Chapter 8: The Daughter He Never Knew

The words did not make sense.

Not at first.

They entered the room, but they did not reach Vincent.

Not with the sound of gunfire outside.

Not with the guards moving into position.

Not with the shattered glass covering the floor.

Nothing mattered except the sentence Elena had just spoken.

*Luna is not your only child.*

Vincent stared at her.

The woman he had mourned for twenty years.

The woman he had searched for in every crowd.

The woman whose memory had followed him through every victory and every failure.

Alive.

Standing in front of him.

And destroying the one thing he thought he finally understood.

Luna.

His daughter.

Not his only child.

“What did you say?””

His voice was barely a whisper.

Elena looked at him with tears in her eyes.

“I wanted to tell you.””

“When?””

The question came out sharper than he intended.

“When was the right time?””

Her expression broke.

“There was never a right time.””

A gunshot hit the wall behind them.

Everyone ducked.

Marco shouted orders.

“Move! Secure the room!””

But Vincent didn’t move.

He couldn’t.

Because twenty years of pain had just become a thousand new questions.

“Who?””

Elena looked away.

“Vincent…”

“Who is my other child?””

The room became silent.

Even the guards stopped for a moment.

Luna stood near the stairs, clutching the journal.

She looked between them.

Confused.

Scared.

Trying to understand a world that kept changing around her.

Elena looked at her.

Then back at Vincent.

“Her name is Sofia.””

The name landed quietly.

But it changed everything.

Vincent repeated it.

“Sofia.””

Elena nodded.

“She was born six months before Luna.””

Vincent stared.

“That’s impossible.””

“I know.””

“No.””

His voice hardened.

“No, Elena. I was there.””

She looked at him.

“I know you were.””

“I was there when Luna was born.””

“Yes.””

“And there was one baby.””

Elena closed her eyes.

“Because Sofia was hidden.””

Vincent felt something inside him collapse.

“Why?””

“Because they knew about her.””

“Who?””

“The Order.””

The answer came immediately.

Too immediately.

Like she had been waiting twenty years to say it.

Elena stepped farther into the room.

“The night I gave birth to Luna, they already knew I had another child.””

Vincent looked at her.

“Another child with who?””

The question hurt both of them.

Elena’s eyes softened.

“With you.””

Silence.

The answer was impossible.

And yet, somehow, it explained everything.

Vincent turned away.

He looked at Luna.

Then at Elena.

“You expect me to believe I had another daughter and never knew?””

“I don’t expect you to believe anything.””

Her voice trembled.

“I expect you to hate me.””

Vincent looked back.

“Do you know how many nights I spent blaming myself?””

Elena said nothing.

“How many times I stood in Luna’s empty room?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I know.””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“You don’t.””

Elena lowered her head.

“I watched.””

That stopped him.

“What?””

“I watched you.””

The confession was almost too painful to hear.

“From a distance.””

Vincent froze.

“You were here?””

“Sometimes.””

“Sometimes?””

His anger returned.

“You saw me suffer?””

“I saw you survive.””

“And you did nothing?””

Elena looked at him.

“Because every time I wanted to come back, someone died.””

The room went still.

Vincent’s expression changed.

“What do you mean?””

Elena looked at Samuel.

The older man lowered his eyes.

Vincent noticed.

“You knew.””

Samuel didn’t answer.

“You knew she was alive.””

“Yes.””

“And you said nothing.””

Samuel’s silence was enough.

Vincent laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because the betrayal was becoming too large to feel.

Everyone had protected him.

Everyone had lied to him.

Everyone had decided what he was allowed to know.

Elena stepped closer.

“I was trying to keep you alive.””

“You keep saying that.””

His voice became cold.

“But every person who hides the truth from me says the same thing.””

Elena stopped.

Because she knew he was right.

Another explosion shook the mansion.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Marco rushed back.

“Boss, we need to move now.””

Vincent looked at Elena.

“We’re not done.””

“I know.””

He looked at Luna.

“Can you walk?””

The little girl nodded.

But before they moved, Luna spoke.

“Who is Sofia?””

Everyone turned.

Elena looked heartbroken.

