Chapter 7: The Boardroom Betrayal

The hardest battles aren’t fought by people who hate each other.

They’re fought by people who smile across the table while secretly planning your downfall.

For the first time in my life, I walked into a Davenport Holdings board meeting wondering how many people in the room were truly on my side.

That feeling was worse than anger.

Anger was simple.

Anger had direction.

Suspicion was different.

Suspicion made every handshake feel like a question.

The emergency board meeting had been scheduled after we discovered the hidden accounts connected to Adrian. Every director received a secure copy of the evidence.

The fake pregnancy scheme.

The manipulated medical records.

The payments.

The communication between Adrian and Simone.

The attempt to gain control through the family trust.

I expected outrage.

Instead, when I entered the room, I saw hesitation.

That bothered me.

I sat at the head of the table.

“My grandfather built this company on trust,” I said.

“And for a long time, I believed trust meant never questioning the people beside you.””

Nobody spoke.

“But I learned something.””

I looked around the room.

“Trust without accountability is just another way to become vulnerable.””

One of the directors, Robert Ellis, cleared his throat.

“Marcus, everyone understands what happened with Adrian. But we need to be careful about how we proceed.””

I looked at him.

“Careful?””

“Yes. These accusations involve serious people.””

I placed a folder in front of him.

“Serious people who attempted to manipulate company ownership.””

He opened the folder.

His face changed slightly.

Not shocked.

Concerned.

That was the difference.

“You’re worried about the damage to the company,” I said.

Robert looked up.

“I’m worried about the company surviving.””

“So am I.””

I pressed the remote.

The screen behind me displayed the evidence timeline.

Months of preparation.

Months of planning.

Months of Adrian positioning himself closer to power.

“Look at the dates,” I said.

“This started before the engagement.””

A few directors exchanged looks.

Then another board member spoke.

“What are you suggesting?””

“That Adrian wasn’t acting alone.””

The room became quiet.

I saw people shift uncomfortably.

Because everyone knew.

Nobody wanted to say it.

There was still a traitor somewhere inside Davenport.

Then the door opened.

A woman stepped inside.

Everyone turned.

It was Simone.

For a second, nobody moved.

She looked different.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

The confidence she once carried was gone.

“Why is she here?”” Robert asked.

Simone looked directly at me.

“I need to tell the truth.””

I didn’t invite her.

I didn’t trust her.

But I let her speak.

She walked to the center of the room.

“I know what I did was wrong.””

Nobody reacted.

“I lied about the pregnancy. I allowed people to believe something that wasn’t true.””

Her voice shook.

“But I wasn’t the person controlling everything.””

I watched her carefully.

“You expect us to believe that?””

She looked at me.

“No.””

That answer surprised me.

“I don’t expect forgiveness.””

She placed a small envelope on the table.

“I expect you to see the evidence.””

Evelyn picked it up.

Inside were printed messages.

Emails.

Photos.

My eyes narrowed.

“Where did you get these?””

Simone swallowed.

“Adrian.””

The room shifted.

“He kept records of everything,” she continued.

“He said it was protection.””

“Protection?””

“For himself.””

She looked down.

“He never trusted me.””

That almost made me laugh.

Two people who built their relationship on deception had no trust between them.

“What did he plan to do after the wedding?”” I asked.

Simone closed her eyes.

“He planned to make you step away from daily operations.””

“Why?””

“He said you were too emotional.””

The words hit me.

Not because they insulted me.

Because they revealed how Adrian saw me.

A weakness.

A problem to remove.

“He wanted the board to believe you were unstable after the pregnancy loss,” Simone said quietly.

The room went silent.

“He planned to use your grief against you.””

My hands tightened.

A fake tragedy.

A fake child.

A fake future.

All designed to make me surrender my own company.

Then Simone said something I didn’t expect.

“There’s someone else.””

Evelyn looked up.

“Who?””

Simone hesitated.

“The person who introduced Adrian and me.””

My heart sank.

“Who?””

She looked around the room.

Then she said:

“Your cousin.””

Nobody moved.

The name felt impossible.

“Daniel?””

Simone nodded.

Daniel Davenport.

My uncle’s son.

My childhood cousin.

The person who sat at family dinners.

The person who called me brother.

The person who hugged me after my father died.

I stared at her.

“No.””

Simone looked away.

“I’m sorry.””

For the second time in my life, I felt the ground shift beneath me.

Family.

The word used to mean safety.

Now it felt like a door that could hide anything behind it.

Evelyn immediately started gathering information.

But I wasn’t listening anymore.

I was thinking about every conversation with Daniel.

Every time he asked about the company.

Every time he joked that I had all the power.

Every time he said he was proud of me.

I had ignored the bitterness underneath.

Because I wanted to believe family couldn’t hurt you like that.

But history had already proven otherwise.

The meeting ended with one decision.

We would investigate Daniel Davenport.

And this time, I would not wait until betrayal walked into my home.

I would find it before it reached the door.
