explain the kiss.””
Serena looked toward Margaret.
Margaret's expression had become unreadable. She no longer cried. She simply watched Serena, as if waiting for her to say something that would either confirm or destroy the last hope she had.
Serena took a shaky breath.
“Marcus told me he had found someone who might be your twin. He showed me a photograph. I recognized the resemblance immediately.””
Adrian's voice dropped.
“Because you had already seen my face.””
“No. Because I had seen your brother's face.””
The words landed heavily.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Serena, tell us exactly when you first saw that photograph.””
“Six months ago.””
“Where?””
“In my father's study.””
Thomas gripped the back of a pew.
“My son never had access to that study.””
Serena looked at him.
“Your son wasn't the only person my father knew.””
Thomas went still.
Adrian noticed.
“What is it?””
Thomas's expression had changed.
“Your father,” he said slowly to Margaret, “was he ever connected to the Hayes family?””
Margaret shook her head.
“Not that I knew.””
Serena let out a bitter laugh.
“My father was connected to everyone who mattered in this story.””
Adrian turned toward her.
“Who is your father?””
She looked down at her hands.
“Richard Hayes.””
Thomas's face drained of color.
Daniel lowered the documents.
Margaret whispered, “No.””
Adrian looked between them.
“What? Who is Richard Hayes?””
Thomas answered quietly.
“The hospital administrator who signed your original discharge authorization.””
Adrian's stomach tightened.
Serena closed her eyes.
“My father ran the hospital's records department for years. He knew about the two babies. He knew what happened to them. And he knew the truth was buried in the files.””
“Then why didn't he tell anyone?”” Adrian demanded.
“Because he helped bury it.””
A shocked murmur swept through the chapel.
Serena wiped her face with the back of her hand.
“He told me that when the twins were born, there was a mistake. A terrible mistake. He said one child was placed with the wrong family, and the hospital covered it up because the people involved had money and influence.””
Thomas shook his head.
“That's not what happened.””
Serena turned to him.
“How would you know?””
“Because I was there!””
He struck the pew with his palm.
“I was in that hospital. I saw your father speaking to the doctors. I watched him carry documents from one office to another. When I asked where the babies were, he told me one had died.””
Adrian looked at him.
“Why were you there?””
Thomas hesitated.
The pause was brief, but Adrian caught it.
“Why were you at the hospital when I was born?””
Thomas looked at Margaret.
She lowered her head.
The silence returned.
Adrian's voice became dangerously quiet.
“Every time I ask a question, one of you looks at the other. I'm done with that. Tell me what happened.””
Thomas pulled out a chair and sat down heavily.
“I was at the hospital because I was supposed to take one of the babies home.””
Adrian stared.
“What?””
Thomas rubbed his hands together.
“Your mother and I were young. We weren't married. My family didn't approve of our relationship.
Her family didn't approve either. When she became pregnant, everything became complicated.””
Margaret's eyes filled again.
“Thomas, please.””
“No,” he replied.
“He deserves the truth.””
Adrian looked between them.
“Are you saying you're my biological father?””
Thomas nodded.
The chapel seemed to sway around Adrian.
He gripped the edge of the altar.
For thirty-five years, he'd believed the man whose name appeared on his birth certificate was his father. That man had died when Adrian was twelve. He remembered the funeral, the black suit his mother had bought him, the way Margaret held his hand as the casket was lowered into the ground.
Now a stranger was telling him that the man who had raised him wasn't his biological father.
“Who raised me?”” Adrian whispered.
Margaret answered through tears.
“Your legal father, James Brooks. He loved you more than anything.””
“And he knew?””
“No.””
Thomas looked down.
“James was told that you were his son. He never knew about the second baby.””
Adrian turned toward him.
“And you let him raise me?””
“I was told your brother had died and that you were going home with Margaret and James. I believed the records.””
“Then why did you disappear?””
Thomas's eyes glistened.
“Because when I came back the next morning, Margaret and both babies were gone.””
Margaret shook her head.
“I was moved to another hospital room. They told me the other baby had been transferred.””
“Transferred where?”” Adrian asked.
“I never found out.””
Thomas's voice cracked.
“And when I demanded answers, Richard Hayes told me I would be arrested if I continued making accusations.””
Adrian looked at Serena.
“Your father threatened my biological father?””
“Yes.””
“And you knew this?””
“I learned it six months ago.””
“Why didn't you go to the police?””
Serena stared at him.
“Because my father showed me a document that said Darius had been legally adopted. He told me that exposing the records would destroy the life Darius had built.””
“So you decided to investigate me instead?””
“I wanted to know if you knew anything.””
“And when you discovered I knew nothing?””
Serena's tears fell faster.
“I fell in love with you.””
Adrian looked away.
He remembered the first time he had met Serena at a charity event. She had laughed at his terrible joke, asked about his work, and listened as he spoke about his mother. Their first date had lasted four hours. Their first kiss had felt effortless.
Had any of it been real?
“You approached me because of my family,” he said.
“At first.””
“And then you decided to marry me without telling me that you were investigating my birth?””
“Yes.””
He closed his eyes.
The chapel was bright, crowded, beautiful.
It suddenly felt like a courtroom.
Daniel checked his phone again.
“There's another message.””
Adrian turned.
“From whom?””
“Marcus.””
Daniel read it aloud.
Darius knows about the wedding. He has seen the photographs. He wants to speak to Adrian before the ceremony ends.
Adrian held out his hand.
“Call him.””
Daniel dialed.
The phone rang once.
Twice.
Then a man's voice answered.
“Daniel?””
“Marcus, I'm with Adrian Brooks. He's listening.””
A pause followed.
Then Marcus spoke.
“Adrian, I need you to know that I never intended to hurt you.””
Adrian's face hardened.
“You kissed my fiancée.””
“I know.””
“Why?””
“Because she was crying.””
“That's your explanation?””
“No. It's the truth about that moment. The rest is more complicated.””
Adrian's grip tightened around the phone.
“Where is Darius?””
“Not with me.””
“Then where is he?””
Marcus hesitated.
“He left after I showed him the hospital records.””
“Left where?””
“He said he needed to see someone before he came to you.””
Adrian felt his heart pounding.
“Who?””
Marcus's voice dropped.
“Your legal father's sister. The woman who helped raise you after James died.””
Adrian stared at Margaret.
“My aunt Evelyn?””
“Yes.””
“Why would Darius go to her?””
Marcus took a breath.
“Because she was the one who signed the original adoption papers.””
Margaret gasped.
Thomas stood so quickly that his chair scraped across the floor.
“No,” he whispered.
Adrian turned toward him.
“What does that mean?””
Thomas looked as if he might collapse.
Then Marcus spoke again.
“Adrian, there's something else. Darius didn't just discover he might be your brother. He discovered that someone has been sending money to the family that raised him for thirty-five years.””
“Who?””
Marcus paused.
“The payments came from an account belonging to your mother.””
Adrian slowly turned toward Margaret.
She stared back at him, tears running down her face.
“Mom?””
Margaret opened her mouth.
But before she could answer, Daniel's phone rang again.
This time, the name on the screen was unfamiliar.
Daniel answered.
A woman's panicked voice filled the chapel.
“Is Adrian there? This is Evelyn Brooks. You need to listen to me very carefully.””
Adrian took the phone.
“Aunt Evelyn, what's going on?””
Her breathing was ragged.
“Your brother came to my house.””
“And?””
“He showed me the adoption papers.””
Adrian waited.
Then his aunt whispered, “I told him what I promised your father I would never tell anyone.””
“What did you tell him?””
A crash sounded on her end of the call.
May you like
Evelyn screamed.
Then the line went dead.
