Chapter 13: The Heiress Nobody Saw Coming
I stared at the photograph until the edges blurred.
Isabella stood outside the ballroom where my life had begun to collapse six months earlier. Her expression was calm, almost unreadable. Behind her, a man held a gun against her back.
The message beneath the photograph contained seven words.
*Your grandfather's real heir is in danger.*
I immediately called the number.
It rang once.
Then a familiar voice answered.
"Hello, Ethan.""
"Edward?""
A quiet laugh.
"Not quite.""
My blood ran cold.
"Who is this?""
"Someone who has been watching your family make the same mistakes for generations.""
I looked at the document in my hand.
"Where is Isabella?""
"Safe, for the moment.""
"Tell me what you want.""
"The original agreement. Bring it to the ballroom.""
I glanced at Detective Harris, who was listening to the call through his headset.
"Edward is already in custody.""
The voice laughed again.
"Do you really think Edward was the one giving orders?""
I turned toward the room where Edward was being guarded.
He was watching me.
And he was smiling.
The voice continued.
"Your uncle was useful, Ethan. But he was never the architect.""
"Who are you?""
"Bring the agreement. Come alone. And don't make me repeat myself.""
The call ended.
I looked at Detective Harris.
"Trace it.""
He nodded to an officer.
"Already trying.""
My father stepped closer.
"Don't go.""
I looked at him.
"She's in danger.""
"We'll get her out.""
"Then tell me who is behind this.""
He glanced at the agreement.
"I don't know.""
Daniel suddenly spoke.
"Yes, you do.""
Everyone turned.
He was holding another sheet from the scattered documents.
At the top was a name.
*MORRISON FAMILY TRUST — BENEFICIAL OWNERSHIP REGISTER.*
Daniel pointed to the final entry.
"Look.""
I leaned closer.
The trust's controlling beneficiary wasn't Chad.
It wasn't Richard.
It wasn't Edward.
It was a woman named Margaret Morrison.
I looked at Whitmore.
"Who is she?""
He seemed to lose his balance.
"Margaret was Chad's grandmother.""
"And?""
Whitmore swallowed.
"She was also your grandfather's business partner.""
My mother frowned.
"That isn't possible. The Morrison family only invested in the company.""
"No," Whitmore said.
"They helped establish it. But Margaret and your grandfather had a daughter together.""
Silence.
I looked at the photograph of Isabella.
"Isabella?""
Whitmore nodded.
"Her mother was Margaret's daughter. Her father was your father's younger sister's husband. She was raised under a different name after her parents died.""
I stared at him.
"You're saying Isabella is connected to both families?""
"Yes.""
Daniel shook his head.
"That's why her name is on the agreement.""
My father looked toward the floor.
"Your grandfather knew.""
"Then why didn't you tell us?"" I demanded.
"Because he believed the truth would make her a target.""
I looked at the photograph again.
The man behind Isabella had a distinctive silver ring.
A ring I had seen before.
On Chad Morrison's hand.
I turned toward Detective Harris.
"Chad isn't in custody?""
The detective checked his phone.
His expression changed.
"He's not.""
"What?""
"He was transferred to another facility this afternoon. The transport never arrived.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
"Richard?""
"We don't know.""
I looked at the photograph again.
The man holding Isabella wasn't Chad.
It was Richard Coleman.
The former CFO had been operating behind every betrayal, every forged document, every staged disappearance.
And now he had Isabella.
We returned to the city under police escort.
My father insisted on coming.
Daniel came too.
Whitmore stayed with Detective Harris to provide a full statement.
Before we left, my mother caught my hand.
"There's something else.""
I turned.
She pressed a small envelope into my palm.
"Your grandfather gave this to me before he died. He said to open it only if Isabella's name appeared in the agreement.""
Inside was a photograph.
A little girl stood between two adults.
One was my grandfather.
The other was a woman I recognized from old family portraits.
On the back, my grandfather had written:
To the child who must never pay for the sins of the adults.
Beneath that was a second sentence.
If the family divides itself, she must be the one to decide what survives.
I looked at my mother.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I promised him.""
I folded the photograph carefully.
Then my phone vibrated.
A location had been sent.
The old ballroom.
The same hotel.
The same room where Brooke had humiliated me in front of hundreds of people.
Richard wanted to bring everything full circle.
The ballroom was almost empty when we arrived.
The chandeliers were still lit.
The polished floor reflected the light.
At the far end of the room, Isabella stood beside the stage.
Her hands were tied.
Richard held a gun.
Chad stood nearby, his face bruised and his shirt collar open.
I stepped forward.
"Let her go.""
Richard smiled.
"Mr. Vance. You always did know how to make an entrance.""
I looked at Isabella.
"Are you hurt?""
She shook her head.
"Not yet.""
Richard raised the gun slightly.
"Put the agreement on the table.""
I held it up.
"First, tell me why.""
He laughed.
"Because your grandfather built a company on a lie. Your father inherited it. You inherited it. And everyone else was expected to be grateful.""
"That's your excuse?""
"Excuse?"" Richard's expression sharpened.
"I spent twenty years keeping that company alive while your family played royalty.""
Chad stepped forward.
"Just give him the papers, Ethan.""
I looked at him.
"You're still doing this?""
Chad's face hardened.
"You think you're better than us?""
"No. I think I trusted you.""
For a moment, Chad looked away.
Richard interrupted.
"Enough. The agreement.""
I placed the document on the table.
Richard gestured toward it.
"Open it.""
I did.
He approached, keeping the gun pointed at Isabella.
Then he reached for the pages.
A voice came from the entrance.
"Richard, don't.""
Everyone turned.
Brooke stood in the doorway.
She looked exhausted.
Her hair was disheveled, and her hands were shaking.
I hadn't expected to see her again.
Richard's expression changed.
"You shouldn't be here.""
Brooke looked at Isabella.
"Let her go.""
Chad stepped toward her.
"Brooke, get out.""
She ignored him.
Then she looked at me.
"Ethan, I know what you're thinking.""
"Don't.""
"I can help.""
"You've helped enough.""
Her eyes filled.
"I know.""
She slowly raised her phone.
"I recorded everything.""
Richard's smile vanished.
"What?""
Brooke pressed the screen.
A recording began playing through the ballroom speakers.
Richard's voice filled the room.
"Once the accident happens, the shares are ours.""
Then Chad's voice.
"And if Ethan survives?""
Richard answered:
"He won't be able to prove anything.""
The recording continued.
A second voice entered.
Edward's.
"Make sure the girl is gone before the transfer. The firstborn cannot be allowed to sign anything.""
I stared at Brooke.
She looked at the floor.
"I kept it because I was afraid.""
Richard lunged toward her.
Detective Harris and his officers rushed from the side entrance.
"Police! Drop the weapon!""
Richard grabbed Isabella and pulled her against him.
Chad backed away.
Brooke screamed.
I moved instinctively.
But before I could reach them, Isabella drove her heel into Richard's foot and twisted free.
The gun fell.
An officer tackled Richard to the floor.
Chad tried to escape through the side doors.
Two officers stopped him.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Isabella ran toward me.
I caught her before she stumbled.
She looked at me, breathing hard.
"Are you all right?""
She nodded.
Then she looked at the agreement on the table.
"Is that the original?""
I nodded.
She took a breath.
"Then I think it's time everyone heard the truth.""
She turned toward the ballroom microphone.
And when she spoke, the room fell silent.
"My name is Isabella Marsh. And I am not here to take your company.""
May you like
She looked directly at my father.
"I'm here to tell you what your family did to mine.""
