Chapter 9: The Truth About Maya

“Drop it!””

The command came from the staircase.

The officer froze.

A second police officer appeared above them, weapon drawn.

“Put your weapon on the floor.””

The first officer slowly lowered his gun.

Maya buried her face against Evelyn.

Sarah stared at him.

“You're not police.””

The man smiled.

“No.””

He dropped the weapon.

The second officer rushed down and handcuffed him.

“Daniel's men,” he said.

“We've been tracking them for months.””

Evelyn stared.

“How did you know?””

“We intercepted the call.””

Sarah let out a shaky breath.

For the first time all night, the room felt safe.

But only for a moment.

The second officer looked at the files.

“We need to leave.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“Not without those records.””

“You can't take evidence.””

“Then take me with it.””

The officer looked at her.

“You don't understand what you're holding.””

Evelyn pointed to the files.

“My entire life.””

Amara stepped forward.

“And mine.””

Maya quietly said, “And mine.””

The officer looked at her.

Then sighed.

“Five minutes.””

Evelyn returned to the black folder.

She turned another page.

A photograph fell out.

It showed Daniel holding a newborn.

Behind him stood Thomas Whitmore.

And beside Thomas was Elizabeth.

Alive.

Evelyn's breath caught.

“Elizabeth.””

Sarah stepped closer.

“That can't be.””

Evelyn turned the photograph over.

A date.

Six months after Elizabeth's supposed death.

Amara stared.

“That woman is my mother.””

Evelyn nodded.

“Yes.””

Amara's eyes filled.

“She was alive.””

“Apparently.””

“Then why did Daniel tell me she died?””

Evelyn looked at the photograph.

“Because someone wanted you to believe you had no family.””

Amara shook her head.

“No.””

“What?””

“My mother didn't abandon me.””

Evelyn looked at her.

“She tried to find me.””

Sarah stepped closer.

“How do you know?””

Amara pointed at the photograph.

“Look at her hand.””

Elizabeth was holding something.

A tiny silver locket.

The same design.

The same engraved flower.

Evelyn looked at Maya.

Then Amara.

Then the two lockets.

“Your mother gave one to each child.””

Sarah whispered, “A pair.””

Evelyn's heart pounded.

“Why?””

Amara searched the file.

“There.””

A handwritten note.

She read it aloud.

“‘If they separate the girls, the lockets will bring them back together.’”

Maya looked at hers.

“So Mom knew?””

Sarah nodded.

“Someone knew.””

Evelyn turned another page.

A hospital photograph showed two bassinets.

One labeled *WHITMORE*.

The other labeled *BELL*.

But beneath them was a handwritten correction.

*LABELS SWITCHED.*

Evelyn stared.

“The babies were never officially switched.””

Sarah shook her head.

“No.””

“They were labeled incorrectly before the records were created.””

“Yes.””

“Then Daniel didn't steal my daughter.””

Sarah looked at her.

“He stole the truth.””

Evelyn turned toward Maya.

The girl was watching her with wide eyes.

Evelyn crouched.

“Maya.””

“Yes?””

“I need to tell you something.””

Maya waited.

“You are my daughter.””

Maya's eyes filled with tears.

Evelyn reached for her hand.

“I don't know how long it will take before everything is clear. But I know that.””

Maya looked at Sarah.

“Does that mean she's my mom too?””

Sarah smiled through tears.

“Yes.””

Maya looked back at Evelyn.

“Can I call you Mom?””

Evelyn broke.

She pulled Maya into her arms.

“Yes.””

Maya hugged her tightly.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Amara quietly said, “What about me?””

Evelyn released Maya.

She looked at Amara.

“You're family too.””

Amara's eyes filled.

“I don't know what I am.””

“You're Elizabeth's daughter.””

Sarah stepped forward.

“And my responsibility.””

Amara looked at her.

“You really searched for me?””

Sarah nodded.

“I never stopped.””

Amara's expression softened.

Then the second police officer interrupted.

“We found something.””

He held up a sealed envelope.

“It was hidden behind the last cabinet.””

Evelyn took it.

Her name was written on the front.

But beneath it was another name.

*ELIZABETH.*

Evelyn opened it.

Inside was a letter.

She read the first line.

Her face changed.

“What?””

Sarah asked.

Evelyn handed it to her.

Sarah read.

Then sat down.

“What does it say?”” Amara asked.

Sarah couldn't speak.

Evelyn finally whispered:

“Elizabeth wrote this the night the babies were born.””

Maya looked at her.

“What did she say?””

Evelyn turned the page.

There was only one sentence.

*Evelyn, if you are reading this, then Daniel has already told you the wrong baby survived.*

The room went silent.

Amara stared at Maya.

Maya stared back.

And Evelyn slowly turned the letter over.

On the back was a final line.

*The girl you call Maya is not the child Daniel was trying to hide.*

Sarah looked up in horror.

“Then who is she?””

Before anyone could answer, Evelyn's phone buzzed.

A new message appeared.

There was no number.

Only a photograph.

Evelyn opened it.

Her hands began to shake.

The picture showed a woman standing outside a hospital.

A woman who looked exactly like Maya.

Older.

Alive.

And holding a newborn baby.

May you like

Underneath the photograph were six words:

*Your real daughter is still alive.*
