Chapter 8 - LEO STOPPED FLINCHING WHEN OFFICERS WALKED PAST

Leo stayed.
For a while everyone assumed he would transfer.
He requested not to.
“Why?”
His platoon leader asked.
“This is where it happened.”
“And?”
“I don’t want that to be only thing this place is.”
Good.
He started therapy.
No shame.
He still flinched when senior officers raised voice.
Then gradually less.
A new battalion commander held meeting.
No speeches about family.
No “we’re all one team.”
He said:
“If anyone asks you for money tied to career opportunity, report it.”
Simple.
Then:
“If somebody tells you loyalty means silence, they’re wrong.”
Then:
“And if I violate that, report me too.”
That mattered.
Brenda stayed in kitchen.
She became famous online? Better not. No viral spectacle needed.
She received recognition for preserving evidence.
She hated ceremony.
Said:
“I had soup to make.”
Good.
Then Leo returned water bottle to same mess hall months later.
Dropped it accidentally again.
Plastic crack.
Entire body froze.
A sergeant looked.
Then said:
“Pick it up when you get chance.”
That was all.
Leo laughed from relief.
Small.
Then Elena returned for follow-up inspection.
Now in full uniform from beginning.
Leo saw.
Saluted.
She returned.
Then:
“How are you?”
“Better, ma’am.”
“Still dropping things?”
He smiled.
“Apparently.”
Then he asked:
“Did Sterling’s career end?”
Elena did not answer gossip-style.
“He was held accountable through process.”
Later public records would show dismissal/confinement? Since story can conclude.
Eventually military court found him guilty on multiple financial and maltreatment-related charges.
He was dismissed from service and sentenced to confinement/restitution.
Not because he shoved a colonel.
Because evidence established broader offenses.
Important.
Then Leo:
“People keep saying you ended him.”
Elena frowned.
“I didn’t.”
“You caught him.”
“Many people did.”
Brenda.
Hayes.
Reese.
Accountants.
Investigators.
Leo.
Even Sterling himself.
Then:
“And he made choices.”
Yes.
No hero mythology.
Then Leo asked:
“Would anyone have believed us if you weren’t colonel?”
Elena paused.
That was harder.
“They should have.”
“Would they?”
“I don’t know.”
Honest.
May you like
Then:
“That is why system needed fixing.”
