Chapter 10: The Photograph That Changed Everything
Camila rolled down the passenger window.
"Get in, Valeria. Now.""
I stood beneath the chapel's broken entrance, staring at the photograph in her hand.
My mother.
Richard Bennett.
And a newborn baby wrapped in a white blanket.
Me.
"Where did you get that?"" I demanded.
"From Daniel.""
"You're working with him?""
Camila glanced toward the black car parked across the street.
"Not anymore.""
I looked at the hospital message on my phone.
Room 608.
Ten minutes.
Then I looked back at Camila.
"Why shouldn't I go?""
"Because Alejandro is waiting for you.""
My stomach tightened.
"How do you know?""
"Because I heard him talking to Daniel. He wants you to sign something.""
"What?""
"The transfer of the land.""
I stepped closer.
"Why would he need my signature if he already has a forged one?""
Camila's expression changed.
"Because the original trust has a condition. Both beneficiaries must personally approve the final transfer.""
"Sebastian and me.""
She nodded.
"Sebastian has already signed. You're the only person left.""
I opened the car door.
"Then let's go to the hospital.""
Camila shook her head.
"Not yet. There's something you need to see.""
She handed me the photograph.
On the back was a handwritten date.
The day I was born.
Beneath it, someone had written:
Richard's daughter. Daniel's secret. Elena's promise.
I looked up.
"What does this mean?""
Camila started the engine.
"It means your mother knew the truth from the beginning.""
We drove to a small apartment near the city center.
Camila unlocked the door and led me inside.
The place smelled of stale coffee and cigarette smoke. A suitcase lay open on the sofa, and several documents were scattered across the kitchen counter.
She locked the door behind us.
"Sit down.""
"I'd rather stand.""
She nodded.
"Fair enough.""
She removed a small envelope from her handbag.
"Grace gave me this the day before she died.""
I took it.
Inside was a memory card and a handwritten note.
If anything happens to me, give this to Valeria. Not Arthur. Not Daniel. Her.
My hands trembled.
"Why didn't you give it to me earlier?""
Camila looked down.
"Because Alejandro found out I had it. He threatened my brother. Then he told me Grace had died because she was careless.""
"And you believed him?""
"I wanted to believe him. It was easier than admitting what I had helped him do.""
She sat on the edge of the sofa.
"I started working with Alejandro two years ago. He told me Bennett International was being stolen from by Arthur and Grace. He said he needed someone inside the company to help expose them.""
"That was a lie.""
"Yes. I discovered that when I found the payment records.""
She touched the bracelet on her wrist.
"I should have taken it off.""
I looked at the diamond bracelet.
"You should have returned it.""
"I know.""
For once, she didn't offer an excuse.
She simply removed it and placed it on the table.
Then she opened her laptop.
"There's something on this memory card.""
The screen displayed a video file.
Grace appeared.
She was sitting in a parked car, speaking quietly.
"Valeria, if you're watching this, I'm sorry.""
My throat tightened.
"I know you probably have a thousand questions. I do too. But there's one thing I need you to understand.""
Grace looked over her shoulder.
"Your mother knew Richard was your biological father. She also knew Daniel wasn't.""
I covered my mouth.
Grace continued.
"Richard was married when he fell in love with Elena. He promised to leave his wife. He never did. When you were born, he wanted to claim you, but your grandfather threatened to expose everything.""
The video paused briefly.
Then Grace continued.
"Daniel agreed to raise you as his daughter because he loved your mother. But Richard never accepted losing control of the family.""
I stared at the screen.
My whole life, I had believed Daniel had abandoned me.
But he had been the man who chose to raise me.
And the man whose name appeared on my childhood birthday cards.
Grace leaned closer.
"There's something else. Richard didn't die twelve years ago.""
Camila whispered, "I knew it.""
The video continued.
"He faked his death to escape a criminal investigation. He used Sebastian as his replacement inside the company, promising him the inheritance.""
I thought of Sebastian's anger.
His resentment.
His belief that everything had been stolen from him.
"Grace knew?"" I whispered.
Camila nodded.
"She discovered it shortly before she died.""
On the screen, Grace took a deep breath.
"Valeria, Richard has been using your identity to move money for years. But he isn't doing it alone.""
She looked directly into the camera.
"The person helping him is Arthur Bennett.""
The video ended.
I stared at the blank screen.
"No.""
Camila folded her arms.
"I told you not to trust him.""
I shook my head.
"Arthur lost his daughter.""
"Maybe.""
"Why would he help kill her?""
Camila looked at me.
"Because he didn't lose Grace the way you think.""
She opened another file.
A photograph appeared.
Arthur and Richard stood together outside a private hospital.
Between them was a document.
A medical certificate.
I read the name.
Richard Bennett.
Date of death: Twelve years earlier.
But the photograph was dated six months ago.
I stepped back.
"He's alive.""
Camila nodded.
"And Arthur has been helping him.""
My phone vibrated.
An incoming call.
Arthur.
I stared at the screen.
Then answered.
"Where are you?"" he demanded.
"Somewhere safe.""
"Valeria, listen to me. Daniel is dangerous. Do not go near that hospital.""
I looked at Camila.
"Why?""
"Because he is lying to you.""
"About what?""
Arthur's voice softened.
"Your mother. Your inheritance. Everything.""
I swallowed.
"Did you know Richard was alive?""
Silence.
Then Arthur said quietly:
"Who told you that?""
I closed my eyes.
That was all the confirmation I needed.
"Grace knew," I whispered.
Arthur's breathing changed.
"Valeria, I can explain.""
"No. You've had twelve years to explain.""
"Please. Don't make a decision based on a video.""
I ended the call.
Camila stood.
"We need to leave.""
"Where?""
"To see Richard.""
I stared at her.
"Why would I go looking for the man who has been manipulating my family since before I was born?""
"Because he's the only person who can explain why he chose you.""
She opened her handbag and removed another photograph.
This one showed Richard sitting at a dining table.
Beside him was a little girl.
A child with my mother's eyes.
On the back was a date.
Three months ago.
And a message.
*MY DAUGHTER DESERVES TO KNOW THE TRUTH.*
I looked at Camila.
"Where is he?""
She gave me an address.
Then she added something that made my blood run cold.
"He's been living in the same house where Alejandro first met you.""
The house where my marriage began.
The house where my life had been planned before I even knew it.
And suddenly, I understood.
May you like
My story with Alejandro hadn't started with a proposal.
It had started with a decision made by men who believed they owned me.
