Chapter 7: The Ghost In The Crash Report
Nobody spoke.
Not because there was nothing to say.
Because there were too many things.
Bear stared at Lena, waiting for the rest of the sentence.
Waiting for the part where she explained.
Waiting for her to tell him that this was another misunderstanding.
Another lie with a simple answer.
But Lena looked like someone who had finally reached the moment she had spent twenty years fearing.
The moment when the truth could no longer be avoided.
Mia held onto her mother’s hand.
“Mommy?””
Lena looked down immediately.
The fear on her face softened.
“I’m here.””
Mia searched her eyes.
“Were you really gone because you had to be?””
Lena closed her eyes.
A tear slipped down her cheek.
“Yes.””
“Not because you didn’t want me?””
That broke Lena completely.
She pulled Mia close.
“Never.””
Bear looked away.
Because he understood that kind of pain.
The kind that came from believing someone left you.
The kind that stayed with you even after the truth arrived.
Tasha watched silently.
Her anger was still there.
But something else was there too.
A small piece of relief.
Bear turned back to Lena.
“Explain.””
Lena nodded slowly.
“Twenty years ago, Ryder discovered Marcus wasn’t just leaking information.””
Bear crossed his arms.
“What was he doing?””
Lena looked at the old photograph on the table.
“He was building something.””
“Building what?””
“A network.””
The word sounded wrong in the quiet garage.
Bear frowned.
“Network?””
“People inside different places. Police. Businesses.
Clubs. Anyone who could erase evidence or make problems disappear.””
Elias looked at her.
“You knew?””
Lena looked at him.
“I knew pieces.””
“You never told me.””
“Because I didn’t know who I could trust.””
Elias looked hurt.
For the first time, Bear saw something between them.
Not friendship.
Not anger.
Something worse.
Regret.
Bear noticed.
“You two knew more than you told me.””
Neither answered.
That was answer enough.
Bear walked toward the workbench.
The old photograph was still there.
Ryder.
Lena.
Elias.
Three people who had all carried secrets.
And Bear had been the only one left behind.
“You all decided I couldn’t handle the truth.””
Lena shook her head.
“No.””
Bear looked at her.
“We decided you were the only person who would never stop looking.””
The words landed harder than expected.
Bear said nothing.
Lena continued.
“Marcus knew that too.””
The room became colder.
“He knew Ryder trusted you.””
Bear looked down.
“So he removed Ryder.””
Lena nodded.
“And when Ryder survived…”
Bear’s head snapped up.
“He survived?””
Lena hesitated.
“Yes.””
A painful silence followed.
Bear’s voice dropped.
“Where was he?””
Lena looked at Mia.
Then at the floor.
“He was taken.””
“By who?””
Lena swallowed.
“Marcus.””
Bear closed his eyes.
The anger came slowly.
Not explosive.
Not wild.
Something much more dangerous.
Controlled.
“You’re telling me Marcus had Ryder for twenty years?””
“Yes.””
“And nobody found him?””
“He made sure nobody looked in the right places.””
Bear turned toward Elias.
“You knew.””
Elias nodded.
“I found out later.””
“When?””
“Five years after the crash.””
Bear stared.
“Five years?””
“I was trying to get proof.””
“And you failed.””
Elias looked down.
“Yes.””
The honesty almost made it worse.
Bear walked past him.
“Where is Ryder now?””
Lena and Elias exchanged a look.
That was the moment Bear knew.
There was another secret.
Another thing they weren’t saying.
“Where is he?””
Lena’s voice became quiet.
“We don’t know.””
Bear stopped.
“What?””
“When we escaped, Ryder stayed behind.””
Mia looked up.
“Escaped?””
Lena nodded.
“Your father helped me get away.””
“Then why didn’t he come?””
Lena’s face broke.
“Because he was making sure we could.””
Bear stared at Mia.
She looked like she was trying to understand something too painful for a child.
Bear knelt beside her.
“Mia.””
She looked at him.
“Your father didn’t leave because he wanted to.””
The girl’s eyes filled.
“He promised he would come back.””
Bear swallowed.
“Did he?””
Lena nodded.
“Every day.””
Mia wiped her face.
“Then where is he?””
Nobody answered.
Because nobody knew.
A sound came from outside.
A car door closing.
Everyone froze.
Bear immediately looked toward the garage entrance.
Lena whispered:
“They found us.””
Tasha grabbed Mia.
“Who?””
Lena’s expression changed.
“The people who made sure Ryder disappeared.””
Bear moved to the window.
Outside, two vehicles had stopped near the road.
No headlights.
No movement.
Just waiting.
Bear felt something he hadn’t felt in years.
The old feeling before a fight.
The moment when everything became simple.
Protect the people behind you.
Survive.
He turned.
“Everyone stays here.””
Lena shook her head.
“No.””
Bear looked at her.
“No?””
She stepped closer.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
“Marcus doesn’t send people to scare you.””
Bear stared.
“What does he send?””
Lena looked toward the door.
“People who already know where you’ll run.””
A knock came from outside.
Three times.
Everyone froze.
Bear’s eyes narrowed.
Three knocks.
The old signal.
Again.
But this time, something was different.
Because Bear knew that signal.
Only one person used it.
One person who taught it to the entire club.
Ryder.
Bear moved closer.
“No.””
Elias looked at him.
“What?””
“That knock.””
The door opened slightly.
Nobody touched it.
It opened by itself.
A figure stood outside.
Hidden in the rain.
Bear’s heart stopped.
Because the person standing there was wearing an old black leather vest.
The same style.
The same symbol.
The same faded patch Ryder used to wear.
The figure stepped inside.
Slowly.
The light revealed a face.
Older.
More tired.
Covered with scars.
But alive.
Bear couldn’t breathe.
Mia whispered:
“Daddy?””
The man looked at her.
And tears filled his eyes.
But he didn’t move.
He looked at Bear first.
The two men stared at each other.
Twenty years of pain.
Twenty years of questions.
Twenty years of believing the other was gone.
Finally, the man spoke.
His voice was broken.
But familiar.
“Wolf.””
Bear’s knees almost failed.
Because there was no mistake.
No trick.
No photograph.
No message.
No story.
Ryder was standing in front of him.
Alive.
Then Ryder looked toward the door behind him.
His expression changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
“Lock the door.””
Bear didn’t move.
“Why?””
Ryder looked at Mia.
Then at everyone in the room.
And said the words that changed everything:
“Because Marcus isn’t coming for me.””
May you like
A pause.
“He’s coming because he knows I told Bear the truth.””
