Chapter 9: The Secret I Was Never Meant To Know

The man standing in the street looked exactly like the photographs.

Older.

Slower.

But unmistakable.

My grandfather.

Richard Reed.

The man everyone told me had died before I inherited the company.

The man whose portrait hung in the Reed Corporation headquarters.

The man whose name was carved into the foundation of everything my family built.

But he was standing in front of me.

Alive.

And smiling.

I couldn’t move.

My mind refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.

“No.””

The word came out quietly.

Almost like a question.

Richard tilted his head.

“You always were your father’s son.””

My fists tightened.

“You’re dead.””

He gave a small smile.

“That’s what everyone was supposed to believe.””

The anger came before the shock disappeared.

“You faked your death?””

He looked around the alley.

At the broken buildings.

At the frightened people.

At Amara holding my hand.

“I had no choice.””

I laughed.

A bitter sound.

“No choice?””

I stepped forward.

“You disappeared.””

I pointed toward him.

“You let your own son bury you.””

His expression changed.

For the first time, something like regret appeared.

“Your father made mistakes.””

I froze.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“Don’t.””

My voice sharpened.

“Don’t stand there after twenty years and blame him.””

Richard looked at me calmly.

“You think your father was the victim.””

“Wasn’t he?””

Silence.

That silence was the answer.

I looked around.

At Lena.

At Naomi.

At Adrian.

Everyone had known pieces.

Everyone had carried secrets.

And I was the only person who had lived inside the lie.

Richard stepped closer.

“Marcus, you need to understand something.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“You don’t know what your father did.””

“I know he loved his family.””

Richard’s expression hardened.

“You know what he wanted you to believe.””

The words cut.

Because that was the same thing everyone had been saying.

What you know.

What you believe.

What is true.

I looked at Lena.

She looked terrified.

Not of Richard.

Of what he was about to reveal.

“What did my father do?””

Richard looked at Amara.

Then back at me.

“Your father discovered the truth about Reed Corporation.””

“I already know.””

“No.””

His voice became colder.

“You know Victor stole money.””

A pause.

“You know he tried to control the company.””

Another pause.

“But you don’t know why.””

I stared.

“Why?””

Richard took a breath.

“Because Reed Corporation was never just a company.””

The words sounded ridiculous.

But after everything tonight, I listened.

“What was it?””

“A system.””

I frowned.

“A system?””

Richard nodded.

“Your great-grandfather built it during the worst years of his life.””

He looked at the city around us.

“He believed powerful people always eventually become dangerous.””

“So he created protections.””

“Yes.””

“The hidden account.””

“Yes.””

“The key.””

“Yes.””

I looked at Amara.

“And her.””

Richard’s eyes softened.

“No.””

Everyone became still.

“No?””

He shook his head.

“Amara was never the key.””

My stomach tightened.

“Then what is she?””

Richard looked at my daughter.

“She is the reason the key exists.””

I didn’t understand.

Neither did Amara.

“What does that mean?””

Richard looked at Lena.

“She knows.””

Lena closed her eyes.

“Richard.””

“Tell him.””

Her face filled with pain.

“I can’t.””

“You have to.””

I looked between them.

“Someone explain.””

Lena took a breath.

Then she walked closer.

“When I was pregnant with Amara, your father found something.””

“What?””

“Records.””

“What records?””

She looked at me.

“Birth records.””

I frowned.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

She nodded.

“It didn’t make sense to me either.””

She touched Amara’s pendant.

“Until I learned the truth.””

The city became quiet.

“Marcus, your family has been changing identities for generations.””

I stared.

“What?””

Richard spoke.

“Not identities.””

“Legacies.””

I looked at him.

“You’re saying my family created fake people?””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“We protected people.””

“From who?””

His answer was immediate.

“People like Victor.””

I looked at him.

“Then why did Amara need protection?””

Richard’s face changed.

Because the answer hurt.

“Because your daughter was born with something Victor wanted.””

I felt my anger return.

“What?””

“Your blood.””

Silence.

I almost laughed.

“That’s impossible.””

Richard looked at me.

“Your family has a genetic access system.””

