Chapter 9: The Name My Mother Hid
The message appeared on my father’s phone.
One sentence.
A sentence that made the entire room stop breathing.
*Now ask Ava why her mother never told her who her real father was.*
I read it once.
Then again.
The words didn’t make sense.
Not because they were unclear.
Because my mind refused to accept them.
My real father?
I looked at Daniel.
My father.
The man who raised me.
The man who taught me how to ride a bike.
The man who stayed awake when I was sick.
The man who came to every school event, every performance, every important moment.
“You’re my father.””
My voice came out barely above a whisper.
Daniel looked at me.
His face broke.
“Ava…”
“No.””
I stepped back.
“No, tell me this isn’t real.””
Evelyn looked devastated.
Rachel looked away.
Even Marcus looked uncomfortable.
Everyone knew something except me.
That feeling was worse than any secret.
“Dad?””
Daniel walked toward me.
“Ava, listen to me.””
“Is it true?””
He stopped.
That was all the answer I needed.
My chest tightened.
“Is it true?””
He swallowed.
“Yes.””
The word destroyed something inside me.
Not because he wasn’t my father.
Because he had known.
I left the office before anyone could stop me.
I didn’t run.
I didn’t cry.
I just walked.
Because if I stopped moving, I was afraid everything would collapse.
The hallway blurred around me.
Employees smiled politely as I passed.
They had no idea.
Nobody knew that my entire identity had just been questioned.
Outside, I sat on the steps of the building.
For several minutes, I stared at nothing.
Then someone sat beside me.
Daniel.
I didn’t look at him.
“I need space.””
“I know.””
“Then why are you here?””
“Because I should have been here years ago.””
That hurt.
I looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
He took a deep breath.
“It means I should have told you.””
“Tell me what?””
He looked down.
“The truth about your birth.””
My eyes filled.
“Who is my father?””
Daniel was quiet.
Then he said:
“His name was Anthony.””
The name meant nothing.
A stranger.
A person who existed somewhere in my life without me knowing.
“Who was he?””
Daniel looked at the street.
“Your mother loved him.””
The words were painful.
But not because of jealousy.
Because I realized my father had spent years carrying something alone.
“What happened?””
“Anthony died before you were born.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He had a heart condition.””
Daniel’s voice became softer.
“Your mother was pregnant with you when he passed.””
I stared at him.
“Then why didn’t she tell me?””
“You were a child.””
“I’m not asking why she didn’t tell five-year-old me.””
I looked at him.
“I’m asking why nobody told me when I was old enough.””
Daniel had no answer.
And that hurt.
We went back inside.
The others were waiting.
Evelyn stood near the window.
She looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
I didn’t respond.
“You have every right to be angry.””
“Why did everyone hide this?””
Nobody answered.
Then Evelyn spoke.
“Because your mother was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“Of Vanessa.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everything is Vanessa.””
Evelyn nodded.
“Because Vanessa was involved in everything.””
She opened the folder again.
“Your mother found out Vanessa was trying to access the trust account.””
I looked at the documents.
“But what does my biological father have to do with that?””
Evelyn looked at Daniel.
“Anthony was the one who created the trust.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He was wealthy.””
Daniel nodded.
“Anthony wanted to make sure you were protected.””
I looked at the papers.
“So the money was from him?””
“Yes.””
“And Vanessa knew?””
“Yes.””
My stomach turned.
“So she wasn’t just trying to stop me from going to college.””
“No,” Evelyn said.
“She was trying to take control of something that belonged to you.””
Marcus stood quietly in the corner.
I looked at him.
“What about you?””
His eyes moved toward me.
“I made mistakes.””
“That’s not an answer.””
He nodded.
“You’re right.””
He looked ashamed.
“I helped Vanessa access information.””
“Why?””
He hesitated.
“Because she convinced me your father was hiding money.””
My father stared at him.
“You believed her?””
“I thought I was protecting the company.””
“You helped steal from my daughter.””
Marcus lowered his eyes.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
“Why admit it now?””
He looked at me.
“Because I realized I wasn’t protecting anyone.””
That evening, we discovered the final piece.
The document Greg had sent wasn’t a confession.
It was a challenge.
He wanted us to find something.
Rachel studied the papers.
“There’s a pattern.””
My father looked at her.
“What?””
“The dates.””
She placed several documents side by side.
The trust agreement.
The fake withdrawal form.
The bank transfers.
The university correspondence.
“They all happened around the same time.””
I looked closer.
She was right.
Everything began when I received my university acceptance.
“Why now?””
Evelyn answered.
“Because the trust becomes available when Ava turns eighteen.””
I felt cold.
“My birthday.””
Daniel nodded.
“Your eighteenth birthday was the trigger.””
Everything suddenly made sense.
Vanessa didn’t care about my education.
Not really.
College was just the reason.
The real target was the money.
My future.
My mother’s final gift.
Then my father found the hidden file.
It was inside the company archive.
The file Greg had taken.
The one everyone had been searching for.
Inside were emails.
Hundreds of them.
Between Greg and Vanessa.
I read the first one.
*The girl cannot leave until the transfer is complete.*
My hands shook.
Another:
*Daniel must believe the account belongs to family expenses.*
Another:
*If Ava discovers the truth, everything fails.*
My father closed his eyes.
“She used me.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“Yes.””
He stared at the screen.
“I trusted every person who betrayed me.””
I touched his arm.
“Dad.””
He looked at me.
And for the first time in days, I saw the man who raised me.
Not the man who had made mistakes.
Not the man who had been deceived.
My father.
“I’m sorry.””
I shook my head.
“You’re still my dad.””
His eyes filled.
“But I lied to you.””
“You were trying to protect me.””
“I made the wrong choice.””
I nodded.
“But you’re fixing it now.””
The police report was filed the next morning.
The company began an internal investigation.
Marcus agreed to cooperate.
Evelyn gave her statement.
And Vanessa…
Vanessa disappeared.
For three days, nobody heard from her.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A familiar voice.
“Ava.””
My body went cold.
“Vanessa.””
She laughed softly.
“I knew they would turn you against me.””
“You did that yourself.””
Silence.
Then:
“You think you know the truth?””
“I do.””
“No, you know the version they gave you.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“You think I wanted your money?””
“Didn’t you?””
“No.””
Her voice changed.
For the first time, she sounded desperate.
“I was trying to stop your mother’s mistake.””
My heart tightened.
“What mistake?””
A pause.
Then:
“The trust was never the secret.””
I said nothing.
Vanessa continued.
“Your mother left something else behind.””
“What?””
“You need to ask Daniel what happened the night she died.””
“I already know.””
“No.””
Her voice became sharper.
“You know what he remembers.””
A chill ran through me.
“What are you saying?””
Vanessa whispered:
“Your father wasn’t the only person in that car.””
The line went silent.
Then she said:
“And the person who caused the accident…”
I stopped breathing.
“Was someone your mother trusted.””
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
My father walked into the room.
He immediately saw my face.
“What happened?””
I looked at him.
And I knew.
There was one final truth left.
One truth everyone had been running from.
“Dad…”
“Yes?””
“Who was in the car with Mom the night she died?””
His face changed.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
Fear.
And then he whispered:
“Someone who should have never been there.””
Before he could explain, a message arrived.
A photo.
An old photograph of the accident scene.
May you like
And standing beside the car…
Was Vanessa.
