Chapter 2: The Secret Hidden Behind the Golden Bird

Malcolm King had learned a long time ago that betrayal rarely arrived wearing a villain’s face.

Sometimes it arrived smiling.

Sometimes it brought flowers.

Sometimes it sat beside you at dinner and called you the love of its life.

By midnight, Aaliyah and Zuri were no longer in the guest wing of the King mansion.

They were inside a secured apartment owned by one of Malcolm’s trusted employees in Manhattan.

Aaliyah sat on the edge of the sofa, holding Zuri against her chest.

She still didn’t understand what was happening.

“Mr. King,” she said carefully.

“Can you please tell me what’s going on?””

Malcolm stood near the window, looking down at the city lights.

His security team had already swept the apartment twice.

Nobody entered without approval.

Nobody left without being tracked.

Aaliyah noticed everything.

She noticed the guards.

She noticed the locked doors.

She noticed the way Malcolm kept checking his phone.

But mostly, she noticed the look in his eyes.

He looked like a man who had just discovered his entire life was built on a lie.

“Your daughter saved me tonight,” Malcolm finally said.

Aaliyah frowned.

“Zuri?””

“Yes.””

“She’s three.””

“I know.””

“She says things sometimes.””

Malcolm turned around.

“But she doesn’t lie.””

Aaliyah looked down at her daughter.

Zuri was asleep now, her tiny hand wrapped around the corner of a blanket.

“She saw Simone leave your office?”” Aaliyah asked.

Malcolm didn’t answer immediately.

That was enough.

Aaliyah swallowed.

“I saw her.””

The words came out quietly.

Malcolm stepped closer.

“What?””

Aaliyah looked away.

“I saw Simone coming out of your office two nights ago.””

The room became still.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Aaliyah’s eyes filled with frustration.

“Because I knew what would happen.””

“What do you mean?””

“I’m a house employee, Mr. King. She was your fiancée.””

She took a breath.

“Who would you believe?””

Malcolm had no answer.

Because he knew.

If Aaliyah had accused Simone without proof, people would have called it jealousy.

A misunderstanding.

A maid trying to create trouble.

“She threatened me,” Aaliyah whispered.

Malcolm’s expression changed.

“What did she say?””

“She told me I should remember my place.””

Aaliyah looked at him.

“She said women like me lost their jobs every day. She said if I repeated what I saw, she could make sure nobody in this city hired me again.””

Malcolm’s jaw tightened.

“And you stayed quiet?””

“I have a daughter.””

Aaliyah’s voice broke slightly.

“I don’t get to be brave when my child’s safety is involved.””

Those words hit Malcolm harder than any accusation.

Because he understood.

Power had protected him his entire life.

But Aaliyah had spent years surviving without it.

He looked at Zuri.

Then back at Aaliyah.

“You did the right thing.””

She looked surprised.

“I did?””

“Yes.””

Malcolm walked to the table and placed a small folder down.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Records.

“What is that?””

“My investigation.””

Aaliyah looked through the papers.

She saw Simone’s passport information.

Her business records.

Her previous addresses.

And then she saw something that made her stop.

“Her name…”

Malcolm nodded.

“Simone Cross isn’t her real story.””

The name Cross carried weight.

Aaliyah had heard it before.

Everyone in New York business circles had.

Curtis Cross.

A ruthless businessman who had controlled several shipping companies decades earlier.

A man connected to corruption scandals.

A man Malcolm had spent years trying to defeat.

“My brother Daniel died because of him,” Malcolm said.

Aaliyah looked up.

Malcolm rarely spoke about his older brother.

“Twenty-two years ago, Daniel discovered a bribery network operating through several ports. He planned to expose it.””

His voice became quieter.

“Three days later, he was killed.””

Aaliyah covered her mouth.

“The police called it an accident.””

Malcolm gave a humorless smile.

“Some accidents are arranged.””

He looked at the documents.

“Curtis Cross disappeared from the public eye afterward. But now his daughter appears, changes her identity, and somehow finds her way into my life.””

Aaliyah understood.

“She wasn’t in love with you.””

“No.””

Malcolm looked toward the city.

“She was hunting something.””

The bronze falcon seal.

The family secret.

The thing that had been protected for generations.

The seal was more than a symbol.

Inside the King archives were original ownership documents connected to the family’s maritime empire.

Four hundred million dollars in assets.

And the seal was required to validate transfers.

Without it, nobody could legally move control of those holdings.

Malcolm returned to the mansion before sunrise.

He didn’t confront Simone.

Not yet.

Instead, he called his oldest security director, Marcus Reed.

“Find the original seal.””

Marcus frowned.

“You think she took it?””

“I think she tried.””

Hours later, the truth appeared under a magnifying lens.

The bronze falcon in the drawer looked perfect.

Too perfect.

The details were slightly wrong.

The weight was different.

The metal composition was wrong.

Marcus looked at Malcolm.

“It’s a copy.””

Malcolm nodded.

“A very good one.””

“Gold-plated lead.””

“Exactly.””

Someone had replaced the real seal.

But they hadn’t succeeded in taking the one thing they needed.

Because Malcolm had always kept the original somewhere else.

A place nobody knew.

Not even Simone.

He opened a hidden compartment inside his office wall.

There it was.

The true bronze falcon.

Old.

Heavy.

Marked with the history of his family.

Malcolm held it carefully.

Then he smiled.

Not because he was happy.

Because he finally understood the game.

Simone thought she had fooled him.

She thought she had already won.

But she had made one mistake.

She underestimated the little girl who saw everything.

And she underestimated the man who had built an empire by knowing when someone was lying.

“Put a tracker in the copy,” Malcolm told Marcus.

Marcus looked surprised.

“You’re giving it back?””

“No.””

Malcolm placed the fake seal into the drawer.

“I’m letting them take it.””

May you like

Because sometimes the best way to catch a thief wasn’t to chase them.

It was to let them run straight into the trap.