I stared.

“You mean the account?””

“Yes.””

I looked at Amara.

“No.””

Richard nodded.

“The account cannot be opened by a password.””

“Then what?””

“By family lineage.””

The words felt unreal.

“DNA?””

Richard nodded.

“And memory.””

I looked at the pendant.

“That’s why the birthday matters.””

“Yes.””

I felt sick.

“My daughter has been carrying this her whole life.””

Lena whispered:

“I tried to protect her.””

I looked at her.

“You should have told me.””

Tears filled her eyes.

“I tried.””

“When?””

“The night before I disappeared.””

I froze.

“What?””

She nodded.

“I came to your apartment.””

My heart stopped.

“I waited outside.””

A memory appeared.

A night twenty years ago.

Rain against the windows.

My phone ringing.

A message saying Lena had left.

I remembered.

“I never saw you.””

“Because Victor got there first.””

My chest tightened.

“What?””

Lena looked away.

“He told me if I came inside, you would die.””

The words froze me.

“He threatened you?””

“He threatened everyone.””

Richard spoke quietly.

“That was when I realized Victor was no longer trying to steal the company.””

I looked at him.

“What was he trying to do?””

Richard’s expression became dark.

“Destroy the Reed bloodline.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Adrian stepped forward.

“Marcus.””

I looked at him.

He looked broken.

“I need to tell you something.””

I didn’t answer.

He continued anyway.

“Your father didn’t ask me to hide Amara.””

I stared.

“What?””

“He asked me to protect you.””

I felt confused.

“Protect me?””

Adrian nodded.

“The night your father died, he gave me instructions.””

“What instructions?””

Adrian swallowed.

“If anything happened to him, I was supposed to keep you away from Reed Corporation.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because he knew Victor would come after you next.””

I looked at Richard.

Then Adrian.

Then Lena.

“So you lied to me.””

Adrian lowered his head.

“Yes.””

“You let me believe my daughter was dead.””

“Yes.””

My voice became quiet.

“And you expected me to forgive that?””

“No.””

His answer surprised me.

“I never expected forgiveness.””

A long silence followed.

Then Amara spoke.

“Can someone tell me what’s happening?””

Everyone stopped.

She looked at all of us.

“I don’t care about the company.””

Her voice trembled.

“I don’t care about the secrets.””

She looked at Lena.

“I just want to know why everyone left.””

The question destroyed the room.

Lena dropped to her knees.

“I never left you.””

Amara looked at her.

“You weren’t there.””

A painful silence.

Then Lena whispered:

“You’re right.””

She cried.

“I wasn’t.””

I looked away.

Because there was nothing anyone could say to repair that moment.

Then Victor’s voice came from behind us.

“Beautiful.””

Everyone turned.

He stood near the cars.

And this time, he wasn’t alone.

He had people surrounding him.

But he wasn’t looking at me.

He was looking at Richard.

“You really came out of hiding.””

Richard’s expression hardened.

“You should have stayed away.””

Victor smiled.

“I tried.””

He looked at Amara.

“But she made that impossible.””

I stepped forward.

“You’re done.””

Victor laughed.

“No, Marcus.””

He looked at me.

“You still don’t understand.””

“What now?””

Victor lifted a small device in his hand.

A remote.

My heart dropped.

“What is that?””

Victor smiled.

“The reason your father really died.””

Everyone froze.

Richard’s face changed.

“Victor.””

Victor pressed a button.

A sound came from somewhere nearby.

A recording.

My father’s voice.

Older.

Tired.

Afraid.

“If you’re hearing this, then Victor has found the truth.””

My entire body went cold.

My father’s voice continued.

“But there is one thing Marcus must know.””

The recording paused.

Then:

“The child is not the only Reed heir.””

I stopped breathing.

Victor smiled.

Richard looked at me.

Lena covered her mouth.

And my father’s voice delivered the final secret.

“There is another child.””

I looked at Amara.

Then at Victor.

Then at everyone who had spent twenty years hiding the truth.

Because suddenly I understood.

May you like

Amara was never the only secret.

She was only the beginning.
