Chapter 6: The Truth They Buried
Ethan didn’t play the recording immediately.
He sat in his car outside his house and stared at the small device in his hand.
Part of him wanted to hear it.
Another part was afraid.
Because sometimes the truth doesn’t hurt because it surprises you.
It hurts because it confirms what your heart already knew.
He pressed play.
At first, there was only silence.
Then voices.
Vanessa.
And Margaret.
“I can’t keep doing this.””
Vanessa sounded exhausted.
Ethan’s chest tightened.
Margaret answered.
“You need to calm down.””
“She hates me.””
A pause.
“No child hates you.””
“You didn’t see her face.””
Ethan closed his eyes.
Then Margaret spoke.
“She’s attached to Ethan. That’s all.””
“She looks at me like I’m the enemy.””
“Because you let her.””
A long silence followed.
Then Vanessa whispered.
“I shouldn’t have said those things.””
Ethan opened his eyes.
His heart was pounding.
“What things?”” he whispered.
The recording continued.
“I told her Ethan would leave if she kept acting like this.””
Ethan felt sick.
Margaret sighed.
“That was wrong.””
“But it worked.””
The words nearly broke him.
It worked.
His daughter had been afraid because someone wanted her to be.
“She listens now,” Vanessa said.
“She’s quiet.””
Ethan stopped the recording.
He couldn’t hear anymore.
Not yet.
He sat there, gripping the steering wheel.
A thousand thoughts raced through his mind.
The bedtime stories.
The school events.
The mornings Sophie asked if he would be home.
Every moment he thought was normal suddenly looked different.
How many times had his daughter tried to tell him?
How many times had he mistaken fear for shyness?
His phone rang.
Margaret.
He almost ignored it.
Almost.
But he answered.
“What?””
Her voice was softer than usual.
“Ethan.””
“What?””
“I know what you heard.””
His grip tightened.
“How?””
Silence.
Then:
“Because I was there.””
He closed his eyes.
Of course she was.
“How long?””
“Ethan…”
“How long did you know?””
Her breathing changed.
“I knew Vanessa was struggling.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
“I didn’t know she would go that far.””
“You heard her.””
Margaret didn’t answer.
That was enough.
“You heard her tell my daughter I would leave her.””
“I thought I could fix it.””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“You thought you could hide it.””
Margaret started crying.
“I was afraid.””
The honesty surprised him.
“Of what?””
“That everything would fall apart.””
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“It already did.””
After the call ended, he sat there for a long time.
Then he saw Sophie standing outside the house window.
Watching him.
His heart broke again.
He rushed inside.
“What are you doing up?””
She looked nervous.
“I heard you say my name.””
He knelt down.
“Come here.””
She stepped into his arms.
After a moment, she whispered:
“Are you still going to leave?””
Ethan pulled back.
“What?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because Vanessa said when people get tired of me, they leave.””
For a second, he couldn’t speak.
Then he held her face gently.
“Listen to me.””
Sophie looked at him.
“Daddy is not leaving you.””
“Promise?””
“I promise.””
She nodded.
But Ethan knew something.
A promise could heal a wound.
But it couldn’t erase the scar.
And as he held his daughter, he made another promise.
Not to her.
To himself.
He was going to find every piece of the truth.
Every lie.
Every person who helped hide it.
Because Sophie’s voice had been ignored for too long.
May you like
And now that he had finally heard it…
He would make sure nobody ever silenced her again.
