Chapter 11: The Woman Who Held the Pen
Vanessa called back six minutes later.
This time, I answered on speaker with Detective Mitchell listening beside me.
“Tell me everything,” I said.
Vanessa's breathing was ragged.
“Marcus, I know how this sounds.””
“Then stop telling me how it sounds and tell me what happened.””
“I was at the hospital because my father asked me to come.””
“Why?””
“He said Emily had requested to see me.””
I stared at the wall.
“You'd never met Emily.””
“I had.””
The words came so quietly I almost missed them.
“When?””
“Before you and I met. I worked at Northstar for several months. Emily was investigating the financial records, and I was assigned to review some of the operational reports.””
“You told me you didn't know her.””
“I lied.””
“Why?””
“Because she asked me to keep her identity secret.””
I pressed my fingers against my forehead.
“Vanessa, you can't keep giving me one piece of the truth at a time.””
“I know.””
“No, you don't. Every time I think I've reached the bottom of this, another secret appears.””
She began crying again.
“I was twenty-six when I met Emily. She knew my father was involved with Adrian's company, but she didn't know how much I knew. I helped her copy some financial records. Then my father found out.””
“What did he do?””
“He threatened to have me arrested for stealing confidential documents. He said he'd make sure I never worked in medicine again.””
“Your father was a doctor. Why would he have that kind of power?””
“Because he wasn't just a doctor, Marcus. He was the medical director for one of Northstar's partner organizations. He approved patient referrals and controlled access to certain records.””
I glanced at Detective Mitchell.
She was writing quickly.
Vanessa continued.
“When Emily was admitted to the hospital, my father called me. He said she was confused and that she wanted to see someone she trusted. I went because I thought I could help.””
“Did you see Emily?””
“Yes.””
“Was she conscious?””
A long silence followed.
“Sometimes. She was frightened, but she knew who I was.””
“What did she say?””
“She told me the original records were hidden in a storage unit. She said if anything happened to her, I had to make sure Maya was protected.””
My throat tightened.
“Did she say anything about me?””
“Yes.””
“What?””
“She said you were the only person who could expose the truth, but you couldn't be allowed to find out about Thomas until the evidence was secure.””
I closed my eyes.
“And the form?””
Vanessa drew a shaky breath.
“My father told me Emily had to be transferred to another facility. He said the hospital couldn't keep her there because the situation had become dangerous.””
“Was she alive?””
“Yes.””
The word landed with devastating force.
“Then why did everyone tell me she was dead?””
“I don't know all the details. My father told me she had died during the transfer. He said the paperwork had to be completed immediately.””
“And you believed him?””
“I was afraid.””
“You handed him the pen.””
“Yes.””
“Did you see him sign my name?””
“No. He told me you had already authorized the transfer. He said the form was just a routine confirmation.””
I gripped the edge of the table.
“Why was my signature forged?””
“I don't know.””
“Where did Emily go?””
“I never found out.””
“Then why did you destroy her photographs?””
Vanessa went silent.
I could hear traffic in the background.
Finally, she whispered, “Because one of them showed the person who helped Emily disappear.””
My heart began pounding.
“Who?””
“I can't tell you over the phone.””
“Vanessa, I'm running out of patience.””
“I know. But if I say the name and the call is being monitored, that person will know I talked.””
Detective Mitchell motioned for me to keep her speaking.
I took a slow breath.
“Where are you?””
“I'm in a motel outside the city.””
“Send me the address.””
“No. I need you to meet me.””
“Absolutely not.””
“Marcus, please. I have something you need to see.””
“What?””
“The original hospital release form.””
I stared at Detective Mitchell.
She leaned toward the phone.
“Vanessa Reed, this is Detective Laura Mitchell. If you possess evidence connected to a suspected crime, you need to preserve it and arrange to hand it over safely. Do not attempt to move it or alter it.””
Vanessa gasped.
“You're there?””
“Yes.””
“Then you need to listen. My father has people watching the clinic. Ethan has been following Evelyn. And Adrian knows about the storage unit.””
Mitchell's expression sharpened.
“Why is Adrian interested in the unit?””
“Because the original document is there.””
“What document?””
“The transfer authorization. The one that proves Emily didn't die in the hospital.””
I stopped breathing.
“Vanessa, what are you saying?””
She sobbed.
