Chapter 7: The Woman Who Knew About the Murder

“Put the gun down, Claire.””

Daniel’s voice was steady, but his eyes never left the weapon in his wife’s hand.

Claire stood at the top of the basement stairs, dressed in a black coat over her emerald gala gown. Her hair had come loose around her face, and the diamond necklace she had worn the night before was gone. In its place, she wore an expression Amara had never seen before.

Not anger.

Not arrogance.

Desperation.

“You should have stayed at the bank,” Claire said.

“You were so close to having a perfectly respectable life.””

Daniel took one slow step toward the stairs.

“You broke into this house.””

“It belongs to your family.””

“You disappeared from a guarded room, stole documents, and brought a gun to a property you haven't visited in years. Don't tell me about respectability.””

Claire's mouth tightened.

“Give me the folder, Amara.””

Amara pressed the maternity records against her chest.

“No.””

The word surprised everyone, including Amara herself.

Claire raised the pistol slightly.

“Do you understand what you're holding?””

“Records about my birth.””

“Records that could destroy you.””

Amara looked down at the name written across the application.

Thomas Whitmore.

The man identified as her father had been dead for years. She had never met him. She had never heard her mother speak his name.

Yet somehow, her entire life had been shaped by a family she had never known.

“You said my mother was hired to hide a murder,” Amara said.

“Whose murder?””

Claire smiled without warmth.

“Your mother's.””

The room seemed to contract.

Daniel stepped between Claire and Amara.

“That's enough.””

“Move, Daniel.””

“No.””

“You don't understand what your father did.””

“Then explain it.””

Claire laughed bitterly.

“Your father spent his entire life buying silence. He paid politicians, buried scandals, and ruined anyone who threatened his reputation. When Sarah discovered what he was doing, he made her disappear.””

Richard's face hardened.

“That is a lie.””

“Is it?”” Claire snapped.

“Then tell them why Sarah left New York with a newborn and never came back. Tell them why her medical records were sealed. Tell them why your precious father paid a private investigator to follow her for years.””

Richard said nothing.

Amara stared at him.

“You knew she was being followed?””

“I knew someone was looking for her,” Richard answered.

“I didn't know who had ordered it.””

“And you never told her?””

“I tried to warn her. She refused to speak to me.””

Claire took another step down.

“Because she knew what would happen if she did.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“What exactly are you accusing my father of?””

Claire looked at him for a long moment.

Then she opened the envelope in her left hand and pulled out a photograph.

She held it toward Daniel.

It showed a man lying on the floor of an office, blood darkening the front of his shirt. A broken glass lay near his outstretched hand.

Daniel recognized the room.

It was his father's private office at Whitmore Industries.

He also recognized the man on the floor.

Martin Hayes.

The accountant who had supposedly disappeared after his father's death.

Amara felt her stomach twist.

“Is he dead?”” she whispered.

Claire shrugged.

“He was when the photograph was taken.””

Daniel looked sick.

“Where did you get this?””

“From the person who paid to make the problem disappear.””

“Who?””

Claire's eyes flicked toward Richard.

“He knows.””

Richard took a step forward.

“Claire, put the gun down. You have no idea how much danger you're in.””

She laughed.

“I'm in danger? I've spent years cleaning up the mess this family created.””

“You've been stealing from them.””

“I was taking what I was owed!””

The shout echoed through the basement.

For a moment, Claire seemed to regret saying it.

Daniel seized the opening.

“What were you owed?””

She looked at him, breathing hard.

“My father lost everything because of yours. Our family was ruined while your father built an empire. Thomas promised to make things right, but he died before he could finish what he started.””

“Thomas was a criminal.””

“So was your father!””

Daniel flinched.

Claire lowered the photograph.

“You think he was some innocent businessman? He discovered that Thomas was moving money through the foundation. Instead of reporting him, he made a deal. He wanted control of everything, and he was willing to destroy his own brother to get it.””

Richard shook his head.

“Your father discovered the transfers and tried to stop them. Thomas was the one who threatened Sarah.””

“Then why did Sarah disappear?””

