Chapter 9: The Brother Who Never Died

“Put the phone down.””
Luca's voice was barely above a whisper.
Daniel looked at the screen, then back at his brother.
“Why? She's sleeping.””
He tilted the phone so Luca could see Sophia's face more clearly. The child lay beneath a white blanket, one hand curled beneath her cheek.
A security officer stood outside the bedroom door.
Daniel smiled.
“Your people are good. But they're not as good as mine.””
Marcus raised his hand, signaling the officers behind him to spread out.
Daniel noticed.
“Careful, Marcus. I'd hate for someone to get nervous.””
Luca took one step forward.
“You used my daughter.””
“I protected an investment.””
Luca struck him.
The blow sent Daniel against the wall. His phone fell, skidding across the floor.
Marcus moved to restrain him, but Luca raised a hand.
“No. He's mine.””
Daniel wiped blood from his lip.
Then he laughed.
“There's the Luca I remember. Always ready to hit first and ask questions afterward.””
Luca grabbed his jacket.
“You made me bury you.””
“I made you believe I was dead. There's a difference.””
“You let me grieve you.””
“You were grieving the brother you wanted me to be.””
Luca shoved him against the wall again.
Behind them, Elena struggled to sit up.
“Luca, don't let him provoke you.””
Daniel turned toward her.
“Still giving orders, Elena?””
She flinched.
He smiled.
“You should have signed the documents when I asked. All of this could have been avoided.””
“You stole my child.””
“I preserved her future.””
“You made her afraid of her own father!””
Daniel's smile disappeared.
For the first time, his gaze shifted toward Hannah.
“And you must be the nurse.””
Hannah stepped forward.
“I'm the woman who saved Sophia.””
“Yes. You've caused me an extraordinary amount of trouble.””
He studied her face.
“You should have taken the money when it was offered.””
“I never received an offer.””
“You received a warning.””
Hannah's hands curled into fists.
“You threatened me.””
“I gave you an opportunity to walk away.””
“You sent people after a newborn.””
Daniel sighed.
“People like you insist on making complicated things emotional.””
Hannah moved closer.
“She's three years old.””
“And she's worth more than you could possibly understand.””
Luca slammed Daniel against the wall.
“Finish that sentence, and I'll make sure you never speak again.””
Daniel's expression hardened.
“You still don't understand, do you? Sophia was born during a medical trial that could have changed pediatric rehabilitation forever. The equipment worked.
The data was extraordinary. But the regulators wanted to shut it down before we could complete the study.””
“So you stole children?”” Luca demanded.
“We conducted unauthorized procedures.””
“You kidnapped my daughter!””
“I secured the only evidence that could prove the technology worked.””
Luca stared at him in disgust.
“You could have come to me.””
Daniel laughed.
“You would have destroyed everything. You wanted the company clean. You wanted the family name respected. You wanted to pretend our father built an empire through honest work.””
“And you wanted to keep it dirty.””
“I wanted to keep it alive.””
The two brothers stood inches apart, separated by seven years of lies and a lifetime of resentment.
Then Daniel's gaze moved toward Elena.
“You should ask your wife what she signed before the delivery.””
Luca released him.
Elena went pale.
Hannah turned toward her.
“What does he mean?””
Elena lowered her eyes.
“Daniel gave me a research consent form. He said it was routine paperwork connected to the hospital foundation. I signed it before I knew the full scope of the trial.””
Luca stared at her.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because I didn't know until after Sophia was born. When I discovered the truth, I tried to withdraw my consent.””
“And Daniel took you?””
Elena nodded.
Daniel straightened his jacket.
“She became a liability. I needed her signature on a second document confirming that everything had been voluntary.””
Luca's face tightened.
“You kept her prisoner for three years.””
“I kept her alive.””
“You staged her death.””
“She was going to expose us.””
“You took my daughter.””
“I made certain she survived.””
Luca looked as though he might strike him again.
But Hannah stepped between them.
“Stop.””
Both brothers turned.
Hannah's voice shook with anger.
“You're talking about Sophia as though she's a contract, a research result, or a piece of property. She's a little girl who was taught to fear standing up. She spent years believing her father didn't want her and her mother had abandoned her.””
She pointed at Daniel.
“You don't get to call that protection.””
For a moment, Daniel said nothing.
Then he looked at Hannah with cold contempt.
“You think you're a hero because you pushed a laundry cart through a service door?””
“No.””
Hannah lifted her chin.
“I think I'm the reason your plan failed.””
Daniel's expression changed.
He lunged toward her.
Marcus caught him around the waist, driving him to the floor. Two officers secured his arms while Luca stepped between Daniel and Hannah.
“Get him out of here,” Luca ordered.
Daniel struggled.
“You can't arrest me! You have no idea how many people are involved!””
“Then I'll have plenty of time to learn.””
Daniel twisted his head toward Luca.
“You think this ends with me? The records are incomplete. The recording proves nothing without the original trial files. Half the people named in those documents are dead, and the rest will deny everything.””
Luca looked at the metal case.
“Then we'll find the missing evidence.””
Daniel smiled through clenched teeth.
“You'll never find it.””
Marcus dragged him toward the corridor.
As he passed Hannah, Daniel whispered, “Ask Elena what happened to the nurse who came after you.””
Hannah froze.
Marcus pulled him away.
The door slammed.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Elena began to cry.
Hannah knelt beside her.
“What did he mean?””
Elena covered her face.
“There was another nurse. Rebecca Collins. She worked with Victor. She helped move Sophia before the attack.””