“Emily was alive when they moved her.””
The room seemed to tilt.
I gripped the phone with both hands.
“Where did they take her?””
“I don't know. My father said she died two hours later. But I never saw a death certificate that matched the hospital's original records.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because I believed my father. And because I was afraid that if I told you, he'd take Maya away from us.””
I recoiled at the phrase.
“Us?””
“I wanted to be her mother, Marcus. I wanted to be part of your family.””
“Then why did you make Maya feel like she had to forget her real mother?””
Vanessa's sobs grew louder.
“Because I was jealous. Because every time she looked at Emily's photographs, I felt like I would never belong. I told myself I was helping her move forward. I knew it was wrong, and I did it anyway.””
For the first time, her answer sounded like the truth.
It didn't excuse what she'd done.
But it explained the cruelty without disguising it as love.
“I can't forgive you for that,” I said.
“I know.””
“And I won't let you near Maya until I know she's safe.””
“I understand.””
I swallowed.
“But if you have evidence that could tell me what happened to Emily, I need you to give it to the police.””
“I will.””
“Where are you?””
She gave Detective Mitchell the motel address.
Mitchell immediately arranged for officers to secure the location and transport Vanessa to a safe interview room.
Before the call ended, Vanessa spoke again.
“Marcus?””
“What?””
“There was someone else in Emily's hospital room. Someone who came after my father left.””
“Who?””
She hesitated.
“Your brother.””
I felt my heart stop.
“Jonathan?””
“Yes.””
“What did he do?””
“He took something from Emily's bedside table. Then he told her he would come back for her.””
“And did he?””
Vanessa's voice cracked.
“I don't know.””
The line went silent.
Detective Mitchell ended the call and immediately began coordinating the response.
Within twenty minutes, officers were on their way to the motel.
Daniel arrived at the clinic shortly afterward, carrying the old wooden box and the notebook from my father's house.
He took one look at my face.
“What happened?””
I told him.
When I finished, he sat down heavily.
“Emily may have survived the hospital.””
I nodded.
“And Jonathan was there.””
“Yes.””
Daniel stared at the floor.
“Then we need to find him before Adrian does.””
Detective Mitchell returned with an update.
“Vanessa has been located. Officers are escorting her to a secure interview site. She has agreed to surrender the original form.””
“Can we get a copy now?””
“She says she'll hand it over in person.””
I looked at the clock.
Every minute felt like another door closing.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message from Jonathan.
Don't trust Vanessa. She knows where Emily was taken.
I typed back.
She says you were in the hospital room.
His reply came immediately.
I was.
She says you promised to come back for Emily.
No response.
I called him.
He answered on the fourth ring.
“Jonathan, did Emily survive?””
Silence.
“Answer me.””
“Yes.””
I closed my eyes.
“Where is she?””
“I don't know where she is now.””
“You just said she survived.””
“She was alive when I left the hospital. I tried to get her out, but your father—”
“Arthur?””
“No. Thomas.””
I gripped the phone.
“What did Thomas do?””
“He arranged the transfer. He told the doctors Emily needed specialized treatment, but the destination on the paperwork was false.””
“Then how do you know she survived?””
“Because I saw her open her eyes.””
My vision blurred.
“Did you speak to her?””
“Yes.””
“What did she say?””
Jonathan's voice broke.
“She asked me to find you. She said there was something she had to tell you before anyone else did.””
“What?””
He hesitated.
Then he whispered, “She said Maya wasn't the only child whose life depended on the truth.””
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Daniel leaned forward.
“What did he say?””
I couldn't answer immediately.
My mind was racing through every clue: the false transfer, the hidden records, the genetic report, the photographs Vanessa had destroyed.
Then Detective Mitchell returned carrying a sealed evidence bag.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
The original hospital release form.
My name was signed at the bottom.
But beneath it, in small handwriting, someone had added a note that had never appeared in the archived copy.
*Transfer approved by biological next of kin: Thomas Cole.*
I stared at the words.
Thomas Cole had been my biological father.
But he wasn't the only person listed on the form.
Below his name was another signature.
One I recognized immediately.
Arthur Bennett.
My adoptive father had signed the authorization, too.
And suddenly, I understood why Emily had written that my father knew the truth.
Both men had been involved in the decision to move her.
May you like
The question was whether they'd been trying to save her.
Or silence her.
