Chapter 5: The Man Who Came Back for the Dead

The door opened slowly.

Too slowly.

Like whoever stood on the other side wanted us to know they were there.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

The room had changed in a single second.

A hospital room was supposed to be a place of healing.

A place where people survived.

But after everything that happened, it felt like another trap.

Eleanor gripped my hand.

Her fingers were cold.

The shadow in the doorway remained still.

Then Detective Carter stepped forward.

“Who’s there?””

No answer.

The detective reached toward his belt.

“Step away from the door.””

The figure finally moved.

A man stepped into the light.

Not Richard.

A nurse.

Everyone exhaled at once.

“I’m sorry,” she said quickly.

“I didn’t mean to frighten anyone.””

Detective Carter lowered his hand.

“What are you doing here?””

The nurse looked confused.

“I was checking the patient’s chart.””

She looked at Eleanor.

“Mrs. Whitmore, are you feeling all right?””

Nobody answered.

Because the fear in the room wasn’t gone.

It had only changed.

Detective Carter walked to the doorway.

“Where is Mr. Whitmore?””

The nurse frowned.

“Who?””

“Richard Whitmore.””

“I haven’t seen him.””

Carter looked at the security footage again.

The man on the screen had entered this hallway.

But he had disappeared before reaching the room.

A person couldn’t vanish.

Unless someone helped them.

The detective turned toward the nurse.

“Who has access to this floor?””

“Doctors, nurses, authorized visitors.””

“Anyone else?””

She hesitated.

“Maintenance staff.””

My eyes moved toward the hallway.

Maintenance staff.

People who could walk anywhere.

People nobody noticed.

People who could disappear into the background.

Just like me.

Detective Carter immediately called security.

“Lock down this floor.””

The nurse’s face changed.

“Is something wrong?””

“Yes,” he said.

“There is a man who tried to murder his wife.””

The nurse looked at Eleanor.

And for the first time, she seemed to realize the woman in the bed was not a normal patient.

She was the woman who came back from the dead.

While security searched the building, Victoria remained silent.

Too silent.

I watched her.

“You knew he would come.””

She looked at me.

“What?””

“You weren’t surprised when you saw him.””

Victoria looked away.

“I know Richard.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You know something you’re not telling us.””

Eleanor heard me.

“Clara.””

But I couldn’t stop.

Too many secrets had protected Richard.

Too many people had been afraid.

“What happened five years ago?”” I asked Victoria.

Her face tightened.

“Not now.””

“Yes, now.””

Everyone looked at me.

I took a breath.

“Your sister almost died tonight. She was put in a coffin. She woke up because nobody listened to her. And we still don’t know the truth.””

Victoria looked at Eleanor.

A painful expression crossed her face.

Finally, she whispered:

“Five years ago, Richard tried to kill me.””

The room went quiet.

Eleanor stared.

“What?””

Victoria swallowed.

“I found his accounts. I found out he had been stealing money from your family for years.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“I tried.””

“When?””

“The night I disappeared.””

Eleanor looked confused.

“I don’t remember.””

“Because you weren’t supposed to.””

The words made everyone freeze.

Victoria continued.

“I went to the house that night. I planned to tell you everything.””

She looked at me.

“The same house where Clara heard Richard talking.””

My stomach dropped.

“You were there?””

Victoria nodded.

“I was.””

Rain hit the windows harder.

“The argument started in the study. Richard knew I had found out. He told me I didn’t understand what I was dealing with.””

“What did he do?”” Detective Carter asked.

Victoria looked down.

“He locked me inside.””

Eleanor covered her mouth.

“For how long?””

“Almost two days.””

Nobody spoke.

“I escaped through a basement window.””

Victoria touched her wrist.

“That’s how I got this.””

I looked at the scar.

The answer had been there the entire time.

“He told everyone I ran away.””

“Yes.””

“And you let him.””

Victoria looked at Eleanor.

