Chapter 7: The Plan Beneath the Surface

Adrian stared at the photograph until the words on the back stopped looking like ink and started feeling like a warning.

Ask what she planned.

The problem was, he already knew the answer to the first question.

Vanessa had planned something.

The harder question was how far she had been willing to go.

He spent the entire night going through every document Marcus had provided. Every date. Every conversation. Every connection.

And the more he looked, the more he realized something terrifying.

Vanessa had not entered his life randomly.

She had studied it.

She knew about his company.

She knew about Mia’s trust.

She knew about the property.

She knew about the weaknesses in his family.

And somehow, she had learned the one thing Adrian hated admitting most.

He wanted to be loved.

After losing Mia’s mother, after becoming a single father, after trying to balance grief with raising a child, Adrian had wanted someone to walk beside him.

Vanessa had appeared at exactly the right moment.

Or maybe exactly the right moment for her.

The next morning, Adrian met Marcus again.

“I need everything,” Adrian said.

Marcus looked at him.

“Everything?””

“Every contact. Every financial record. Every person connected to her.””

Marcus nodded.

“I’ll keep digging.””

Adrian hesitated.

“There’s something else.””

“What?””

“I want to know about Tasha Bell’s involvement.””

Marcus opened his notebook.

“You think she helped Vanessa?””

“I think she knows more than she’s saying.””

Two hours later, Adrian sat across from Tasha Bell in a small café outside the city.

She looked nervous before he even introduced himself.

That told him enough.

“You know who I am,” Adrian said.

Tasha looked down at her coffee.

“Yes.””

“And you know why I’m here.””

She swallowed.

“I figured.””

Adrian placed the photograph on the table.

Tasha stared at it.

“When was this taken?””

“You tell me.””

She didn’t answer.

“Tasha.””

Her shoulders dropped.

“Two years ago.””

“Before Vanessa moved into my house.””

“Yes.””

“Why were you with her at a law office?””

Tasha looked toward the window.

For several seconds, Adrian thought she would leave.

Instead, she whispered:

“She said she needed advice.””

“About what?””

“About protecting herself.””

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“From who?””

Tasha finally looked at him.

“From you.””

The answer hit him harder than he expected.

“Why would she need protection from me?””

“Because she said you would never choose her over Mia.””

Adrian felt anger rise.

Not explosive anger.

The quiet kind.

The kind that comes when someone confirms a fear you already had.

“What exactly did she ask the lawyer?””

Tasha looked ashamed.

“She asked about what would happen if something happened to you.””

The room seemed to go silent.

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?””

“She asked about guardianship.””

“For Mia?””

Tasha nodded.

“She wanted to know if she could control things if you were gone.””

Adrian sat back.

For a moment, he couldn’t speak.

Because there it was.

The thing hidden beneath all the small cruelties.

The reason Vanessa had spent so much time making Mia feel small.

She wasn’t just trying to hurt a child.

She was trying to remove an obstacle.

Tasha continued.

“She wasn’t always like this.””

Adrian looked at her.

“That doesn’t excuse anything.””

“I know.””

“Then why help her?””

Tasha looked down.

“Because I thought she was my friend.””

“And now?””

Tasha sighed.

“Now I think she used me too.””

Adrian left the café with more answers than he wanted.

But one thing bothered him.

Tasha had not seemed like someone protecting Vanessa.

She had seemed afraid of her.

That night, Adrian sat in the living room when his phone rang.

Vanessa.

He stared at the screen.

Part of him wanted to ignore it.

The other part knew conversations revealed things.

He answered.

“What do you want?””

Her voice was quiet.

“Can we talk?””

“About what?””

“About us.””

Adrian looked toward the staircase where Mia was sleeping.

“There is no us until you explain what happened.””

A pause.

Then Vanessa said something unexpected.

“I know you hate me.””

“I don’t hate you.””

“Then why does it feel like you do?””

“Because I don’t recognize you.””

The silence lasted several seconds.

Finally, Vanessa said:

“I made mistakes.””

Adrian closed his eyes.

“Mistakes are leaving the lights on. Forgetting appointments. Missing a call.””

His voice hardened.

“You don’t accidentally research how to take control of someone’s child.””

Vanessa went quiet.

“You investigated me.””

“I looked for answers.””

“No.””

Her voice changed.

“You looked for reasons to leave.””

Adrian shook his head.

“That’s what you still don’t understand.””

“What?””

“I wasn’t looking for a reason to leave.””

He looked upstairs.

“I was looking for a reason to believe my daughter.””

And that was when Vanessa lost control.

“You always do this!””

Adrian frowned.

“Do what?””

“Make everything about her!””

There it was.

The truth hiding behind the anger.

Adrian didn’t respond.

Vanessa realized too late what she had said.

Her breathing changed.

“Adrian…”

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“I heard you.””

She tried to recover.

“I didn’t mean it like that.””

“But you meant it.””

The call ended.

And Adrian sat there knowing something had finally broken.

Not his marriage.

That had started breaking long before.

May you like

What broke was the illusion.

The belief that love alone could make someone good.
