Chapter 10: The Truth I Chose to Forget

The drive sat on the desk between us.

A piece of metal no bigger than my thumb.

But somehow it felt heavier than the entire building around me.

Because everyone in that room knew what was inside.

Everyone except me.

General Hayes stood silently.

Vanessa looked away.

Reeves stared at the floor.

Nobody wanted to be the first person to speak.

Finally, I picked up the drive.

“Tell me one thing.””

Hayes looked at me.

“What?””

“Did I ask you to erase my memory?””

His face changed.

Not surprise.

Pain.

“Yes.””

The answer was quiet.

But it was enough.

I closed my fingers around the drive.

“Why?””

The general took a slow breath.

“Because you discovered something that broke every assumption we had.””

“What?””

He looked at the screen.

At the two photographs.

“At the beginning of Project Sentinel, we believed we were searching for a traitor.””

“And?””

“We were wrong.””

The room waited.

“You were searching for yourself.””

I stared at him.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“It didn’t make sense to you either.””

I felt a strange pressure behind my eyes.

A memory trying to surface.

A door.

A hallway.

A voice.

But every time I reached for it, it disappeared.

“What was I?””

Hayes looked down.

“Six months ago, you found evidence that someone had created a duplicate identity.””

“My duplicate.””

“Yes.””

“And I discovered it.””

“Yes.””

“Then why erase my memory?””

His eyes met mine.

“Because when you found out who created the duplicate…”

A pause.

“You realized the person responsible was not an enemy.””

I frowned.

“Who was it?””

Hayes looked at the drive.

“You.””

The room became completely silent.

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“No.””

I stepped back.

“That’s impossible.””

Hayes didn’t argue.

He simply let the truth sit there.

And somehow that was worse.

“You created her?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

“You created the plan.””

The words hit harder.

“What plan?””

Vanessa finally spoke.

“Captain, before the explosion, you discovered a pattern.””

I looked at her.

“Pattern?””

“You noticed that classified operations were being compromised before they happened.””

“Because someone was leaking information.””

“Yes.””

“But we didn’t know who.””

“No.””

She looked at the other Sophia’s photograph.

“Until you realized the leaks were connected to people who didn’t exist.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Fake identities.””

My expression changed.

“Someone was creating fake personnel?””

“Yes.””

“And I found them.””

“Yes.””

Reeves stepped forward.

“You found one identity in particular.””

I looked at him.

“Whose?””

His voice lowered.

“Yours.””

The room became quiet again.

I stared at the photograph.

The other Sophia.

“You’re saying she was created by the enemy.””

“No.””

Hayes shook his head.

“She was created by you.””

My heart raced.

“Explain.””

The general sat down.

For the first time, he looked exhausted.

“During the investigation, you discovered that someone was using your identity.””

“Yes.””

“You knew whoever created that identity had access to everything you had.””

“My clearance.””

“Yes.””

“My files.””

“Yes.””

“My relationships.””

“Yes.””

“So I exposed them.””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“You joined them.””

I felt the words before I understood them.

“What?””

“You realized the only way to find the person behind it was to understand the system from inside.””

Vanessa continued.

“You created a controlled duplicate identity.””

“For what?””

“To bait the person responsible.””

I stared.

“You mean…”

I looked at the photograph.

“She was a trap.””

“Yes.””

A strange feeling moved through me.

Not fear.

Recognition.

Like a missing piece had finally returned.

“I created her.””

“Yes.””

“Then why don’t I remember?””

Hayes looked at the drive.

“Because the trap worked.””

I waited.

“You discovered who was behind the operation.””

“Who?””

The general looked at Vanessa.

Then Reeves.

Then me.

“Someone close.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

I grabbed the drive.

“Enough.””

I connected it to the secure terminal.

The screen opened.

One file.

Only one.

*PROJECT SENTINEL — FINAL MEMORY RECORD*

My hands went cold.

“Final?””

Hayes nodded.

“This is the recording from before the explosion.””

I clicked.

A video appeared.

My face filled the screen.

But it was not the face I knew.

It was me six months earlier.

Tired.

Serious.

Focused.

I watched myself sit in a dark room.

Speaking into a camera.

“If you are watching this, something went wrong.””

My breath stopped.

My own voice.

My own words.

The recording continued.

“First, understand this. Do not trust the person who says they protected you.””

I looked at Hayes.

He looked away.

The video version of me continued.

“General Hayes will believe he is making the right choice.””

A pause.

“But he will make the same mistake everyone makes.””

I leaned closer.

The recording looked directly into the camera.