“I had no choice.””

“You always say that.””

“Because it was true.””

Victoria’s voice cracked.

“If I came back, he would have killed you.””

Eleanor looked away.

“Maybe he tried anyway.””

The pain between them was almost unbearable.

Two sisters who had both been victims.

Both betrayed.

Both carrying the same enemy.

Detective Carter interrupted.

“Why come back now?””

Victoria looked at him.

“Because Richard made a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

“He thought Eleanor was dead.””

Carter frowned.

“That doesn’t answer the question.””

Victoria reached into her pocket.

She pulled out a small envelope.

Everyone froze.

Another envelope.

But this one was different.

Older.

Damaged.

“I found this after Richard left the station.””

Eleanor stared.

“Where?””

“In his car.””

Detective Carter immediately held out his hand.

“You searched his car?””

Victoria didn’t answer.

The detective took the envelope.

“Why didn’t you give this to police?””

Victoria looked uncomfortable.

“Because I wanted to know if it was real.””

“What is it?””

Victoria looked at Eleanor.

“The letter from your mother.””

The room went silent.

“The one that disappeared?””

Victoria nodded.

“I found it.””

Detective Carter carefully opened it.

Inside was a single folded piece of paper.

Everyone gathered closer.

He began reading.

At first, his expression didn’t change.

Then it did.

Confusion.

Then shock.

“What does it say?”” Eleanor asked.

The detective looked at her.

“It mentions Richard.””

Eleanor’s face hardened.

“Read it.””

Carter hesitated.

Then he continued.

“Eleanor, if you are reading this, then I was unable to protect you myself.””

The room became completely silent.

“My daughter, you have trusted people too easily. Especially those who know exactly what you want to believe.””

Eleanor’s eyes filled with tears.

Her mother’s words.

Words she never got to hear.

Carter continued.

“There is one person who has been lying to you for years.””

Everyone looked at Victoria.

But the detective didn’t stop.

“His name is Richard Whitmore.””

Eleanor closed her eyes.

She already knew.

But hearing it from her mother made it real.

The detective read the next line.

“However, Richard is not the only person involved.””

Everyone froze.

“What?”” I whispered.

Carter looked at the letter.

“There is another name.””

“Who?””

The detective slowly turned the page.

His expression changed.

And then he said:

“The letter says the person helping Richard is someone inside the Whitmore house.””

My heart sank.

Inside the house.

Someone close.

Someone who knew Eleanor.

Someone who had access to everything.

The detective continued reading.

“It says: Do not trust the person who serves you.””

The room went silent.

I felt every eye turn toward me.

Because there was only one maid in the Whitmore house.

Me.

“No,” Eleanor said immediately.

Her voice was weak but firm.

“She is not involved.””

Detective Carter looked at the letter.

“Mrs. Whitmore, your mother wrote this before Clara ever worked for you.””

I froze.

“What?””

Eleanor looked at me.

And I knew from her expression.

She was surprised too.

Detective Carter read the final lines.

“Richard does not act alone. He has someone who has been close to this family for years.””

The paper shook slightly in his hand.

Then he read the last sentence.

“The person you trust most is the person who helped him bury the truth.””

Nobody spoke.

The silence felt unbearable.

Because everyone in that room had secrets.

Everyone had reasons.

Everyone had something to hide.

Then my phone buzzed.

The sound made everyone jump.

I looked down.

A message.

From an unknown number.

One sentence.

My blood ran cold.

Because I knew the sender.

The woman who had called me.

Victoria looked at my phone.

“What is it?””

I couldn’t answer.

Detective Carter took a step closer.

“Clara?””

I turned the screen toward them.

The message said:

*Ask Eleanor why she hired you five years ago. She knows who you really are.*

I looked at Eleanor.

She was staring at me.

And the fear in her eyes was not because of Richard.

It was because of the message.

May you like

Because somehow…

Eleanor already knew what it meant.
