Chapter 8: The Recording That Changed Everything

The screen flickered.

Static filled the abandoned room.

For a moment, there was nothing but darkness.

Then the video appeared.

A hospital corridor.

Eight years earlier.

The timestamp sat in the corner of the screen.

*2:14 A.M.*

I stopped breathing.

Because I knew that night.

The night my life split into two versions.

The one I remembered.

And the one everyone had hidden from me.

The camera angle was terrible.

Old.

Grainy.

But clear enough.

A younger version of myself appeared on the screen.

I was wearing the same hospital gown from my memories.

My hair was messy.

My face was exhausted.

But my eyes…

My eyes looked different.

They weren’t the eyes of a grieving mother.

They were the eyes of someone searching.

Someone who knew something was wrong.

Rachel whispered:

“That’s you.””

I nodded slowly.

I couldn’t speak.

On the screen, I walked down the hallway carrying a small bundle.

A baby.

My baby.

My hands flew to my mouth.

Eli stood beside me, watching the screen with confusion.

He was seeing the moment his own life was stolen.

Daniel stared at the video.

His face was pale.

“What is this?””

Nobody answered.

Because we were all asking the same question.

The camera moved.

Someone followed behind me.

A man.

The person recording.

The angle changed as he stepped closer.

Then he entered the light.

My heart stopped.

My father.

Robert Carter.

My father who died before Eli was born.

My father who I buried while pregnant.

My father who everyone told me would never meet his grandson.

“No.””

The word escaped my mouth.

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I knew it.””

I looked at him.

“You knew?””

His expression broke.

“I suspected.””

“You suspected my father was alive?””

He looked ashamed.

“I saw him once after he disappeared.””

The room went silent.

Rachel turned toward him.

“You never told her?””

Daniel shook his head.

“I couldn’t.””

I stared at him.

“You all keep saying that.””

My voice became sharper.

“I couldn’t tell her.””

I pointed at the screen.

“I couldn’t protect her.””

“I couldn’t risk it.””

“How many more people get to decide what I can handle?””

Nobody answered.

The video continued.

My younger self entered Room 17.

My father followed.

Then another person appeared.

Marcus.

My husband.

My stomach tightened.

The three people who shaped the worst night of my life were standing together.

Alive.

Talking.

Planning.

I turned up the volume.

The audio was weak.

But we could hear.

Marcus’s voice came first.

“You promised me this would stay controlled.””

My father answered.

“You’re the one who rushed everything.””

I froze.

Marcus looked angry.

“I had no choice.””

My younger self stood near the bed, holding Eli.

Then my father stepped closer.

“You made a mistake.””

Marcus’s voice became defensive.

“The baby was never supposed to be involved.””

My heart pounded.

Rachel grabbed the table for support.

Daniel whispered:

“Oh my God.””

On the screen, my younger self turned toward them.

She heard everything.

She knew.

Then she spoke.

“What are you talking about?””

The video shook.

The person recording moved closer.

My father stepped back.

Marcus froze.

My younger self looked between them.

“What does he mean, the baby was never supposed to be involved?””

I felt tears running down my face.

Because I remembered this moment.

Not clearly.

Not completely.

But enough.

The fear.

The confusion.

The betrayal.

Marcus approached me on the screen.

“Elena, listen.””

My younger self backed away.

“No.””

Her voice trembled.

“No, you told me he was dead.””

Marcus said nothing.

“You lied to me.””

Then my father stepped forward.

“Sweetheart, we were trying to protect you.””

The words hit me.

The same words.

Always the same excuse.

Protect you.

My younger self looked at him.

“You knew?””

My father looked away.

That was his confession.

“You knew my baby was alive?””

Silence.

Then the video changed.

A loud noise.

The camera moved.

The person recording hid.

And another person entered.

My mother.

I felt my knees weaken.

There she was.

Alive.

Standing in the room.

My mother looked at me on the screen.

Then at Eli.

Her face was full of pain.

“Please.””

My younger self looked at her.

“You too?””

My mother started crying.

“I’m sorry.””

I covered my mouth.

Because hearing those words from a memory hurt more than hearing them from the living.