“Because Thomas threatened her child.””

Amara's grip tightened around the folder.

Claire's expression shifted.

For the first time, she seemed uncertain.

Richard continued.

“Sarah discovered that Thomas had falsified the birth records. He intended to use the child to force Evelyn to sign over part of the family trust. When Sarah refused, he threatened to accuse her of kidnapping her own baby.””

Amara stared at him.

“Why would he do that?””

“Because the trust had a provision protecting the interests of certain descendants. If the child's parentage were established, Thomas could lose access to a substantial portion of the estate.””

Daniel looked at the birth certificate again.

“You're saying Thomas was Amara's father?””

“I'm saying the documents suggest that possibility. We still need DNA evidence and independent verification.””

Claire suddenly laughed.

“You're all missing the point.””

She descended the final steps.

“Sarah didn't just run away. She took something with her. Something your father desperately wanted back.””

“What?”” Daniel demanded.

Claire lifted the envelope.

“The original ledger.””

Richard went pale.

“That ledger was destroyed.””

“That's what you were told.””

Claire reached inside her coat and removed a small black notebook.

Amara recognized the embossed initials on its cover.

W.W.

Her grandfather's name.

Daniel took a step forward.

“Where did you get that?””

“From Evelyn.””

“No,” Richard said immediately.

“Evelyn would never give you that.””

“She didn't know what it was.””

Claire's voice softened with sudden satisfaction.

“Your mother kept it hidden for years. I found it in her bedroom after she started losing her memory. She thought it was an old address book.””

Daniel looked horrified.

“You searched my mother's belongings?””

“I searched for the truth.””

“You stole from her.””

“I protected myself.””

Claire raised the gun again.

“Now give me the folder.””

Amara glanced toward the narrow basement window. Beyond it, she could see the headlights of a car pulling into the street.

Police.

She needed to keep Claire talking until they reached the house.

“Why are you so afraid of the records?”” Amara asked.

Claire's gaze snapped toward her.

“Because you don't understand what they mean.””

“Then tell me.””

“You were never supposed to exist in this family.””

The words struck harder than the threat.

Amara felt as if someone had reached inside her chest and torn away the ground beneath her feet.

Claire continued.

“Your mother was supposed to give up the baby. Thomas arranged everything. He promised Sarah money, a new identity, and a life away from the Whitmores. But she changed her mind.””

“Why?””

“Because she loved you.””

For the first time, Claire's voice cracked.

“She ran. And when Thomas found out, he blamed your father for helping her. Everything that happened afterward began with that betrayal.””

Richard moved closer to the wall.

Claire noticed.

“Don't even think about it.””

He stopped.

Daniel kept his hands visible.

“Claire, this ends now. Put the gun down.””

She looked at him with an expression that almost resembled grief.

“I loved you.””

Daniel's face hardened.

“You threatened my mother. You stole her money. You used me to gain control of the company.””

“I did what I had to do.””

“No. You did what you wanted.””

A siren sounded outside.

Claire's head turned sharply toward the stairs.

Daniel saw his chance.

He lunged.

The gun fired.

The sound exploded through the basement.

Amara dropped behind the filing cabinet as Daniel crashed into Claire. The pistol skidded across the floor, striking the wall.

Richard seized Claire's wrist while Daniel pinned her arms behind her back.

“Let me go!”” she screamed.

“You have no idea what you've done!””

Amara crawled toward the gun and kicked it beneath the desk.

Footsteps thundered overhead.

Police officers poured into the basement, ordering everyone to remain still.

Within seconds, Claire was handcuffed.

She twisted toward Amara as an officer led her away.

“You think this is over?”” she shouted.

“Ask Evelyn what happened the night Thomas died! Ask her what she did to save you!””

Amara froze.

Daniel stared after his wife.

Then he turned to Richard.

“What did she mean?””

Richard looked toward the staircase.

His face had gone completely white.

May you like

“I think,” he said slowly, “we need to speak to your mother.””

Because the woman who had spent twenty-six years protecting Amara might have been hiding something even she was afraid to remember.