“Where is she?””
“I don't know. After the hospital closed, she disappeared.””
Hannah remembered the silver watch, the pale-blue scrubs, and the woman who had smiled at her while handing over Sophia's chart.
“I saw her that night.””
Elena looked up.
“Did she see you take Sophia?””
“I think so.””
Elena gripped Hannah's hand.
“Then she knows you're the only witness who can identify the people who entered the nursery.””
Luca turned toward Marcus.
“Find Rebecca Collins.””
Marcus checked his phone.
“Already searching. Her employment record ends three years ago. No current address, no active license, no recent financial activity.””
“Keep going.””
Marcus hesitated.
“There's something else. The hospital's archived staff directory lists Rebecca as a temporary nurse, but her credentials were issued through a private agency owned by one of Daniel's companies.””
Luca looked at the recorder.
“Can we recover the missing files?””
Marcus nodded.
“We found a reference to a secure archive stored off-site. The location is listed as a warehouse near the river.””
Daniel's earlier words echoed through the room.
The original trial files.
Luca took Elena's hand.
“We're getting you out of here.””
She nodded weakly.
But as Marcus began helping her from the bed, a sharp alarm sounded from the corridor.
One of the security officers appeared at the door.
“Mr. Moretti, we have a problem.””
Luca turned.
“What now?””
“Victor Sabato is gone.””
Marcus stared.
“How?””
“He was being held in the hotel's private security room. Someone opened the door remotely. The cameras went offline for forty-seven seconds.””
Luca's face hardened.
“Where's Sophia?””
“Safe. The officers assigned to her haven't lost contact.””
Hannah released a breath she hadn't realized she was holding.
Then the officer continued.
“Victor left a message on the security console.””
He handed Luca a phone.
A video began playing.
Victor sat in a parked car beneath a streetlight, his scar above the left eyebrow clearly visible.
“I know you're watching, Luca,” he said.
“And I know Daniel has told you a version of the truth.””
He leaned toward the camera.
“But he hasn't told you who ordered the hospital attack.””
Luca's jaw tightened.
Victor continued.
“You believe Daniel planned everything. He didn't. He was following instructions from someone who knew about Elena's research, someone who knew about the child, and someone who had access to every security system in the hospital.””
Hannah felt cold.
Victor looked directly into the lens.
“The person who gave the final order was not Daniel Moretti.””
He paused.
“It was someone who has been protecting you ever since.””
The video ended.
Luca stared at the blank screen.
Marcus whispered, “Who could have had that kind of access?””
Hannah looked at the hospital corridor, remembering the locked doors, the missing records, and the men who had entered the nursery with precise knowledge of Sophia's location.
Then she remembered the receptionist at the entrance.
The frightened woman who had pressed the remote.
The woman who claimed her son had been threatened.
Hannah turned to Marcus.
“Find the receptionist.””
Marcus checked the security feed.
“She left the building ten minutes ago.””
“What's her name?””
He searched the personnel records.
Then his face changed.
“Denise Washington.””
Hannah stopped breathing.
Denise had been the woman who helped her escape through the laundry exit three years earlier.
The woman who had risked everything to save Sophia.
The woman Hannah had trusted more than anyone that night.
Luca looked at her.
“You said she helped you.””
“She did.””
“Then why would Victor name her?””
Hannah shook her head.
“I don't know.””
Marcus continued scrolling.
“There's no current employment record under that name. But I found an emergency contact associated with the hospital's old staff directory.””
He turned the screen around.
A photograph appeared.
It showed Denise standing beside a teenage Black American boy in front of a brick house.
Beneath the image was a name.
*Malik Washington.*
The boy had grown into a man who now worked as a security contractor for the Moretti family.
Hannah stared at the photograph.
“Denise is Malik's mother.””
Marcus nodded.
“According to this file, she's been receiving monthly payments from an account connected to Daniel's private company for three years.””
Luca's expression hardened.
“Find Malik. Bring him here.””
Hannah felt sick.
The woman who had helped her save Sophia might have been working for the people who stole her.
Or someone might have been using her to keep her silent.
Then Luca's phone rang.
The caller ID displayed Malik's name.
Luca answered.
“Where are you?””
A man's voice came through, shaking with fear.
“Mr. Moretti, I'm sorry.””
“Where are you?””
“I have Sophia.””
Hannah's heart stopped.
Luca gripped the phone.
“What did you say?””
“I didn't mean for this to happen. They took my mother. They said if I didn't bring the girl, they'd kill her.””
Luca's face went white.
“Put Sophia on the phone.””
There was a muffled sound.
Then Sophia began to cry.
“Hannah?””
Hannah lunged toward the phone.
“Baby, I'm here!””
“Please come get me.””
A man's voice interrupted.
“Bring the original records to the old train station by midnight.””
The line crackled.
“If the records aren't there, the girl dies.””
The call ended.
Luca stared at the phone.
Hannah looked at the metal case in Marcus's hands.
The original records.
The missing evidence.
The proof that could destroy the people who had taken Sophia's childhood away.
Now they had a choice.
Save the evidence.
Or save the child.
Luca slowly closed the case.
“We're getting my daughter back.””
Hannah stepped beside him.
“And we're bringing everyone responsible into the light.””
Outside, sirens began to wail in the distance.

But the old hospital's mechanical clock continued ticking.
And somewhere in Chicago, a three-year-old girl who had only just learned to walk was being used as the final bargaining chip in a war her family had started before she was born.
