Chapter 7: The Man Her Father Trusted
Richard read the message twice before showing it to Evelyn.
“Someone knows we're investigating,” he said.
Evelyn studied the screen, her expression hardening with every word.
“Is this number connected to Vanessa?””
“I don't know yet.””
Maya stood between them, still holding the two brass keys. The gala continued around her in an uncomfortable imitation of normal life. Guests whispered beneath the chandeliers, waiters collected untouched glasses, and the bright ballroom lights reflected across the marble floor.
She looked at Richard.
“Are they threatening me?””
Richard slipped his phone into his jacket.
“Someone is trying to frighten us. That doesn't mean they can hurt you.””
“But they know my name.””
“Yes,” he admitted.
“And that's why we're going to be careful.””
Evelyn placed a protective hand on Maya's shoulder.
“We are not leaving you alone with anyone tonight.””
Maya looked down at the photograph of her father and the unidentified man.
“Grandma, you said Dad never promised Vanessa the lake house. What did he promise her?””
Evelyn hesitated.
“I believe your father made a promise about the property. But I don't believe it was the promise Vanessa wanted.””
Richard turned toward her.
“Evelyn, if you know something relevant, we need to discuss it now.””
“I know Daniel trusted someone outside the family with a responsibility that was never supposed to become public.””
“Who?””
Evelyn held up the photograph.
“This man.””
Maya examined the picture again. The man's face was partially obscured by sunlight, but she could see his broad shoulders, his close-cropped hair, and the watch on his left wrist.
“Was he Dad's friend?””
“He was more than that,” Evelyn said.
“Daniel considered him a brother.””
“What happened to him?””
Evelyn's eyes lowered.
“He disappeared from our lives many years ago.””
Richard shook his head.
“That's not quite accurate. He left after a dispute over a business transaction. Daniel tried to contact him several times.””
“What kind of dispute?”” Maya asked.
“A dispute involving money and a property development,” Richard replied.
“I was not involved at the time, so I won't pretend to know every detail.””
Evelyn touched the photograph.
“His name was Andre Walker.””
The name meant nothing to Maya.
“Where is he now?””
“We don't know,” Evelyn said.
Richard looked at the brass keys in Maya's hand.
“Unless the buyer of the lake house is connected to him.””
Maya's stomach tightened.
“You think Andre bought Dad's house?””
“I think we need to establish who purchased it before drawing conclusions.””
Richard took out his phone and called his office.
“It's Richard Cole. I need the lake house transaction file reviewed first thing tomorrow. Pull the public property records, preserve the authorization documents, and prepare a formal request for the closing records.
Also, I received a threatening message concerning a minor beneficiary. Preserve the number and the message.””
He listened for several seconds.
“Yes. No accusations until we have evidence.””
He ended the call.
Evelyn looked at Maya.
“We should get you home.””
Maya flinched at the word.
Home.
Which home?
The house where Vanessa had ordered her to stay out of certain rooms? The bedroom where she had spent nights listening to the silence left by her father's death? Or the lake house that now belonged to a stranger?
“I don't want to go back to Vanessa's house,” she whispered.
Evelyn's expression softened.
“You don't have to decide everything tonight. We'll make sure you have a safe place to stay while the adults sort this out.””
Maya nodded, although the uncertainty still pressed against her chest.
Before they could leave, Marcus hurried toward them.
“Richard, there's another problem.””
Richard turned.
“What happened?””
“The foundation's finance director just called me. Vanessa instructed the bank to freeze the account used for Maya's educational expenses.””
Maya stared at him.
“My school money?””
Marcus nodded.
“She says it's part of an estate review.””
Richard's jaw tightened.
“Did the bank confirm the instruction?””
“They confirmed they received it. They haven't determined whether it was authorized.””
Evelyn closed her eyes briefly.
“She's retaliating against a child.””
Marcus lowered his voice.
“There's something else. The finance director says Vanessa requested a transfer from the foundation's reserve account last week. The board never approved it.””
Richard became very still.
“How much?””
Marcus told him.
Evelyn's hand tightened on Maya's shoulder.
“Was the transfer completed?””
“Not yet,” Marcus answered.
“The bank flagged it because the authorization didn't match the foundation's current records.””
Richard looked at Maya's father's photograph.
“Preserve everything. No one should alter or delete any records.””
Marcus nodded and hurried away.
Maya looked at Richard.
“Did Vanessa steal Dad's money?””
“I don't know,” he said.
“But we have several transactions that need independent review.””
Maya swallowed.
“She told me Dad left debts. She said that's why she had to sell the house.””
“Then the records should tell us whether those debts existed and where the sale proceeds went.””
Richard's phone vibrated again.
This time, the message contained an image.
He opened it.
It showed the lake house from the road, photographed through the front gate. A black SUV sat in the driveway. Beside the porch stood a tall man in a charcoal coat.
Richard enlarged the image.
Maya watched his face change.
“Is that the buyer?””
“I can't confirm that from this picture.””
Evelyn leaned closer.
Then she gasped.
“That watch.””
Richard glanced at her.
“What?””
“The man's watch. Look at the photograph Daniel gave us.””
They placed the two images side by side.
In the old photograph, the unidentified man standing beside Daniel wore a distinctive silver watch with a dark rectangular face.
The man in the new image wore the same watch.
Maya's heart began to pound.
“That's Andre?””
“It could be,” Richard replied.
“But we need to verify his identity.””
Another message arrived.
This one contained no picture.
Only an address and a time.
*LAKE HOUSE. TOMORROW, 10 A.M. COME ALONE IF YOU WANT THE TRUTH ABOUT YOUR FATHER.*
Evelyn immediately shook her head.
“No.””
Maya looked at her.
“But what if Andre knows something?””
“We will not send you alone to meet an unidentified person who has just received or sent threatening messages,” Richard said firmly.
“Then you'll come with me?””
“If the meeting can be verified and safely arranged, I'll handle the necessary precautions. We won't follow instructions from an anonymous number.””
Maya stared at the photograph.
For six months, she had believed her father had left her behind with nothing but memories.
Now every document seemed to reveal another piece of a life she had never known existed.
She slipped the two keys into her dress pocket.
“I'm not going to let Vanessa scare me into giving up.””
Evelyn looked at her granddaughter with quiet pride.
“You don't have to surrender your courage to prove you're strong.””
Maya nodded.
Then Richard's phone rang.
The caller ID displayed a name he hadn't seen in years.
He answered immediately.
“Hello?””
A man's voice came through, low and controlled.
“Richard, I heard Vanessa made a spectacle of herself tonight.””
Richard straightened.
“Who is this?””
A pause.
Then the man answered.
“Andre Walker.””
Richard glanced at Evelyn.
She covered her mouth.
Andre continued.
“I need to tell you something about Daniel's lake house. But before I do, you need to understand one thing.””
Richard tightened his grip on the phone.
“What?””
Andre's voice dropped.
“Vanessa didn't sell that property because she needed money.””
A long silence followed.
“Then why did she sell it?”” Richard asked.
Andre gave a bitter laugh.
“Because she discovered what Daniel buried beneath it.””
The call ended.
Maya stared at Richard.
“What did he mean?””
Richard slowly lowered the phone.
He had no answer.
May you like
But when he looked at the two brass keys in Maya's hand, he suddenly understood why Daniel had insisted that both survive.
And whatever waited beneath the lake house, Vanessa had been willing to destroy a child's future to keep it hidden.