“My daughter.””

Luna looked at Vincent.

“Your daughter?””

Vincent couldn’t answer.

Because he didn’t know how.

He had spent less than a day knowing he had Luna.

Now he was being told there was another girl.

Another daughter.

Another life stolen from him.

Luna looked down.

“Does she know about me?””

Elena’s expression changed.

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because if she knew…”

Elena stopped.

Luna understood.

“Someone would hurt her.””

Elena nodded.

The little girl looked at the floor.

For the first time, Vincent saw something other than fear in her eyes.

He saw sadness.

A child realizing she was not the only person who lost something.

Vincent crouched beside her.

“Luna.””

She looked at him.

“I’m sorry.””

The words surprised her.

“For what?””

He struggled to answer.

For twenty years.

For every birthday.

For every night.

For not finding her.

For not knowing Sofia existed.

For everything.

“I don’t know yet.””

Luna studied him.

Then quietly said:

“My mom told me something.””

“What?””

“She said families aren’t made by finding people.””

She looked at Elena.

“They’re made by choosing them.””

Vincent looked away.

Because a child should not have to understand that.

But Luna did.

They escaped through the underground tunnel beneath the mansion.

A passage Vincent had built years ago.

A secret even most of his guards didn’t know existed.

Elena walked beside him.

For the first time in twenty years.

Close enough that he could hear her breathing.

Close enough that he knew she was real.

But the space between them felt larger than ever.

“What happened to Sofia?””

Elena was quiet.

“She was taken.””

Vincent stopped walking.

“By the Order?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“When she was three.””

His face changed.

“Three years old?””

Elena nodded.

“They wanted leverage.””

“And you?””

“I tried to get her back.””

“Did you?””

Elena looked away.

“No.””

The answer broke something inside him.

“Where is she now?””

Elena swallowed.

“I don’t know.””

The tunnel became silent.

Vincent looked at her.

“You don’t know where my daughter is?””

“I know where she was last seen.””

“Where?””

Elena hesitated.

Then:

“With Adrian Vale.””

Vincent’s expression turned dark.

“The doctor.””

“Yes.””

The pieces began connecting.

Adrian.

The false death certificate.

The missing records.

The secret clinic.

Sofia.

Luna.

The key.

Vincent looked at Elena.

“What was Adrian really doing?””

Elena’s face became pale.

“He wasn’t just a doctor.””

“Then what was he?””

She whispered:

“He was the man who created the program.””

Vincent frowned.

“What program?””

Elena looked at Luna.

Then at him.

“The program that trained children of powerful families to become weapons.””

Nobody spoke.

Vincent felt cold.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“Luna?””

“No.””

Elena immediately shook her head.

“Not Luna.””

Relief came for half a second.

Then fear returned.

“Then who?””

Elena looked at him.

“Sofia.””

The tunnel seemed to disappear.

Vincent gripped the wall.

“My daughter…”

“She was taken because she was older.””

Elena’s voice broke.

“They wanted to shape her.””

A terrible silence followed.

Luna held Vincent’s hand.

He didn’t even realize until then.

He looked down.

She was there.

A daughter he had just found.

Another daughter he had lost.

And an enemy who had taken both.

A phone suddenly rang.

Everyone stopped.

Marco checked his device.

“It’s from an unknown number.””

Vincent held out his hand.

“Give it to me.””

He answered.

For several seconds, there was silence.

Then a young woman spoke.

A voice he had never heard before.

But somehow…

it felt familiar.

“Hello?””

Vincent said nothing.

The woman continued.

“Are you Vincent Moretti?””

His grip tightened.

“Yes.””

A pause.

Then:

“My name is Sofia.””

The world stopped.

“I think…”

Her voice trembled.

“I think you’re my father.””

Vincent couldn’t speak.

Behind him, Elena covered her mouth.

Because she recognized the voice.

Then Sofia whispered:

“But there’s something you need to know.””

Vincent waited.

“I’m not calling because I escaped.””

A pause.

“I’m calling because they sent me.””

The line went quiet.

Then the final words came.

“Dad…”

May you like

Vincent’s blood ran cold.

“They told me to kill you.””