“He will try to save me instead of trusting me.””

My chest tightened.

The video continued.

“I created a second identity because the enemy needed someone to follow.””

The other Sophia.

“She is not a replacement.””

A pause.

“She is not a copy.””

My eyes moved to the photograph.

“She is a continuation.””

The room went silent.

My past self continued.

“After the operation, one of us will remember everything.””

The recording stopped.

Then restarted.

A second message.

This time, only for me.

“If you are watching this, Sophia…”

My past self looked almost sad.

“You forgot.””

I felt tears forming before I understood why.

“You forgot because you chose peace over revenge.””

The room disappeared.

Only the screen remained.

“You discovered who betrayed us.””

A pause.

“And you chose to erase that knowledge because you knew what you would become if you kept it.””

My breathing became uneven.

“What did I become?””

The recording answered.

“Someone who would sacrifice anyone to win.””

Silence.

Then the final words.

“Remember this.””

The video showed my younger self placing a document on the table.

“The enemy is not the person who copied your identity.””

A pause.

“The enemy is the person who convinced you that you were alone.””

The screen went black.

Nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“You remembered.””

I closed my eyes.

And suddenly…

Everything returned.

The explosion.

The hospital.

The investigation.

The moment I discovered the truth.

The moment I realized the traitor was not an outsider.

It was someone inside Project Sentinel.

Someone trusted.

Someone with access.

Someone who had been guiding every step.

I opened my eyes.

“I know who did it.””

Everyone looked at me.

Hayes stood.

“Who?””

I looked at the two photographs.

The two Sophia Carters.

Then I looked at Reeves.

Major Daniel Reeves went still.

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

“You knew.””

His expression changed.

“Captain—”

“You were the one who accessed my workstation.””

“No.””

“You were the one who altered the files.””

“No.””

“You were the one who knew the duplicate identity existed.””

His face lost color.

Vanessa stepped back.

“Daniel.””

Reeves looked around.

The room had changed.

He was no longer part of the investigation.

He was the investigation.

“I was trying to protect the mission.””

Hayes’s voice hardened.

“By destroying it?””

Reeves shook his head.

“You don’t understand.””

I stared at him.

“Then explain.””

He looked at me.

“You were going to expose everything.””

“What everything?””

“The entire intelligence structure.””

Silence.

He continued.

“You found out that the duplicate program wasn’t created by an enemy.””

“Then who?””

Reeves looked at the photographs.

“The military created it.””

Nobody moved.

The truth landed slowly.

Project Sentinel was never about finding the traitor.

It was about hiding what had already been done.

I looked at Hayes.

“You knew.””

He nodded.

“I found out later.””

“And you covered it.””

“I tried to fix it.””

Reeves laughed bitterly.

“That’s what you always do.””

He looked at me.

“You find the truth, then you decide who deserves to know it.””

I understood then.

The betrayal wasn’t simple.

It wasn’t one villain.

It was a chain of choices.

People protecting secrets.

People protecting careers.

People protecting each other.

And me.

Somewhere in the middle.

Trying to decide what kind of person I wanted to be.

Security officers entered the room moments later.

Reeves didn’t fight.

He simply looked at me.

“You really don’t remember everything, do you?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

He smiled sadly.

“Maybe that’s why you won.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Because the old Sophia would have burned everything down.””

The officers escorted him away.

The room slowly emptied.

Eventually, only Vanessa and I remained.

She looked at me.

“What happens now?””

I looked at the photographs.

Two women.

One name.

One impossible story.

“I don’t know.””

For once, that answer felt honest.

Outside, the base continued.

People walked.

Vehicles moved.

Life continued.

The world did not change because a secret was revealed.

But I did.

I picked up the photograph.

Not the one of the two Sophia Carters.

The one of myself before the explosion.

The person who made a choice.

The person who trusted someone else to carry a piece of her life.

Maybe I would never know exactly what happened to the other Sophia.

Maybe she was a copy.

Maybe she was a continuation.

Maybe she was the part of me that refused to disappear.

But I knew one thing.

I was done running from the truth.

My phone vibrated.

One final message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

Only one sentence.

*“Captain Carter, if you’re reading this, then I know you finally remember.””*

A second message appeared.

A photograph.

A woman standing outside the base.

Same face.

Same eyes.

The other Sophia.

Below the picture were four words.

*“I’m still here.””*

I looked at the screen.

Then out the window.

For the first time, I didn’t feel afraid.

Because the greatest mystery was never whether there were two Sophia Carters.

It was whether both of us were fighting for the same truth.

May you like

And now…

I finally had my answer.