My younger self stepped back.

“Everyone knew.””

Her voice broke.

“Everyone except me.””

Nobody in the room spoke.

The video continued.

My mother moved toward me.

“Elena, you have to listen.””

“No.””

My younger self held Eli tighter.

“No one touches him.””

Marcus looked frightened.

“Put the baby down.””

My blood went cold.

My younger self heard it too.

She stared at him.

“Why?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

“Why are you afraid of my son?””

Then something happened.

Something I never remembered.

My younger self turned toward my father.

“You’re all working together.””

My father looked devastated.

“No.””

“Yes.””

She looked around the room.

“My husband.””

“My parents.””

“The hospital.””

She laughed painfully.

“You all decided my life without me.””

Then Marcus moved.

Fast.

He reached toward Eli.

My younger self screamed.

“No!””

The video shook violently.

The camera fell.

For several seconds, all we saw was the floor.

We heard shouting.

A struggle.

Then a sound.

A crash.

I grabbed the wall.

“No.””

Daniel moved closer.

“Elena…”

The audio returned.

A few seconds later.

My younger self was crying.

Holding Eli.

My father was on the floor.

Marcus stood nearby.

And my mother was saying something.

I increased the volume.

Her voice came through.

“He can’t remember this.””

The room froze.

“What?”” Rachel whispered.

My mother continued.

“He’s already too traumatized.””

Marcus answered.

“She’ll never stop looking.””

My father said:

“Then make her stop.””

I felt sick.

The video showed my mother walking toward me.

My younger self looked terrified.

Then the screen cut.

A new file appeared.

*Medical Procedure Log.*

Daniel stepped back.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

His voice was barely audible.

“That’s why you don’t remember.””

I opened the file.

It showed my name.

My medical information.

And a procedure performed after the incident.

A procedure I never agreed to.

My hands shook.

“They erased my memories.””

Nobody corrected me.

Because it was true.

But then I noticed something.

A line at the bottom.

*Procedure unsuccessful. Memory fragments expected to return.*

I looked up.

“Unsuccessful?””

Daniel looked confused.

Then he saw the date.

His face changed.

“What?””

I pointed.

“The procedure happened eight years ago.””

“Yes.””

“But if it was unsuccessful…”

I looked at the video.

At the version of myself who was still fighting.

“Why did they think I forgot?””

Silence.

Then Rachel slowly said:

“Because someone told them you did.””

Everyone turned.

She looked at me.

“Someone inside their group was protecting you.””

My heart raced.

“Who?””

Rachel stared at the screen.

At the person behind the camera.

The person who recorded everything.

Your father.

Daniel shook his head.

“But Robert was part of it.””

“Yes.””

Rachel nodded.

“But maybe he changed his mind.””

I looked back at the video.

My father had risked everything to record the truth.

Then why hide it?

Why let me suffer?

The screen flashed.

A final file appeared.

No date.

No label.

Only one word.

*ELENA.*

I clicked.

The video started.

My father appeared.

Older.

Tired.

Looking directly into the camera.

Not at anyone else.

At me.

“If you’re watching this, then I failed to protect you.””

My heart shattered.

His voice continued.

“But I did one thing right.””

He looked away.

“I saved the evidence.””

A pause.

Then he said:

“Your son was never the only child involved.””

Everyone froze.

“What?””

My father continued.

“Marcus didn’t steal Eli because he wanted your child.””

The screen flickered.

“He stole Eli because Eli was proof.””

A folder appeared on screen.

Medical records.

Multiple names.

Multiple babies.

My father’s final words echoed through Room 17.

“Eli was the first child they tried to erase.””

The video stopped.

The room became silent.

Then Daniel whispered:

“There were others.””

I looked at the files.

The names.

The dates.

The evidence.

And I realized something terrifying.

My son wasn’t the beginning of Marcus’s secret.

He was the mistake that almost exposed it.

Then the door behind us slammed shut.

We turned.

The lights went out.

And from the darkness, a familiar voice spoke.

“Elena.””

My blood froze.

May you like

Marcus.

“You were never supposed to find this room.””
